Absolutely true and as impressive as Carroll's breakthrough win over HSE was, CG manhandling Cathedral was eye opening and twice as impressive.

I've maintained since the summer months that I thought Cathedral was the most talented team in the state and I still believe that.  They were dominated by Center Grove this season for 6+ quarters.  That is saying something.

Cathedral was really fortunate to win the first meeting. Center Grove had a very uncharacteristic 6 minutes of relegation or else they're still undefeated against Indiana teams going into their third consecutive state final. I still think Center Grove, Cathedral, and Brownsburg were the three best 6A teams I've seen this year but Carroll has a chance to join that discussion with a win next week.

Do you really think IU can afford $30M to buy him out??

Maybe...I just don't think the recipe for a Power 5 QB is to go 2 for 7 passing in a game will lead to much success.  I hope he proves he can actually pass the football.  If not for special teams and for a found running game, they don't win that game yesterday against a mediocre team.

That found running game has everything to do with the QB. That fact that IU only threw 7 passes…..and won, rectifies that.

  3. Couple silver linings today.

    1. IU found its QB for the future. Williams as a true dual-threat QB masks a bad offensive line and adds another dimension to the offense. Not caught up in the throwing numbers like some. Truth be told IU didn’t need to throw the ball to win today and Williams has enough zip on his ball to where I believe he’ll be a threat starting next year after getting a full years worth of reps with the starters in the offseason.

    2. True freshman Jaylin Lucas likely just cemented his honors on the All-American team as a KR this afternoon. Leads all FBS in kickoff return average and now has taken two back to the house. Fellow true freshman Dasan McCullough should make the freshman All-American as well. Hope IU can keep those two around.

    3. Resiliency. Can tell they’re still fighting for Allen. A coach who has lost the locker room wouldn’t have a team come back from that half time deficit. Still been an extremely frustrating year as there have been 2-3 games that could have resulted in wins, but you’d have to think a win over Purdue would be a huge boost of confidence heading into the offseason. While a bowl game is always the ultimate goal, I’d have to say going 5-7 given the way last year played out is a step in the right direction.

I think @slice60 said it most eloquently back in April:

”Yes, I can explain it. The IHSAA crapped the bed.

Here is how Chatard has fared in the last 25 years (22 of 25 years in 3A, except where noted). Chatard has won the 3A state title in 13 of 22 tournaments over the past 25 years. If that doesn't scream MOVED UP DUE TO SUCCESS FACTOR, I do not know what does.

    97-State Champ

    98-State Champ

    99-Lost in Sect (Roncalli-State Champ)

00-Lost in Sect (Heritage Hills-State Champ)

    01-State Champ

    02-State Champ

    03-State Champ

    04-Reg Champ (Andrean-State Champ)

    05-Reg Champ (NorthWood-State Champ)

    06-State Champ

    07-State Champ

    08-Reg Champ (Bellmont-State Champ)

    09-Reg Champ (West Laf-State Champ)

    10-State Champ

    11-State Champ

    12-State Champ

13-moved up to 4A, won Sect (Andrean-3A State Champ)

14-moved up to 4A, lost in Sect (Tri West-3A State Champ)

    15-State Champ

16-Lost in Sect (FW Concordia-State Champ)

    17-Sect Champ (Ev Memorial-State Champ)

    18-Reg Champ (West Laf-State Champ)

    19-State Champ

    20-State Champ

21-moved up to 4A, lost in Sect (Gibson So-3A State Champ) "

I think there was a very real concern that Chatard might run into it's second string of three consecutive non-state champ seasons in eight years and the IHSAA wanted to nip it in the bud. The embarrassment that this kind of perceived downturn in a program as storied as Chatard might lead to the utter collapse of the team, the Chatard community, and, more broadly, the entire 3A class. How would the IHSAA move forward with only five classes of postseason football being viable, while 64 3A teams wander aimlessly from one gridiron to another for a month, sometimes three schools on the same field, occasionally a team stumbling into a different state's playoffs entirely. Something like this could ultimately be the downfall of Indiana football as well know it.

Meanwhile, I believe Dwenger and LCC both stayed up this season, if I'm not mistaken.

Gibson Southern loses to Owen Valley and this guy wants to cry about Chatard.

