I don't think he was taking a jab at the Giants, just making a point. Comparing Merrillville to Ben Davis isn't fair since the Giants are double the Pirates in enrollment. Give Merrillville 3000+ kids and they probably have multiple championships to their credit. Maybe not nine, but more than likely multiple.

And if I had hair and 100 less pounds, I could be a male model, but I'm not.

  2. Ben Davis looked pretty good on defense, and that's encouraging. I'm sure the offense will have some more growing pains as Gotkowski presumably steps in at QB. I thought the Giants and the Orioles both showed good resilience last week by getting down and then mounting charges. I would assume that there will be a big crowd out there to watch this one. Give me BD by 7...Giants 35-28.

It seems like the Trojans are probably going to get beat sometime this year, but I don't think it will be this week. I would assume, much like Temptation, that this will be a low-scoring slobberknocker of a game. Last one standing is CG by a field goal. 13-10.

Kudos to Warren for scheduling this one. Always love it when Indiana High School Football can show itself to an out-of-state opponent. I know Warren was disappointed in its offensive output last week. Seems like they have that stout D under Coach Tutsie. We'll see if Jimmy Graves side of the ball can respond. Give me Warren 24-21.

I wasn't necessarily shocked by the outcome of the New Pal vs. Westfield game, but I was shocked by the margin. Coach Gilbert will get his team ready. Big opportunity here for LC and Coach Patterson's crew to get a big win. I don't know if they're ready just yet to take that step. Westfield recovers 28-14.

Lawrence North shot like a racehorse out of the gate and then held on to beat Avon. I have no reason to believe they won't find a way to get by Whiteland. 28-17

I saw @temptationsay the heat was on Kevin O'Shea. While I think it's much too early to put the heat on a guy who just a couple of years ago brought the Panthers their first-ever MIC Championship in football, I would agree that the program's decline has to be concerning. The Panthers were quite lackluster against Fishers, and that was a shock...again...not that Fishers is good but how bad NC must have looked. HSE by 3 TDs. 28-7

Proud of Coach Brevard to get his team into OT with Zionsville. That win would have been huge in his first game at Pike. As it stands, he gets another opportunity against a quality Fishers team that really got hot out of the gate. Fishers by 10, but don't count out the Red Devils. 24-14

So I guess Ben Davis doesn't belong in 6A either , because they have also whiffed the last 3 years  on the big stage in the tourney 110-29. To answer the OP question , yes in most years the Pirates would be in the upper half of 6A teams .

When Merrillville wins 9 State Championships, come talk to Ben Davis about whiffing.

My only complaint would then be to stop having so many technical difficulties.   I watched several last year and one last night because I couldn't make it to the game and there were continuous issues, especially in the 2nd half of the New Pal-Westfield game.  I have no problems paying but I'd like to be able to watch relatively issue free.

Again, IHSAATV is only the delivering platform. The individual broadcasters are responsible for the content.

  5. Best crowd I've seen at Ben Davis in probably 20 years. Harkened back to the old Penn/Ben Davis crowds. Really impressed with the home side. School officials have done a ton of work trying to build school spirit and making it a "Thing" to be at the sporting events.

Also proud of the Giants. They didn't win, but they grew up a lot tonight. I have several of the key players in my classes, so I'm really proud of those kids. Congrats to Brownsburg.

I've got some down time since CG's webcast stopped working so I thought I'd check out some other games but it wants me to pay $10 for each game I watch?  Is there no option to pay a fee then watch as many as you want?

I don't think so. It's a platform for various broadcasts to be delivered in one spot, so you're at the mercy of whatever the school/broadcaster is charging.

Here we go as the games count beginning this Friday!  Some real tossups on the schedule as I see a handful of coin flip contests that could really shape teams' seasons.  Excited for many of these matchups.

Center Grove @ Warren Central:  Plenty of juicy storylines here so I won't beat too many dead horses, but CG's quest for a three peat begins on the east side with a younger, new look outfit.  I see this one being a classic that comes down to a turnover here or there late in the fourth quarter and I honestly think this is my "upset" of the week.  The Trojan squad that left the field Thanksgiving weekend last fall has moved on and while I think they will be rolling and ready as the season progresses, I think it would be foolish to not expect some growing pains.  I am taking Warren 23-21 at the expense of looking silly Saturday morning.

Brownsburg @ Ben Davis:  This is another one that I think could go either way between two consensus top 10 teams in 6A.  I've long spoken of a "changing of the guard" on the west side but have also been adamant that I need to see more from Brownsburg in the tournament before I write it down in pen instead of pencil.  I am taking the easy way out here and picking BD because they are at home; 30-24.

Zionsville @ Pike:  Another regional/geographical battle for two areas that share the same backyard.  Zionsville has some graduation losses to overcome, and like CG I think its foolish to expect a well-oiled machine in week 1.  Pike's record will not reflect its improvement in 2022 unfortunately.  This is another close one but gimme Zionsville 23-14.

