Alexandria - Eastbook ending

Question

Posted

Videos on Facebook/ X have been circulating about the ending to this one.

Alexandria attempted to kill the clock on 4th down, but QB threw it away with 4 seconds remaining.

Eastbrook attempts the Cal-Stanford Band play and scores. But there is a hold on Eastbrook. Following the penalty the ball is marked ready for play with one untimed down. Hail Mary - TD. 2pt conversion good and EB wins in OT.

Two questions

1. Can a game end on an offensive penalty? This caused the most confusion with the announcers I saw. Does the fact EB scored - and penalty had to be accepted - change things?

2. In hindsight, IF Alexandria’s QB runs around an extra 4 seconds but one of their OL holds or there is intentional grounding. Does that end the game?

#1.  A game/quarter/half CANNOT end on a penalty by the offense or the defense if accepted.  This is different than Professional rules.  (the) Acceptance would result in an untimed down (after the penalty enforcement).

#.2 No.  Again, an accepted penalty (offensive in this case) would force Alexandria to snap the ball for an untimed down to complete the game.

As I have said in a different posting:

The call was CORRECT.  An accepted penalty against either the Offense or Defense does NOT end the game.  In this case, AHS had to accept the penalty in order to take the TD off the board.  Since the clock ran out, EHS gets one UNTIMED DOWN... they then scored.

Absolutely applied correctly, no matter what the broadcasting team was screaming about.

Holding and intentional grounding are both offensive penalties. But in this case, their effect is markedly different. If the offense holds and time runs out, the period is extended by an untimed down. But if the offense commits intentional grounding, the period is not extended even if the penalty is accepted, because the penalty for that foul includes loss of down.
