  1. I’m always happy when the IHSAA does something good. And this is definitely something good. Bravo!!
  2. I’m picking Bosse over Jasper. The Bulldogs and their high-octane offense are due to win one of these matchups. And I think Memorial/MD will be closer than people think. I think Memorial will win, but I don’t expect a blowout.
  3. How about Alex Broshears with the “Welcome to SIAC football, cuz” Pick 6 of his freshman cousin Hunter on the 2nd play of the game?
  4. You can’t pay too much attention to early season rankings. But, as a Memorial fan, I wish that I really believed we were the 7th best team in 4A. IMO, too many question marks that weren’t really answered by a costly-mistake-laden performance from Jasper. North will be a tougher test - especially up front.
  5. This was confirmed to me by a Reitz player - whatever that counts for. It still wouldn’t surprise me if he eventually finds his way back on the roster. But, according to this kid, he’s used up all his chances.
  6. Is he related to Patrick? He and Schiff made a heckuva tandem.
  7. Hearing there was another incident and this is now permanent. Also that Andy Owen had been pushing to keep the kid from being dismissed - which is unsurprising to me. I’m glad Archie isn’t around to see that sort of thing happening with his last name.
  8. Fisher and Schulz were good. Ellspermann and Broshears were terrific. But, man, Memorial has some work to do on both lines. Just…not good. Jasper just made a series of fatal mistakes at the worst times/situations. Uncharacteristically sloppy performance from the Wildcats.
  9. Jasper’s just shot themselves in the foot a couple times - especially snapping it over the punter’s head in their own territory with 0:28 on the clock. Ouch. The offsides on 4th and 5 was another killer. On the bright side for them, I think they’re winning the LOS and have shown they can move the ball when they execute. It’ll be a competitive 2nd half and the game certainly isn’t over.
  10. I’ll say it again: keep your eyes peeled for Eliot Smith for Jasper. He’s just a sophomore. But that kid is going to be a special player. He’s big, he’s fast, and he’s aggressive.
  11. Heh...why would he move? He's going to miss the Harrison game. Reitz's JV would probably beat Harrison.
  12. There's certainly no question about that. It would be the case if he was playing for Herman Byers, Bob Padgett, or John Hart, too -- and, I'd bet, Tony Lewis. I'm guessing that the explanation will be about not wanting to ruin a young man's life and future football career for one mistake, etc. But anybody who buys that is a fool.
  13. Any HS program where the head coach doesn't have the power to dismiss a player from his team is bound to be poorly run. And any coach worth his salt would never accept such a job. I don't believe for a minute that Brunson can't dismiss him. But I'm not the least bit surprised that he didn't.
  14. I just had a feeling that he was the kind of coach who would let something like this slide in the name of winning. I don’t think he’s the only one who would. And I doubt he’ll get much pressure from anybody who matters to fully dismiss this player. Looks like my intuition was correct.
  15. I don’t know exactly what happened or what the punishment was. But when I was told about the incident, I responded to the person who told me that Brunson would only slap him on the wrist.
  16. They might be. But I’d be shocked if anybody gets past East Central this year.
  17. Alma mater of Jon Gruden and IU basketball legend Don Schlundt.
  18. Casey Whitten…there’s a blast from the past.
  19. Well, I only saw DMs from a certain coach. So I can’t testify to any others - only hearsay that it happens. Whether there’s an explicit solicitation for a transfer or not, it ought to be against the rules for coaches at one member institution to initiate contact with a player from another one. I have no issue with transfers, in general. But tampering isn’t appropriate.
  20. There are coaches who reach out directly to players at other area schools. The texts/DMs I’ve seen were carefully worded to avoid directly asking for a transfer. And, yes, I’ve seen a couple of these with my own eyes. I’ve heard that the track/field girls at Memorial really liked him, FWIW.
  21. Rupp isn’t coaching any longer. He stepped aside prior to last year due to family and work commitments. Travis Cross handled OC duties last year. Also, I really don’t know what Hurley’s relationship with Zirkelbach is.
  22. My problem with this is the degree to which sufficient knowledge is distributed among the people who cast votes. I’m not even sure of a good answer to the problem. Coaches (and players, for that matter) in a conference are in a very good position to determine the best players in that conference. They’ve seen all of them play at least one full game.
  23. Liam Bryant’s transfer has cleared the IHSAA with full eligibility.
  24. This is right. I once talked to Mike Neu about the Colts finding Danny Pinter. They came by, as they often do, and asked about anybody Neu thought they should look at. Pinter had just made the move to IOL that season. They looked at his tape and saw a lineman with unusually good downfield blocking. They asked Neu if that was typical for him, Neu said it was. And the Colts took a Ball State lineman in the 5th round.
