Andrean is hosting Adams Central in the northern 2A semistate. I was on Andrean’s field Friday night. It’s natural grass. That field is notorious for being in poor condition late in the season, but I was pleasantly surprised at the shape it was in Friday. But we have a couple of days of rain predicted, so all bets are off.

I refereed the 2003 semistate against Seeger. Talk about a finish!

Andrean beat a very game Southmont team in a game that had a little of everything. 1) A blocked punt that went beyond the neutral zone, muffed by a member of the kicking team and recovered by the kickers for a 1st down, even though short of the line to gain; 2) snap over the shotgun QB’s head, muffed repeatedly by members of both teams and recovered in the end zone by the defense for a TD; 3) long kickoff return TD to open the 2nd half; 4) a long pick 6. i was very impressed with the Southmont following. Their crowd was huge for a 2A school that traveled 100+ mi. to get here. Very enthusiastic. It would have been even better if they’d left home the half dozen or so jackwads who spent most their time profanely abusing the officials. FYI, I was there to observe and evaluate the officiating crew. And I can tell you they had a game that was worthy of the upper levels of the tournament.

The Southmont @ Andrean game might give some insight into the role played by schedule strength. According to Sagarin, Andrean’s schedule strength is ranked 81st, while Southmont’s is 241st. Andrean did not play a 2A school until the tournament. But I’m sure the bus ride is close to 3 hrs., and some would argue that’s a significant factor as well.

More and more this guy is growing into that which the NFL prizes above everything else: A “Franchise” quarterback, in every sense of the word.

Be nice to actually see this before ruling. But from the description: That’s not unsportsmanlike conduct. UNS at the high school level is a non-contact foul. If there’s contact, it can be a personal foul, but not UNS. If it were 2 blocks in the back during the same live ball, only one can be enforced. The block in the back is a “post-scrimmage kick” foul. Ball belongs to R. 10 yd. penalty enforced from the end of the kick, spot of the foul, or end of the return, whichever is more favorable for Team K. If this actually were a UNS foul, it would still be R’s ball. The 15 yd. penalty would be enforced from the succeeding spot, where it would be 1st & 10 for R.

Simply grabbing the jersey is not a foul. It has to be a specific area of the jersey, and the runner has to be pulled to the ground either backwards or sideways.

I will see them this Friday. Southmont coming a long way, changing time zones. Sagarin makes the Mounties almost a 20 pt. underdog.

Be nice for ND to meet up with them again in the playoffs. But, assuming the Irish get in, the real matchup I want to see is Texas Tech. Their coach has a big mouth for a guy from a conference that hasn’t been relevant in quite awhile.

One would think there’s more to this than on-field performance.

A little history. The horse collar foul came into being in the NFL in 2005. The impetus for the rule came in 2004 when Cowboys’ safety Roy Williams used the technique to tackle Terrell Owens, breaking his leg in the process. Williams was rather notorious for the move.

Let’s start with the rulebook definition. “No player shall … Grab the inside back or side collar, or the name plate area (directly below the back collar), of either the shoulder pads or the jersey of the runner and subsequently pull (backward or sideward) that opponent to the ground (Horse-collar), even if possession is lost. The horse-collar foul is enforced as a live-ball foul.”

It was a win-win.
