Class 6A and 5A schools were allowed to schedule a 10-game regular season?   They could push their conference schedules back a week and add an out-of-conference game to the schedule.   With the easing of the travel restrictions, some could possibly look at adding an OOS game.   Some folks suggest that the week off is needed for players to rest and recuperate, but if so, why do we allow Carmel, Ben Davis, and other large schools with many players a chance to "catch their breath" but do not allow the same rest period of smaller schools with less players?    If that's the issue, start the season a week earlier and give each team a scheduled week off.    A lot of states do this, Georgia even requires two weeks off in the regular season.   Just thinking...

I know coaches who would love to have a 10th game, but you're asking this of the same folks who allow Ben Davis to host Brownsburg in week one of the 6A tournament. That's a different kettle of fish, though.

As good of a quarterback as Bryson Luter is, I think freshman Terry Walker III is even better. Over the summer, he competed in a national competition for freshman quarterbacks and finished in the top 4.  Next summer I expect him to start receiving power 5 offers as he visits different camps and colleges.

He's got a heck of an arm. He'll get that accuracy dialed in and will become a real problem for the next few years.

I guess I heard the starting QB for LC didn't play and they were still up 28-0 to start?

That's correct. BD gambled for an INT on one play to Duff and missed. Duff returned punt to the BD 9, and the Giants failed to cover a sky kick correctly which led to a Russell return. That's 21 points. BD's defense gave up 107 yards passing and 124 yards (on 40 carries) rushing including the 58 yarder that Duff caught and ran in after the gamble.

  4. Ben Davis 49, North Central 7

Giants get back on track with hopefully a full and healthy offense.

    Center Grove 35, Cathedral 28

Trojans just win. I think they'll do it again.

Carmel 28, Lawrence Central 7 (w/o Luter), Carmel 28, Lawrence Central 27 (with Luter)

LC had Ben Davis. They were gutted at the end. Completely gutted. Don't know why Luter didn't play against BD. If they don't play him, no way that they beat that Carmel D. If they have him, should be a really good one.

    Christian Brothers 38, Warren 21

CB looks scary if you go to their Max Preps. I'll take them to beat WC on the long road trip.

The MIC contract is up this year. Next season is when the scheduling woes start. BD and LN are the only MIC teams signed up after this year, and LN will fall off the following season.

Coach Simmons is on record that as long as he's head coach he'll continue wanting to play Center Grove and Carmel. He still considers them part of the MIC. He's been vocal.

Who is the MIC replacing them with?

I don't see the MIC expanding until something happens with one of the other major conferences. I think they stick at six.

Look at what Cathedral had to do this year. They are all over the state AND had to play a team from Cinci. I think they even had a bye this year because they couldn't find a game for week 5.

Cathedral has always played all over the state and out of state. Heck, they even went to Tennessee a couple of years ago. Not a new schedule.

  7. Let me start with the last game first...

Carmel is good, but they are not great. The Greyhounds gave up a ton of yards to the Giants, but BD couldn't get out of its own way with penalties and the continued inability to stop big plays. I don't think they are THAT much better than Warren. I think it's a two TD affair. Carmel 35-21 over Warren.

Center Grove should beat Lawrence North, but I think that the Wildcats have discovered something. I think they hang close and maybe CG hits a couple of TD's in the 4th to pull away. Center Grove 42, LN 28

Pike should have won a couple of games this year, but they couldn't close the door on opponents. I think that they are the better of the "o-fers" in the conference. I think Mike Brevard celebrates his first win. Pike 35, NC 14

    Finally,

Ben Davis should win this game. I think, as you said @temptationthat the Giants have more playmakers. I think the Giants want that 12th MIC title a lot. I think they're disappointed in what happened in their three close losses and want to close out an undefeated MIC slate, albeit without Carmel and CG to Coach Simmons' chagrin, for the first time since 2017. All of that said, I don't think there's any way this isn't a one possession football game in the end. Maybe the team that has the ball last will win it. Will Patterson for Coach of the Year and for showing what you can do with a program like LC's. Makes you wonder how NC keeps missing the boat. Ben Davis 31, Lawrence Central 28

When did carpet come into the mix with concrete?  Most Catholic school kids probably recall that there really wasn't a true "playground" for recess in elementary school.  After the cars dropped off kids in the morning, the parking lot became the playground.  To make matters worse at our school, the school uniform required hard-soled shoes unless your class was on "gym day" ... then you were allowed to wear tennis shoes.  You learned very quickly how to make cuts on concrete and oil slicks when you were playing and how to control your body to keep from ending up on that concrete surface.  And God forbid it had rained before recess.  Acrobatic catches are all the rage on ESPN, but try making those on concrete.

