2025 Rule Change Question

Question

Posted

"In the same Rule 1-5-3c(3), another new item was added to the illegal equipment listing. Any audio (microphone) or video (camera) device worn by a player during the game is not permitted. No player participating in the game is allowed to wear any device that would record or transmit audio or video. "

Would this prevent a player on the sideline from putting on a headset to talk to a coach in the press box?  In my opinion he isn't "wearing" it "during" the game...but my opinion isn't the one that matters.

As I understand it, the prohibition applies only to players while participating in the game. Keep in mind, “player” is a defined term in the rules. Rule 2-32-1:

“A player is one of the 22 team members who is designated to start either half of the game or who subsequently replaces another player. A player continues to be a player until a substitute enters the field and indicates to the player that he is replaced, or when the substitute otherwise becomes a player.”

A kid in uniform on the sidelines is not a “player.”

The most important rule in the rule book is Rule 2 - Definitions. They aren't always the same as they are in Webster's Dictionary.
