No corporation administrator would talk to any reporter. The first thing an administrator would be told by a competent attorney is "do not make any public comments." It isn't rocket science. It has nothing to do with Doyle.

The key facts in this case are undisputed: (1) assistant coach texts 15 year student; (2) parents get restraining order; (3) player transfers and wanted to play football his senior season; (4) Indian Creek refused to release player; and (5) IHSAA and CRP inexplicably side with school and screw student. It doesn't matter if Neddenriep wrote the article or Doyle. The point of the article that that once again the IHSAA chooses school over student.

Feel like there’s an event between 3 and 4 that would likely make #5 make sense, or at least I would hope there is for the sake of the IHSAA, that isn’t conveyed in Doyle’s article.

I don't want to start debating journalism, but he did give Indian Creek a chance to respond (included the principal's email). He also quoted Paul Neidig in the story from the IHSAA's side.

Do you think it’s partially due to the fact the Indy Star has a columnist reporting the story and not somebody there to actually report all the facts? Do you really think Doyel cares what Indian Creek has to say? Was it really going to change his mind?

On this article, I think it's an awful look for Indian Creek, and, frankly for the IHSAA.

But to the point, that's exactly WHAT Doyel does. The story he has written will lead the reader to believe there is absolutely no other side to the story and anyone who isn't on board is an idiot.

I've read the article, if what Doyel is saying is 100% true, I would agree, this a terrible look for the IHSAA and Indian Creek. I don't know anything other than what Doyel has written and it would be unfair for me to judge otherwise. However, I've been around long enough to know that something this emotionally charged has two sides for Indian Creek and the IHSAA to come to the decision they did. And I'm not so sure Doyel is sharing it. And why would he?

There is, but opinion writing is not the same as news writing. He's very definitely a columnist.

Someone like Neddenriep occasionally expresses an opinion (mostly on social media) but most generally writes straight news or feature stuff (and does it very well).

I know the difference between a columnist and news writer. Most columnists, well the good ones at least, will write opinionated pieces that have been researched to a degree to which an educated opinion can be formed. Not saying this isn't true for this particular piece, but Doyel is notorious for writing hit pieces and making over-sensationalized comments for the simple sake of gaslighting and virtue-signaling, despite not knowing what the hell he's talking about.

He's paid as a columnist and not a journalist. He's paid to get reactions from people and to express his opinions. His facts, however, have to be sound. That's especially in a case like this one. Anything presented as fact has been vetted by someone above him, I'm sure. If it's not, that's a problem for him and for Gannett.

There's still a code of ethics in Journalism that need to be followed (or at least there used to be and now a reason why print media sucks) and I'm not so sure that's a concern of Doyel or Gannett (perhaps why they're tanking). There's a a lot of dumb people out there who believe everything they read (I've been guilty a time or two especially in my younger years) and guys like Doyel have made a great living off these types of people.

OK, so what's up with all these high school teams - some of them larger schools - playing games at a jr. high venue?  I don't live in Indiana anymore, and keep seeing this "at Arlington MS".

Do they have a kickin' new stadium that's better than the high schools?  Is there a push for neutral site regular season games (IIRC most of these are Indy-area teams)?  Are these high schools all having work done at their stadiums concurrently?

What gives?  As the guy in the Dirty Harry movie said, "I gots to know!"

Arlington was a high school up until a few years ago. Would hardly call Cathedral a "larger school" they just happen to play in the largest class. Seating has never been an issue (parking though on the other hand) for any game I've ever attended there. Stadium is adequate but there could be better concession arrangements. Surface is natural and not an issue...unless it rans for 72 straight hours prior to a game?

Edit: see this has already been explained.

Not necessarily disagreeing with you, I'm just not ready to dub Dabo as a bad coach coming off of an 11-2 season.

Don't think he's a "bad" coach either. But I think he's going to go from a perennial  11-12 win coach to an 8-9 win coach real quick. That was Tommy Bowden...and he got fired.

  8. 3 minutes ago, BTF said:

    Fair.

You disagree on Dabo? Dabo surrounded himself with the brightest minds in football and with the best talent. He put himself in an impossible position to fail. He no longer has either of those luxuries.

Look at Saban and Urban when they went to the NFL and actually had to coach and didn't enjoy the rags to riches luxury of talent they enjoyed over the rest of their competition while in college? They failed miserably.

  9. 14 minutes ago, BTF said:

Aren't most coaches at the mercy of how well their offensive and defensive coordinators perform?

I'd say for guys who are merely used car salesmen like Dabo who don't really know what they're doing that is the case. Dabo is a figurehead.

How long are they going to be able to keep getting guys if they lose to Duke?

I have no clue what their NIL collectives look like but they'll continue to get guys so long as the dough is there and/or they stop putting guys in the league. I think the latter in this case is much more prevalent. As Temp said, this is where losing Elliott and Venables is monumental. Those two were the backbone of the program.

Give Tedford credit. He is a qb whisperer. Found what Purdue could not defend and dug in the dagger. And Harrell looked like the young apprentice of offense in comparison being schooled by an old pro.

We'll see how long Walters sticks with Harrell. This is his 3rd OC gig in as many years and can tell you SC and WVU fans weren't sad to see him go. If Purdue's inability to get off the field Saturday was any indication of how the rest of this season is going to play out, Harrell better be sustaining drives and putting up the points. Always though Walters would have preferred a more ground and pound offense given the type of defense he likes to run.