My comment was tongue in cheek since essentially that's what you had with the old RCA dome turf and many of the "Astroturf" fields prior to Fieldturf.

  9. I think you're pretty spot on in the Ben Davis/Carmel game. History would favor the Giants because this series is tied again for the 8th time since 1996 and Carmel has not led the series since 1995. The Giants always seem to win the "series tied" matchups.

The only game I see different is the Warren/LN game. Lawrence North's a good football team. Not sure why they didn't put it together exactly. They really fought back twice from a couple of BD haymakers. I think that game with Warren is a one score affair. Warren wins though, 28-24

  10. I, for one, am glad the Giants and the Greyhounds appear to be playing into the future. This series (first played in 1958 and now every year since 1981) existed before the MIC, so it's good to see that it exists post-MIC for Carmel. The series is tied up at 24. The series has been tied 8 times dating back to 1996/97, but Carmel hasn't led the series since 1995. This is usually quite a good one.

Looks like LN is going to play CG one more year because they have to but they will also tuck tail after that.  Really surprised by that one.  I hope it was against Coach Mallory's wishes because that doesn't sound like his style.

Especially since he was a former assistant there at CG.

Honest question:  Can you fix a problem to which you are accused of contributing to?

He said, coaching and administration and did not speak in the past tense...

It wasn't always puppy dogs and rainbows on the Westside. I don't know the details of what's going on at Warren, but I do know that Mike is reflective enough to do that, yes. I will admit, full disclosure, that I'm a little biased though because I consider Coach Kirschner not only a friend...but a good friend. My biggest compliment to Mike is that his kids still all love to be around him. He's a great father, and I've seen the difference he makes in young people's lives. If it's fixable, he'll fix it.

I don't know. Last year and this year seems to be the same old same old. As a matter of fact it has been the same old same old since 2019. Last year the 2022 senior class was blamed. This year, according to an interview K was quoted as having no idea what was going on, but did say it is on him as the HC. Look, I was really excited when it was announced that he was going to be the coach last year. I really was hoping he would be the guy to turn it around. But behind the scenes it was nothing but chaos. It seems to be more of the same this year. I get he has an impressive resume, but he is struggling at WC. I know he cares, but something isn't translating here. He has an amazing group of kids talent-wise, parent-wise, and dedication-wise.

This 2023 class was suppose to be the start of something awesome for WC. But it isn't like they are losing games while looking good doing it. They are literally imploding each game, minus the Detroit King. Mistakes killed them against CG, BD, NC, and LC. Lack of offensive ball movement has been the hallmark of the WC offense since 2019. The defense, who is usually stellar, had several uncharacteristic blown coverages against BD. And the defense is on the field too much and too long which can make any great defense struggle. Especially when they have to turn right back around because of a turnover. Also the personnel choices are baffling. They were baffling last year too. The mistakes are the type of mistakes that I put largely on the coaching staff not getting the boys straightened out during the week of practice to play sound, mistake free football. Again something isn't translating.

BUT it can be turned around for sure. How or what to do to turn it around? That is the question. Hopefully those 18 years of working with Mike Kirschner will start to kick in because this 2023 class deserves the best possible opportunity to get to state. They have been through a lot over the years and have worked too hard for this. I pray that I will be able to watch WC against Carmel at LOS this year. It can still happen, but the road is a steep uphill battle right now.

Mike has a philosophy in interviews. When the team wins, it's credit to the team. When the team loses, it's always on the coaches. "________________________________, and that's on me."

The blank would be whatever went wrong.

At the risk of sounding like I am gossiping I will say I have a very personal familiarity with the program for the last 6 years. There is a lot going on there. Much of it is out of the control of the kids and it falls on the adults; administration and coaching staff. This is both in the school and on the field. Until the adults not only take responsibility, which I believe they have (I hope), there needs to be serious changes to follow up the admission of responsibility.

Having worked with Mike Kirschner for 18 years at Ben Davis, I know you have the right person.

Warren Central has also taken a swan dive off a cliff. It completely blows my mind how far the Warriors have fallen since winning state 4 years ago

In 2019, Ben Davis beat North Central to create a three-way tie for a MIC Championship. They went 4-3 in 2020 and then have won one MIC game since. That's a swan dive.

I think Warren is more a speed bump.