Louisville Trinity (KY) @ Carmel:  These two have played some classics recently and I will fully admit that I do not know much about the 2022 Trinity outfit other than they do not have anyone listed in the 2023 class on 247.  That leads be to believe the long bus ride combined with the talent deficit makes me tend to lean towards Carmel.  I will take the 'Hounds 34-21.

Avon @ Lawrence North:  Two programs that seem to be trending in opposite directions as Avon was at the bottom of the HCC last fall and LN is trending closer to the MIC's top two.  LN lost some obvious next level talent to graduation and I have heard great things about the Avon QB.  That being said, I think the Wildcats have a level of confidence never before seen on the northeast side.  LN wins 31-20.

Hamilton Southeastern @ Lawrence Central:  This may be the most underrated game on the schedule Friday night as both teams feel like a breakthrough year is coming.  HSE bounced back from a subpar 2020 last year and LC got a huge program win against Warren in the sectional and boasts the most talent player in the state.  A win here would go a long way for LC in terms of building momentum towards a memorable season.  I say the home team gets it done.  LC wins 20-17.

Fishers @ North Central:  Not to sound like a broken record but similar circumstances surround this game as both teams boast legit reasons for optimism entering this season.  I could also see this one going either way.  I'll say NC pulls it out 27-21.

My level of confidence in a weekly slate of picks has never been lower.  I could honestly see myself waking up on Saturday morning 0-7 on these picks.  A great week 1 slate.

    What say you?

    I like your picks.

How many school charge the visiting team to do the webcast or radio of the game?

Depends largely on what you're doing. We've never been charged as a high school radio station. I know of schools that charge for video webcasts/TV unless there is some relationship with the school...ie...ISC and the MIC or WHMB TV 40, etc.

It does not make financial or common sense to offer sports that have extremely low participation rates, or sports that your kids do not have a fair chance to compete on a level playing field.  I think at BD in particular, they take great pride in the fact that they offer such a huge and comprehensive selection of activities for their students.

BD kids, and for that matter most at Pike, WC and The Larrys , dont have the benefit of high cost personalized one on one training that kids in Carmel and Center Grove routinely get.  Those kids who may not get to swim or play golf and tennis (bowling must be a club sport - we wont touch that) can find other sporting or non sporting activities that catch their interest.

You're telling a golfer to play basketball or football or run track? Our golf team showed tremendous growth this past season. When you see the medalist of a tournament wearing his medal around school on Monday following the weekend, you tell him, "Sorry, you're going to have to play another sport."

I will personally recognize those Bowling state titles when the IHSAA approves state competition for cornhole, lawn jarts and horseshoes.  Lets add one more, badminton, and call it a Hoosier Prep Pentathalon, naturally hosted at Giants Stadium on the Ben Davis High School Campus.  Outdoor bowling would be very cool.  Do you think all 6 schools could field teams to fully participate?  Snooty NC would probably pass at the idea of silly cornhole.

Where did I say that the IHSAA recognizes bowling as a sport? There are no plaques on the gym wall here. The trophies are in a trophy case but not with the IHSAA sports. I don't know why you have to be such a jerk. I never said that the state titles were IHSAA recognized. You're the one who said that these were MIC sports. I didn't.

I doubt any of the current 3 head coaches will still be in their posts in 3 years.  New people with new ideas and new attitudes are coming in.  Old school football people, in both athletics and administration, are disappearing quickly.  It was new gen admins who voted CA and CG out of The MIC.

Boy, a lot to process here. I do think Coach Moore's health will be the determining factor, but barring some major collapse, I don't see Simmons or Hebert as in trouble. The "new gen" admins...what a joke. John Clark had been at Ben Davis for 49 years when he retired in June and had been assistant AD or AD for appoximately 20. The BD principal has been here longer than me as a teacher and admin.

What happened was that Center Grove and Carmel made it clear that they had applied for membership in the HCC in December. This was after several denials. Then, they got voted out. They were on the way out. The rest of the MIC said, here's the door. This idea that some "new gen" admins were at work here is silly. They left the MIC because they wanted to leave the MIC for other opportunities, but, as it turned out, the HCC said no.

BD is not the big scheduling draw it used to be.  Nobody from out of state is breaking down the walls to play BD.  Penn walked away years ago.  I doubt any of the current 3 head coaches will still be in their posts in 3 years.  New people with new ideas and new attitudes are coming in.  Old school football people, in both athletics and administration, are disappearing quickly.  It was new gen admins who voted CA and CG out of The MIC.

Penn did not walk away. They dropped Ben Davis because they had to pick up Mishawaka. They wanted to come back after a couple of years, but BD opted to go with a long term deal with Pike to play week 2. Of course, a couple of years later Pike joined the MIC. BD then signed Avon. Penn wanted to continue to play BD, but the Giants wanted schedule stability.
