Original home of the Pistons....weren't they even called the Zollner Pistons?

Zollner Pistons when they played their home games at North Side. Then the Coliseum was built on the "Bypass" around Fort Wayne for a bigger venue to compete with the larger markets. I believe that's when the team name changed to Fort Wayne Pistons. Not going off resources here, just memory.

The Coliseum hosted the All-Star game in 1953. Boston was terrified hosting it the following season hoping they could live up to what Fort Wayne did the year before.

I believe the Piston's first season in Detroit was 1958.

There's a lot of sports history in Fort Wayne, including the Fort Wayne Kekiongas who were part of the women's softball league that was featured in the movie 'A League of Their Own.'

Not only the birthplace of the NBA, but also home of the first nighttime baseball game. Allegedly, Babe Ruth hit his longest home run of his career in an exhibition game in Fort Wayne.

They would also practice in the fieldhouse at the old New Haven High School which was torn down several years ago after serving as New Haven Junior High since the current building was opened in 1977.

Didn't know that bit..........good stuff.

In the end, Fort Wayne just couldn't compete with the bigger markets. I think our only chance would be hockey. I honestly think we could support an NHL team.

Quote

The notoriously challenging and always obscure Barkley Marathons trail running race came and went with just a whimper this year.

But the 40 runners who started this peculiar event near Wartburg, Tennessee, all left in anguish.

On Saturday morning at 6 a.m., Barkley creator and race director Gary Cantrell, also commonly known as Lazarus Lake in the trail running world, lit a cigarette in a parking lot of Tennessee’s Frozen Head State Park, thus signaling the official start of this year’s race. About 40 hopeful and courageous trail runners from 15 states and 15 countries set off into the park’s treacherous terrain to achieve the near-impossible amid cold, wet, muddy, foggy, and very slippery conditions.

As with every other Barkley in recent years, this year’s field of runners was chock full of highly accomplished competitors with high-profile results, including what is believed to be a record 10 women.

None succeeded. After a little more than 38 hours, this year’s Barkley Marathons ended the way it has on 26 previous occasions—with zero finishers.

Yep, this race has had zero finishers 26 out of the 40 times it has been held.   Not for the weak of heart.

There is a pretty good documentary about this race from 2014.  Recommended:  https://barkleymovie.com/

May be an image of football and text that says '"You haven't lived until a robot corrects your strike zone ten times. It's like my wife watching me parallel park- technically helpful, spiritually devastating. At least when the ABS system corrects me, it doesn't also bring up a call I missed back in 2019." -Umpire Lance Barksdale on ABS Strike Zone 2'

If it comes to the the point where machines are adjudicating more the 50% of the decisions in an athletic contest then it's only a matter before the actual human players are also replaced by machines.

Agreed. And he was arguing a call against the player that refused to play the other night.

I guess I’m old fashioned, but I would’ve cut ties with the kid after the game. I know it’s a different world today.