Eh, 10-14.  I haven’t been really high on Chatard all season.

Pretty ho-hum year for Chatard resulting in yet another trip to LOS. Cathedral and Roncalli were both on the cusp of potentially program defining seasons leaving ol Chatard in the shadows, Trojans get the last laugh. Still the best pound for pound program in the state in my opinion.

    Wow.

Got away from the Irish quick. Had two great drives to start the game and were absolutely gashing the Trojan D with the running game. Center Grove didn’t flinch.

Thought Cathedral abandoned the run game way too early, pass protection was horrific. Center Grove once again proves why they are the class of 6A, stage never seems to big for them.

I think I agree but it doesn’t have as much to do with “recruiting” as it once did.

Don’t wanna go down the rabbit hole and piss @Footballking16 off though so I’ll save it for the offseason.

They are a 4A enrollment school who hasn't played in their technical classification in over a decade and don't see it happening anytime soon. I don't really think anyone looks at Cathedral as a 4A school (in terms of football) as they haven't played in a 4A tournament in years.

True story. The only reason I cited Carroll, Cathedral, Penn, and Homestead is because Indy posters do it all the time. At the end of the day, I agree with Footballking. Well, not exactly, he said "absolute terrible." I wouldn't go that far. But I get his point.

I have very little doubt in my mind that Cathedral would name the score if they played Penn again. They were out a couple starters including two D1 kids and still won by 2 scores.

I've seen Cathedral and Carroll first hand . Carroll looked like the better team to me .

Ah the transitive property ehh? Cathedral beats Penn by 14 and Carroll beats Penn by 28 so therefore Carroll is better. Is that how it works?

What about the running clock Cathedral implemented on Lafayette Jeff earlier in the year? The same Lafayette Jeff team who beats Carroll if the coach isn't throwing the ball inside the 10 yard line with a minute left in the game down 1 point.

Just wondering if you seen Carroll play is all.

I watched the telecast replay against Jeff. Wasn’t impressed. Jeff wins that game if it weren’t for brutal coaching and terrible clock management.

I’ve seen HSE play. I know the caliber of opponents that HSE has played all year and throughout the tournament. It’s night and day better than what Carroll has seen and Carroll will not present a challenge that will overwhelm HSE. HSE should be able to do what they want, when they want offensively and their defense will present a tough challenge for Carroll.

But time will tell and that is ultimately why they play the game.

The travel didn't seem to bother Westfield up at Merrillville in 2020. 41-23 Rocks win. Then Homestead goes to Westfield and loses 41-9.  Last year Westfield travels to Carroll and wins going away 37-14. Also last year, it apparently did bother Merrillville in a 48-19 loss.

So this theory must only apply to northern schools traveling south 🙂

At the end of the day it's a Jimmy's and Joe's thing. I could see the home team having the slight advantage if both teams were on equal footing, but at the end of the day a 2 hour bus ride isn't going to negate a night and day talent disparity. I think HSE is 3+ scores better than Carroll and at the end of the day wouldn't matter if the game was played in Fort Wayne, Fishers, or on a different continent.

and it illustrates why I think you proposal has serious flaws.  Warsaw was 7-2 and wouldn't have qualified under your proposal.  They won their first game of the sectional and was respectable in their loss in the sectional final to Carroll.  They finished the season 8-3, playing 2 post season games, including a secional final.

We shall agree to disagree that eliminating teams like Warsaw makes Indiana high school football a better experience.

Warsaw went 7-2 and didn't beat a soul. They were pummeled by the two hardest toughest teams they played. Warsaw played the second easiest schedule of any 6A team in the state and didn't face a single 6A team the entire regular season. They made it to the sectional final by virtue of playing of playing another team who also wouldn't have qualified under my proposal. In a single elimination format, mathematically somebody had to win that game.

***IF*** Roncalli were to run the table here, where does this team stack up in the Parthenon of Rebel teams? And yes I said Rebel teams, no Royal football titles yet. Lysander you’re one of the more Indy Catholic league in the know than most, what about the Roncalli faithful, what say you?

The 03 and 04 teams were very good. Nowhere near as big as this years team and even more one dimensional if you can believe it, but they were as physical as they came. 4A top to bottom probably tougher back then, Roncalli wasn't playing Shortridge and Attucks in sectionals back then.
