Coach Nowlin Posted January 15 Posted January 15 I think it could be more prevalent than you think at these lower level schools in D1: Problem (other than the obvious problem with the players themselves choosing to do this) is that if folks really had an "in" like this, they just can't help themselves and end up alerting books with large sums..... long game and smaller chunks (personally I think that is happening way more with PROPS then anything in college/pro sports, especially hoops: Guy is at O/U 7.5 Rebounds, he knows how to keep that on the UNDER and not make it seem like anything. A couple hundred bucks here and there won't flag anything... When you start doing high end 5 figure wagers.... SIRENS go off. rinse repeat 1 Quote
Coach Nowlin Posted January 15 Posted January 15 As a consumer of sports investments and College Basketball being my favorite and most profitable, I will say also, that those mid to low major schools do not have props though, but most major conferences have them for states that allow prop betting for Professional College Sports 1 Quote
Muda69 Posted January 15 Posted January 15 I'm still grateful I haven't fallen prey to this sports gambling nonsense. Betting on how many rebounds an individual player will have during a given game just screams of desperation to me. Desperation probably caused by a gambling addiction. Quote

They fly under the radar until tourney time. The size of those bets though is insane. It was those bets that triggered the red flags. 1 Quote

Other Side of the Coin: As an adult, who can control their fun money and create a balance that has bills, savings, retirement, funsies all taken care of, then why would that scream desperation ? I play horses typically in some capacity Wed thru Sunday and international tracks and wager on College hoops and NFL with that being a 70/30 split. Its a form of entertainment for me, I do it responsibly, this shocks me, your stance from the years of libertarianism and your constant message of consenting adult choice should not be governed nor considered "desperation" Quote

Probably because I grew up rather poor I don't view money as fungible as you do. Better to save it or invest it in something less risky. I can still hold that view and acknowledge that as an adult it is ultimately your choice. I just don't hope it doesn't spiral into an addiction, for you and your family's sake. And where have I stated in this thread that such wagering should be governed? Quote

Sounds Good: Just know, I am not desperate 🙂 Understand the sentiment and I agree, not a choice for many, kudos too, all good here, But imo, my portfolio has many long term investments that are very stable and consistent. Retirement , check, etc etc I wager $10 on a Purdue Parlay to enjoy why I watch is harmless FOR ME, but again, I have discipline and have shown this since Indiana adopted mobile, but I have been a card player, casino goer over the years since 21 You should go out to Saratoga Springs, you don't even need to wager, it is a fine place for old school small town awesomeness Quote

Several years ago my spouse and I each spent $20 playing slot machines in the casino of a cruise ship. It really wasn't fun and we both felt kind of dirty afterwards, like we had wasted our hard-earned money. If I ever get the urge to gamble I'll play Las Vegas Poker & Blackjack on my Mattel Intellivision. 1 Quote

If I ever get the urge to gamble I'll play Las Vegas Poker & Blackjack on my Mattel Intellivision. the only cruise I was on, roulette table, wild, and I was too dumb, this dude hits a number and had like $5 on it at 35-1 odds, then like most people they leave the original bet on and collect, this dude just added like $10 more, hits again, same number hit like 6 times in a row and others at the table started following and I was like its not going to hit again, its not going to hit again..... yup, dude cleared THOUSANDS and others cleared 100s and I was like huh.... then pit boss shut it down Went to Vegas for first time in 19 years this past summer meet my wife out there, she was there for her work show and flew out to celebrate 20th year, and it had changed so much and I also was like, man, pretty scuzzy environment from my previous experience. Not lining up my next trip anytime soon, but I did see Metallica may do a residence at the SPHERE that could get me to go back there. Quote
Coach Nowlin Posted January 16 Posted January 16 I know folks who go to Horse tracks and have a blast and do not even wager a single penny Hence Saratoga Springs. Pay $7. get a picnic table and you get to bring anything you want in as long as no glass bottles. Watch some races, enjoy beautiful upstate New York and its amazing town, full of vibrance, restaurants and culture. Just Saying Quote

He had a formula to work through for his picks. He tried teaching me once, but man, there was a lot of detail. I did get some tips on reading a racing form. I don't bet a lot of cash, but do have an account on TwinSpires.com. I think it was 3 years ago, I put a single bet on a lonshot to win the Derby....and nailed it. I saw the horse was decent mudder and took a shot. That bought a lot of beer that summer. There were 3 tracks he refused to bet at. He was certain they were rigged. Saratoga was one of them. I cannot think of the other 2. 1 Quote