Either Paul Finebaum has lost his mind or I have. He claims that the "Dabo dynasty is dead" after an embarrassing loss to Duke. Didn't Clemson go 11-2 last season with victories over four ranked opponents? I think Finebaum's comments are premature to say the least. I will admit that Dabo needs to change his views on the transfer portal if he want's to compete for championships again. I admire him for staying out of the transfer portal, but it's really an 'adapt or die' reality.............as unfortunate as that is.

Just goes to show you how high the bar has been raised and how hard it is to consistently win in college football. I wasn't impressed with Clemson at all last year and while I don't really follow ACC football, never would have guessed they won that many games until you said it. I do think this is the begging of the end for Dabo and Clemson. Still good enough to win 8-9 games a year but I doubt they really challenge for a national title in the coming years.

  13. @BobrefDid you happen to catch the Clemson/Duke game? If so was the targeting call applied correctly? Clemson had 4th and medium, QB scrambled and went into his slide before the first down marker essentially ruling him down and play over but was simultaneously contacted by the Duke player in the head and neck area. Duke player was ejected and assessed 15 yards but as a dead ball foul after change of possession rather than an automatic first down for Clemson effectively ending the game.

Seems like a terrible misapplication of the rule even if applied correctly.

Currently they are ranked 9th in Region 4. They haven't played any Ohio opponents yet. I think right now they may sit anywhere from 4th to 6th in Region 4. Region 4 isn't as strong as it use to be. Right now St. Edwards in Region 1 is head and shoulders above everyone.

I know they have a RB committed to Michigan and a few other D1 kids. Would have expected a much better fight against Ben Davis and even though East Central is a great football team this year (regardless of class) pretty shocking to see Moeller get beat up like that.

Trinity down in Louisville is another team who doesn't appear to be their normal selves this year. Outcome against Carmel will be very telling.

Cathedral led 35-0 at halftime, thus the running clock in the 2nd half, and it was scoreless.  The Irish won 35-0.

There's still some things to clean up for the Irish, but they had fewer penalties and caught the ball tonight.  Not much of a running game which is quite strange.  Most of the running plays, except for the QB keeps, were right up the middle.  If they had run outside guard it would have seemed like an end run.

Bishop Chatard is up next back at AMS.  The field was no factor tonight. Oh, and it's Cathedral's homecoming next week.  Tonight was senior night which had to be early when the Irish only playing a couple games at "home.'  I also want to thank Penn for coming down to play at AMS twice in the last four years, and I wish them well the rest of the season.

Penn scored a TD late on a punt return

I feel Brownsburg exerted their will in the 3rd qtr. Brownsburg too full advantage of opportunities in the 3rd. The Irish Offense went away from being balanced leaving their defense on the field and they were very gassed (2 play with INT, 3 and out, 3 and out until about 1 minute left in the 3rd). The 3rd qtr is an area they Irish need to improve on. They will improve as they get game experience.

As for Brownsburg I think they have some work to do in Secondary and on O-line. but they looked very solid.

Brownsburg was very impressive. Very good RB and B10 receiver and QB throws a nice ball. I think their defense needs a lot of work if they want to hang with the CG's and Ben Davis' of the world but they have some firepower.

  17. 41 minutes ago, BTF said:

Brownsburg might be the best team in the state. I have them deadlocked with Ben Davis and Center Grove. That being said, didn't Cathedral have them down 17-14 at one point? The Irish must be pretty good if that's the case. I think the Kingsmen are good also, but I see the difference in this one being two touchdowns. Cathedral 35, Penn 21.

Back and forth for the first quarter and a half. Some pretty poor game management and bad execution gave Brownsburg the lead at halftime and then they exerted their will on Cathedral in second half. I think depth is going to be a major concern for Cathedral the rest of this year and magnified even more playing in 6A.

I read somewhere that IMG had over 20 kids with D1 scholarship offers? How are they not #1? Are Mater Dei, Gorman, and Bosco football magnet schools like the IMG?

Yes football magnet schools but Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman are parochial schools (same as Chatard/Roncalli/Ritter/Scecina) and Bosco is a prep school with Catholic affiliation, similar to a Chatard or Brebeuf. But yes, those schools absolutely recruit from all over and all have several high D1 caliber players as well.

    Hartman looked good.

He’s a big upgrade from last year.

My biggest takeaway from that game is just how far Navy has fallen these last few seasons. Navy used to be a team you didn’t want to play and prepare for as a P5 opponent.

  20. 52 minutes ago, FastpacedO said:

Agreed on the one-dimensional offense. Not sure why the run was abandoned because the RB was doing okay, had like 5 carries in the first half and was getting 3 yards a pop. The 3rd quarter was brutal. The Irish defense which wasn't playing great but not terrible (in the first half aside from the secondary) could have used some help in the 3rd. Up until the last 1-2 min of the 3rd qtr the Irish offense went: series 1 2 plays (Interception on a bad decision of throwing the ball away from the back foot) Series 2 3 and out, series 3 3 and out. Defense was on the field for almost 10 minutes. Both teams have plenty to work on and get better (especially on the secondary).

Was a little perplexed on the end of the half game management. Cathedral up 17-14  with a little over 3 minutes left finally got a defensive stop and then had the quickest 3 and out deep in their own territory. Positive plays on 1st and 2nd and then they rush to the line on 3rd and 2 and throw a 40 yard go route. Didn’t understand that. Brownsburg went down and scored and never looked back.
