Any HS program where the head coach doesn't have the power to dismiss a player from his team is bound to be poorly run. And any coach worth his salt would never accept such a job. I don't believe for a minute that Brunson can't dismiss him. But I'm not the least bit surprised that he didn't.
-
I just had a feeling that he was the kind of coach who would let something like this slide in the name of winning. I don’t think he’s the only one who would. And I doubt he’ll get much pressure from anybody who matters to fully dismiss this player. Looks like my intuition was correct.
-
I don’t know exactly what happened or what the punishment was. But when I was told about the incident, I responded to the person who told me that Brunson would only slap him on the wrist.

They might be. But I’d be shocked if anybody gets past East Central this year.

South Bend Clay to close.

Casey Whitten…there’s a blast from the past.

Well, I only saw DMs from a certain coach. So I can’t testify to any others - only hearsay that it happens. Whether there’s an explicit solicitation for a transfer or not, it ought to be against the rules for coaches at one member institution to initiate contact with a player from another one. I have no issue with transfers, in general. But tampering isn’t appropriate.
-
There are coaches who reach out directly to players at other area schools. The texts/DMs I’ve seen were carefully worded to avoid directly asking for a transfer. And, yes, I’ve seen a couple of these with my own eyes. I’ve heard that the track/field girls at Memorial really liked him, FWIW.

Rupp isn’t coaching any longer. He stepped aside prior to last year due to family and work commitments. Travis Cross handled OC duties last year. Also, I really don’t know what Hurley’s relationship with Zirkelbach is.

My problem with this is the degree to which sufficient knowledge is distributed among the people who cast votes. I’m not even sure of a good answer to the problem. Coaches (and players, for that matter) in a conference are in a very good position to determine the best players in that conference. They’ve seen all of them play at least one full game.

Liam Bryant’s transfer has cleared the IHSAA with full eligibility.

This is right. I once talked to Mike Neu about the Colts finding Danny Pinter. They came by, as they often do, and asked about anybody Neu thought they should look at. Pinter had just made the move to IOL that season. They looked at his tape and saw a lineman with unusually good downfield blocking. They asked Neu if that was typical for him, Neu said it was. And the Colts took a Ball State lineman in the 5th round.

Screagle is right. If a player has NFL chops, the scouts will find them. That’s their job. And gobs of guys who don’t play P5 — or in the elite tier of P5 — make it to the NFL. There is zero question in my mind that a player should value playing time over destination. They do hang in a balance, of course. Playing time in the SEC would be better than playing time in the Mountain West. But playing in the Mountain West worked out pretty well for that “other” QB named Allen. That’s not to say Brady wouldn’t play at Ole Miss (or wherever). I have no idea. But I don’t think he’d be hurting his chances at a pro career by going G5. If he has what it takes, they’ll find him.

It’s interesting - bc Boyd at GS has one more year while Fisher is in his class. But, assuming football was a high motivation for the Xfer, I kind of like the moxie in (presumably) believing he can beat Fisher out. But nothing’s guaranteed, and I’m sure that was communicated to him. I believe they both train with Tyler Norton at TNT.

Thanks for tracking that down and posting it!

LOL...yeah, I'd say Montgomery's move was wise and understandable. But he's obviously a rare case. Most college coaches have traditionally liked their recruits to play more than one sport. But it seems this is becoming less the case. Apparently, Auburn's baseball coaches pressed on Cam Tilly to give up football. And it may have been a good decision on his part, as well. That gave him the opportunity to play for USA Baseball's 18U team. But I don't think it's always the best decision. And you see it happening even earlier than high school.
-
It's possible. He has not hidden the possibility that he may ultimately give football up for baseball. The expectation right now is that he'll play next season. But there's a long time between now and August.
-
I think that would be great for both the PAC and Tecumseh.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Memorial's QB position next season (assuming he's eligible, which is a whole other discussion). I've never seen the kid play. I know he got some varsity time when Boyd was hurt -- but they didn't pass much in those games. They passed quite a bit in his JV games, tho. And there's also the issue of Fisher and baseball. He considers that his primary sport.
-
It’s official now, and hardly a secret anymore, so I think it’s safe to discuss on here. Liam Bryant, a sophomore who was Tanner Boyd’s backup at QB for Gibson Southern this past season, has enrolled at Memorial for the spring semester.

A makeup call for blowing it with Devon Mockobee? I’m happy for Clay. Great player and athlete. But it still amazes me that IU was that badly asleep behind the wheel that they wouldn’t even offer Mockobee a PWO…despite Darin Ward being an IU FB alum.

Look at Klem, gettin’ the All-State nod as a freshman…and at DL, no less. Impressive!
