What in heaven's name qualifies Ben Davis for the Top 25? I'm not sure they'd defeat Homestead.

I don't believe a 3-6 team should be in the top 25, but the Sagarin rating puts the Giants ahead of Homestead and would have them as a favorite in a head-to-head matchup. The Giants have played the #2 schedule in the state so far this year.

Much respect for the Giants, but they really haven't been competitive in any of those games. This just isn't their year. They lost to the best three teams on their schedule by an average of 33 points. Not much different than Homestead losing to Westfield and Carroll by 35 points. I'll give them the edge over the Spartans, but not by much (3-7 points). Sorry, it's hard to take anyone seriously by mention of them in the Top 25 with their resume.

Disclosure: I reference Sagarin for entertainment purposes only. It's fun to look at, and they are probably mostly right, but there's also MANY flaws. Sagarin also has Merrillville over Hamilton Southeastern and Warren Central, there's not one person from Indianapolis who'll point to that as accurate. Brownstown Central over Dwenger and East Noble. See the flaws?

Regardless, I don't care if BD is better than Homestead or not, neither team is even close to being a factor in the tournament. I was just using Homestead as a point of reference for my claim that BD isn't a Top 25 team.

Cp would be a field goal favorite vs ben davis at home

Which is a huge step up from last time they played! Outstanding improvement

I actually like Penn’s chances against CP… I know I am in the minority on this

I think this year will be much like 2023 at Penn. It's going to be tight. I don't know if it'll be as high scoring but it'll be a tight game. Much more winnable for Penn than many may think. I like CP as the winner but Penn has a good chance to win this one.

Is it that Penn is improved to CP or CP has come back to Penn?

I think Penn's O is much improved from last year, the D benefits from not being on the field all game long. However, the issue of quality opponents I think becomes a factor.

Penn has been punched in the mouth and responded once this year. But, it wasn't punch after punch, I think if CP wins the coin toss they should take the ball to test Penn's D right off the bat.

You're too smart to actually believe that. If you were handicapping that game you'd have Crown Point as an 11 or 12 point favorite.

@ CP:  CP by 6.5

@ BD:  CP by 2.5

Crown Point 7-0 291 87 9-  0 350 94 Won 9
Merrillville 6-1 279 111 7-  2 334 146 Won 6
Michigan City 5-2 192 147 6-  3 252 193 Lost 1
Chesterton 4-3 151 172 5-  4 174 211 Lost 2
LaPorte 2-5 90 200 3-  6 128 248 Won 1
Lake Central 2-5 104 189 3-  6 156 247 Won 1
Valparaiso 2-5 148 158 2-  7 180 222 Lost 1
Portage 0-7 74 265 0-  9 102 352 Lost 10

I think Chesterton down are 100% guaranteed wins. I think MC and Merrillville would be games but I think BD wins them in the end.

So, BD would be the second best team in the DAC, if they played a DAC schedule.

Likely.

This will piss @23andCounting off but BD and Crown Point both have Pike as a common opponent.

BD won by 17 and Crown Point by 21.

I think CP has "come down to earth a little bit" for lack of a better quote. CP is not as talented/ good as the past two years (but still really good). Penn is better than they were a year ago. Not sure about 2 years ago because I don't watch enough Penn to compare them to 2023 (who was really good but not great). I would agree with you on Penn's O/D situation and the issue with quality opponents/ preparedness for a big time game against a big time opponent (based on VERY recent history). I also like your coin toss logic but I know CP is high on their defense so they may want to test themselves right away. I wouldn't hate either choice but I like the testing of the Penn defense option better, in this instance.

If you have a burner on the sideline, first play throw it deep. See if the Penn secondary is as good as they have played all season. Penn relies on getting to the quarterback. If they can get to him either with the sack or with pressure their DBs can make plays down the field. The O, can become pass happy at times. Which is frustrating when they are a good running team. They have quality backs and even a back that if you get him into space can become a big problem. 3 is shifty hard to bring down, 4 is a hard runner that can brake a play wide open and 10 is the bruiser of the group.

I put more stock into transitive property than I do the Sagarin Ratings. You give a good example, but that's just one game. You have to look at overall body of work. Are we back to "Snider could beat Ben Davis in 2023" based on their common opponent in Warren Central? It goes beyond one game Temp. Ben Davis was embarrassed by the best three teams on their schedule. I'm not sold that those teams would do the same to Crown Point.

Fair points.

Those games were in back to back weeks for what it’s worth.

@Rodney is going to be unbearable when CP gets eliminated next month.

We may have to ban him from posting if CP makes it to Lucas.

I would love for cp to make it to Lucas

Maybe carmel gets half their team ejected or something

Then cp loses by a hundred at lucas

Just kidding I would be sad because im looking forward to carmel brownsburg.

Ben Davis body of work:

Playing cathedral to 1 touchdown

Cp body of work:

Beating portage

I will agree that the transitive property is just one data point and comparing Ben Davis to Crown Point SOLELY based on one game is short sighted.

However, what about taking a look at the rest of Pike’s schedule?

1.  Crown Point beats Pike by 21.

2.  Zionsville (who Temp has just outside the top 25) beats Pike by 20.

3.  Lawrence Central (who Temp has had ranked in the teens for the most part) beats Pike by 29.

4.  Warren Central (who Temp has had just outside the top 10) beats Pike by 3.

5.  Lawrence North (who Temp has had in the top 5 for the most part of the year) beats Pike by 35.

I’ve long stated that Crown Point can only beat the teams on its schedule but the three of the four data points above point to Crown Point being a fringe top 20 team.

If they get the opportunity to play Carmel, they’d better hope week 9 Carmel shows up.
