Ig i was born in the sweet spot and had the honor of watching a few of these teams. If people watched film on these teams it may change their mind..the 91 BD team was amazing..the 06 Warren team was immaculate. It kind of ruins a person's perspective after you see greatness..possibly in the next few years we will have analytics to assist with the greatest team of all time discussion (someone create the poll) that will list how many linebackers ran sub 4.5 who were listed at 215 or wrs that were 6'1 that clocked 4.3 40's..athletes are supposed to always get bigger, faster, and stronger yet I fail to believe that those teams from the 80s and 70s weren't just as tough.

There was some old school nasty on the BD '91 squad.  They were as tough as they were good. They'd pound you. Closest game was at state vs. Penn and I think, if memory serves, they were up 35-0 before Penn scored a couple. It's been 30 years so I may be foggy.

When FC hired WC's basketball coach, I heard that some WC talent followed him.  I also had heard that this started happening on the football team prior to the new coaching hire.  Wonder if this will happen to a larger degree with the coaching change??

It's possible. Those guys that liked Coach West may move to follow him. I'd think those considering a "move" might want to hedge their bets since Kirsch was the hire to replace West.

A lot of noise coming from south east indy this off season. I think Franklin Central football is back on the map. They are going to ruin a lot of teams seasons this year. I'm gonna say that they will be, by far, the most improved team in the state. Look out 6A!

As a former Franklin Central teacher, I'd love to see it. Franklin Central is supported by a special community, but, unless Center Grove is hit by a ton of injuries, there's no way they are getting out of Sectional anytime soon. Yeah, Coach West is a great football coach and has proved that at both his HC stops, but this is a heavier rebuild, IMO. Wish him well though.

No disrespect intended for Center Grove, but I feel like teams knew the game was going to be a no contest when they lined up across from 2006 Warren/2017 BD (I’m also too young to have seen 1991 BD in person).

CG let teams (LN/Cathedral) hang around last season.  The 2006 Warren/2017 BD squads were coasting after halftime.

The schedule strength argument is a good one though.  CG definitely has the advantage there for the reasons mentioned.

'17 BD was supremely talented offensively. Reese Taylor was a human highlight film with an offense full of weapons. '06 Warren was good on both sides of the football. '91 BD was in that vein. They had a great mobile QB named Chris Ings and a phenomenal running back named Steve Holman. Steve was big and tough. The defense was also fantastic, and they had maybe the best kicker BD's ever had as well in Trinity Hines.

Hard to argue that, but that CG defense is no joke either. Never gave up more than 14 points and did it playing arguably a harder schedule than the 06 Warren team. I think that CG team belongs in the conversation.

I believe that Warren team had multiple 300 pounders up front. They wasted BD (ranked #2) 76-7 that year. Granted, BD may have been overrated to start the year, but they beat us up so bad in that game, BD had to start its fourth-string QB vs. TH North the next week.

Say what you want about last years CG team but I think they belong in that conversation. Can't really comment on the 91 BD teams as I was in diapers then, but the 2020 CG team is up there with the 06 Warren team.

    2020 CG team

    Average win 40-7

    5 shutouts

Never gave up more than 14 points

    2006 Warren

    Average win 48-8

    5 shutouts

That Warren team definitely had more D1 talent but would argue Center Grove played a much tougher schedule. MIC in 06 still had the Terre Haute teams and North Central wasn't what they were today. It's debatable because that Warren Central team was incredible but that CG team was as well.

That 06 Warren team was the most physically dominant team I've ever seen.

It depends on what we are considering the “Center Grove teams of today” in my opinion.

Are we accepting that sendIng over a half dozen guys to D1 schools is the new norm at Center Grove?  Or is that an anomaly?

Those BD teams in the 90s and Warren teams in the 2000s were loaded just like CG is now but they also had years in which they were not “as rich” with D1 talent.

The 2020-21 Trojans could play with anybody but I still think that most of CG’s teams still pale in comparison to the BD/Warren teams mentioned above.

    Just my opinion.

My gold standards are '06 Warren Central and '91 Ben Davis. Those two teams were exceptional. I don't know if we've seen the likes of them since or will see them again.

I wouldn't say they are in purgatory with regard to the north, just the Central Indiana behemoths. With an enrollment of 2100 and a pretty good coach, there is no reason they shouldn't be a major player north of Indy. A 6A championship may not be very realistic, but they could potentially become one of the better 'pound for pound' teams in the state.

I heard an urban legend that Penn at one point was contacted by Ben Davis and a handful of others about forming a conference like the MIC before the MIC. I don't know if it's true or not, but I've heard it.

Now THAT is a fact.  Pike or Carmel would have to basically drive through Wayne Township to play a sectional road game at Avon or Brownsburg while BD's bus passes them going the other direction to travel to any road venue in their sectional.

Pike/BD/Avon/Brownsburg should be the Sectional. Huge gates. It never should have changed, but Carmel had to go south and somewhere. Personally, I think they fit more with LN/LC/NC, but that leaves Warren without a spot. I mean, it could be Warren, Tech, Perry, and Southport...The whole IHSAA policy of keeping schools in the same district in the same Sectional locks in a few scenarios.

Three team sectionals?  What a joke.

Nothing like getting a bye to the sectional championship.

Agree. Tremendous advantage for Center Grove to not have to play an extra game potentially while Warren has three other MIC teams to contend with in their Sectional.

Same deal for the benefactor of this up in Sectional 3. Waltz to the Sectional title game while the other two duke it out on the other side.

Hello everyone! I've been thinking about creating an Indiana High School Football records book/encyclopedia.

I would include info from my previous books (all-state players, tournament history, etc.) but would want to include other features, as well.

    • conference standings
    • coaching records
    • state records for players
    • list of state champs (including mythical back to 1800s)
    • articles on legendary coaches and teams

What else would you want to see included?

    Thanks,
