FORMER KOKOMO COACH TAKES NEW POSITION
The Kokomo Tribune has reported that former Kokomo High School Head Coach Austin Colby will take over the same position at Western High School, just down the road in the Greater Kokomo Area.
Colby spent 5 years with the Wildkats and made a run to the semistate a few years back. There is a lot of uncertainty relative to Kokomo's football future given the very weak state of the North Central Conference following the recent departures of 4 members (Indianapolis Tech, McCutcheon, WL Harrison, Logansport. If Kokomo wants to remain a contender in post season tournament play, it needs to upgrade its schedule and play tougher competition during the regular season.
Western had a very consistent run under former Head Coach Alex Stewart, who in his first year at East Noble has his Knights playing for a 4A North Semistate championship this week against Mishawaka. The Panthers fell completely off the map this season, posting an 0-10 record and getting outscored 313-53. Colby will have a big rebuilding job ahead as he aims to get WHS back on a winning track in the tough Hoosier Conference Big School Division, which in addition to Western includes Logansport, West Lafayette, Hamilton Heights and Twin Lakes.

I think you could argue that the Hoosier Conference is no more stable than the NCC.  Lewis Cass, Northwestern, and Rensselaer have all left or will soon leave, and it wasn’t that long ago that Delphi left the Hoosier.  It doesn’t really seem like much of a reason to leave a school, but there is often a combination of factors that lead to a move like this.

Congrats to Austin- this is a home run hire for Western.  Kokomo culture is going the wrong way quickly don't blame him for making this move and he has a lot of family ties to the Western community.

Explanation??

Agreed.  Maybe he sees the youth talent well drying up at Kokomo and decided to flee, like the elder Colby did at Frankfort.

And frankly I see the Western job as step down for the young Mr. Colby.  IMHO he would be a perfect hire for Noblesville.

Yes, I do.   High school football is not the NFL.   The prima donna suburbanites in Noblesville need to realize that.

Not a good thing for the Conference of Champions. I hope the new HC and staff can keep Kokomo rolling, because if the Kokomo program falls the NCC looks awful. There would be absolutely ZERO reason for Jeff to stick around.

There is one big reason for Jeff to stick around ... and its season starts next Wednesday.

The other is tradition. The NCC schools love to hang their hat on what the conference *was* 50 years ago, before suburbanization and the decline of the factories that kept places like Marion, Richmond, Muncie and Anderson going.

Let's be honest. The NCC is - and has been for a couple of decades - not a very good football conference (and, outside of boys basketball, it's a struggling conference in anything). You can usually scroll to the bottom of 4A in Sagarin (or, a few years ago, 5A) and find at least 2-3 NCC teams in the bottom 10. If Jeff wanted to leave the conference for football reasons, it would've done so already. It did once, but then came running back after it got the boot from the HCC.

Shh don't say that.

He'll flip out.

Still curious as to this statement?
