As you know, I was referring to your penchant for using football subjects as a way to push your personal political agenda. Out of respect for the people who are incredibly weary of the political back and forth, let’s keep it to football here, and save the political stuff for the OOB.
  2. When I attended St. Edward in the late 1960s, it had 1,760 boys. The testosterone fog drifting through those hallways was so thick, you could cut it with a knife.
  3. I have to say I was disappointed by the Merrillville game. I enjoyed seeing Westfield. That’s a very good, very well-coached team. But Merrillville turned it over 3 times, and they had at least 7 pre-snap penalties, including at least 5 false starts. There was a very small crowd, due to distancing restrictions, so it certainly wasn’t crowd noise that caused those false starts. Just a lack of concentration at a critical time. I saw the Pirates 3 times this year, and it was the same story each time. You cannot help but be impressed with their size, speed and athleticism. The first two times I saw them, they made these same mistakes, but the talent differential between them and the opponent was so great that they could overcome them. Not so when you play a disciplined, well-coached opponent who doesn’t make mistakes, and takes advantage of yours. I didn’t know Coach Seiss before he came to Merrillville, but having seen him work now on multiple occasions, I have to say I’m impressed with him. But if Merrillville truly aspires to have downstate success, rather than just being the big fish in the relatively small pond that is 6A football in the North, he’s got to change these guys from athletes to football players. It’s great to have sensational athletes on your team. But they have to get better at playing football.
  4. I agree, it’s not a foul. And this is a very good (Region) crew. It’s the crew I spent my last season on the field with. They have the 6A game Friday. From my standpoint, this is a very interesting play for training purposes. The question is “what could the crew have done differently to have a better chance of getting this unusual play right?” That discussion could last quite a while.

We’ve been through this before ... and it didn’t end well. Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it.
  6. You do need it. You just don’t realize it. And if I want to be offended — and express it — by the ridiculous implication in your post, I will.
  7. The guy made a bad call. Nothing more than that. You’re being ridiculous.
  8. Got to know Bob Nagle and Chuck Freeby a little bit, having done so many games in the South Bend area over the years. They had the final game of my career, and afterward I got a nice note from them and a DVD of the game. Great people.

    IU 2020

I know. The hurt is real. Been there.
  10. I believe that’s right. And if you look at the game times, the days start earlier, and there is a longer intermission between games.

    IU 2020

5 min. left IU @ Ohio State, and the TV announcers are talking about how many timeouts IU has left! When in history has THAT ever happened? And @Coach Nowlinhas got to be dying after the long TD pass with the no-call on OPI.
  12. You’re exactly right. And when people criticize the IHSAA for the lineup — as some inevitably will — keep in mind that this is the first try at this ... in the middle of a pandemic. Cut people some slack. This was a very good idea. Let’s see how it works.
  13. Campaign funding drives a lot of what’s wrong with the system, i.e., special interests, compromises on legislation, politicians whose primary goal is to get re-elected ... over and over again. The problem is SCOTUS has ruled repeatedly that restrictions on campaign funding violate the First Amendment. That makes reform very difficult. And if a candidate runs on the platform that he’s going to try to curb PACs, Super-PACs, etc., he or she doesn’t get enough funding to get elected.
  14. I don’t think so. 1 step. Play it at game speed, not slo-mo. Don’t be greedy. 😂
  15. Somebody is going to have a bad day at video review.
  16. I, too, was quite impressed with Westfield. Their QB was the best player on the field last night. And I could see during the warmup period that they were incredibly loose and unintimidated. That speaks to excellent coaching. Their passing attack is fairly sophisticated. I look for them to have some success in the passing game if they can protect.
  17. Again this election, I find myself in agreement with you. I have concluded that the 2 party system, as presently constructed, actually works to select out worthwhile candidates, leaving the electorate to repeatedly choose between the lesser of two evils. I don’t know the answer. But whatever it is, I’m confident that if it’s found, the entrenched resistance against its implementation will be more than formidable.
  18. The schedule is set now. The IHSAA game-planned the permutations in advance, so they knew as soon as the last game ended.
  19. Merrillville with a 30 yd. field goal. 20-16 Westfield 5:39 of the 3rd
