There used to be something like this in the Summer in South Bend. 4 teams from the area: South Bend City, East, West, and a team of Michigan kids. They would play two games in a day. I arranged for our crew to go over there to work one of those games one year. I figured this would be a piece of cake, low intensity, no pressure way to spend a day during the off season. Midway through the first quarter we find ourselves in a bench clearing melee when one kid spit on another. The rest of the game was brutal, one personal foul or unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after another. My crew never let me forget that.

I still don’t see Rogers playing for the Packers unless they make some sort of face-saving gesture that would allow Rogers to declare victory and go home - like fully guaranteeing the last two years of his contract … or even extending it. He seems to me to be a guy that would have a lot of trouble just walking back his statements.

I am looking forward to seeing the impact NIL has on recruiting. It may be that having opportunities in place for student athletes to monetize their college experience to the greatest extent will confer a sizable recruiting advantage. This, in turn, could operate to break the stranglehold the big 3 have on 5 star talent, and distribute that talent more evenly. We shall see.

IMO, @DT has done more to pump life into the GID than the next 3 posters anyone can name combined. The idea to obtain interviews from all these coaches was brilliant, worthy of TA. We all owe DT, whether you like the point of view he takes in other posts or not.

If the initial contact is at or above the waist, it’s no problem.

With about 150 crews in the state, of varying abilities, there is inevitably going to be some degree of inconsistency. We are working hard in the preseason to educate our officials, using, among other things, the rule of thumb I described above.

In my opinion, that is a foul. The guideline is if the player being contacted is not head up or in the blocker’s gap, the contact cannot be “immediate.” The defensive player here was a full man over from the blocker.

Notre Dame cannot catch Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State in the recruiting derby. It’s simply not possible. Those schools recruit from a far larger pool of potential athletes than Notre Dame does. In any given year, if you look at the ESPN 100, ND cannot even talk to at least half of them. The best the Irish can hope for is to consistently be a player in the 12 team playoff, and every once in a while, if they can combine elite QB play with a relatively injury free season, get a shot at the big prize.

As with any rule, when interpreting it, start with the reason the rule was enacted. As part of its overall risk minimization strategy, the NF eliminated all low blocks except those that they deemed at low risk of injury. The reason for the FBZ initially, and this change requiring “immediate” contact, is that it was felt low blocks occurring before the parties could generate enough momentum to raise the incidence of leg injuries were an acceptable compromise that struck the right balance between offense and defense without causing serious injuries. Now, as the tolerance for risk gets even lower, and it has become clear that offenses don’t need the help, use of low blocks has been restricted further.

That is no different from an OL taking a pass block set, and then cutting. Foul.

There are those who believe that NIL will operate to help distribute the talent amongst a larger pool of schools than currently. Now, some recruits are not only asking “Where can I go to help me get to the NFL?” They are also asking, “Where can I go to help me maximally monetize my college years?” There’s probably some overlap, but the two sets of schools are not likely identical.

I think there is a real possibility that this NIL thing has holed them below the waterline, and the ship is sinking, albeit slowly.

First, we’re assuming the NCAA will survive that long. It’s far from a sure thing. Personally, I hope that they continue to allow unrestricted transfers. We’ve now completely removed the fiction of “amateurism“ from college football. If these players are not school employees (and no one wants to open that Pandora’s Box), then they are independent contractors who can work where they please. It’s the American way. Having said that, if they don’t go back to the old rule, they’re essentially admitting that the organization is about as useful as screen doors on a submarine.

This was always part of our pregame whenever we had a Lowell game. They would run that fullback ISO about 40 times, and the LB would try to cut the FB in the hole.

Keep in mind that the ability to transfer without sitting out was a response to COVID, and is only temporary.
