BNL's season is going to live/die, sink/swim, succeed/fail based on the health of their core O-linemen.  We have 6-7 quite capable of dominating opponents.  A lot of underclassmen after that. We have a lot of capable skill positions on both sides of the ball.

Upside: 1 or 2 players, maybe, playing full time both ways.  A few more contributing on both sides of the ball.  A lot of 1-way starters.

Downside: We lost a lot of good, impactful seniors last year.

IMO this is a must at the 4A level and up.. and probably 3A, as well.

I hate to beat a dead horse here, but all of those citations represent retrospective studies analyzing data generated under uncontrolled conditions, i.e., practices and games. And they all make the leap: “We use Guardian caps and we have fewer concussions. Therefore, Guardian caps are effective in reducing concussions.” This is called a post hoc, propter hac logical fallacy. It’s very common. Since the result is all you’re after, it’s not that important to you what the reason is that you’re experiencing fewer concussions. But if you were a science teacher, and one of your students offered such a conclusion, you’d have to flunk him or her.

Let me be clear. I’m not saying Guardian caps don’t work. All I’m saying is the only truly scientific evidence shows they are of little to no benefit.

Its not the concussive blows that are the only detriment, though. Repeated blows are part of the concussion spectrum, as well.

Sure those MASSIVE collisons, maybe the guardian cap doesn't prevent those individuals from being concussed... But there is simply no way, over time, a padded surface isn't consistently better than one that isn't.

I'm also very confused by the Stanford article you post that has quotes like this... FWIW-- they only tested collusions that are head to head..

"The researchers were hesitant to support the cap, which costs about $50, but they noted that it's possible the cap provides some protection."

"but on average the caps provided 15% to 20% more protection than blows to the head with only a helmet." Granted, this was based on one particular type of blow.. but still

In my eyes, when we are talking about REAL people and not numbers... idk how you can read those two quotes and not say "Guardian Caps work". Literally.. "some protection" should be enough. Working doesn't mean "full proof".

I mean, hired from within the program. Coach Bragg is from Illinois but he’s been around here for quite a while and was with coach Glesing. Same with coach Cooley. He’s been around here for a while and was with coach Fields at NA. I thought I had read that Barker was an Asst for Steve Weber?

I understand what you're saying now.

And I just googled it, you are correct. Their defense looked good in our 7 on 7.

If it works for you, that’s really all that matters. You’re getting the desired result (eliminating concussions), whatever the cause, so keep on doing what you’re doing.

Having said that, I highly doubt that your practices control all the variables that could have an effect on the outcome and, therefore, you cannot draw scientifically valid cause and effect conclusions. And one trainer’s opinion is not the only one who doubts the effectiveness of Guardian caps in preventing concussions. Try the American Academy of Neurology. https://www.aan.com/PressRoom/Home/PressRelease/1347, or, more recently, the Stanford School of Medicine https://scopeblog.stanford.edu/2023/03/28/padded-helmet-cover-shows-little-protection-for-football-players/

Bragg, Cooley, Barker, Vogel, and Parker were for sure guys who were elevated. I thought Moore was a guy who was elevated when their previous coach left. So, that’s on me for bad information.

I thought you were saying "from that town originally".. yes I think Tyson was the OL coach before he took over. My bad.

Barker wasn't a BNL asst coach, though, was he? At the time of his hire. I thought he was in Bloomington.

This is why anecdotal evidence is insufficient to allow valid conclusions to be drawn. “I can't remember the last concussion we had in practice. I don't think we've had one since we've worn the skull caps.” This is useful information, but not nearly enough to draw any conclusions about cause and effect. The scientific method works … when it is properly used.

But, the only information/data we need, is our own.  They work, or how about this... they work for us.  And we've changed nothing else in 6 years, but the skull caps.. 🤷‍♂️

But again, soft surface/padded surface hitting padded surface is always better than hard surface hitting hard surface.

Onne trainer offering an opinion doesn't do a whole lot for me.

  7. Guys, undoubtedly a soft surface hitting a soft surface will reduce that impact vs hard surface vs hard surface.

Yes they work. No they aren't full proof.

We've worn them for 6 years. Our kids wear them every single time their helmet is on, unless its a game. Even both our scrimmages we will be wearing the skull caps, even at camp this summer, our kids wore skull caps.

I can't remember the last concussion we had in practice. I don't think we've had one since we've worn the skull caps.

It’s James Bragg. But overall records don’t mean much to me. I think Tyson Moore at Seymour is very good. But one thing I’ve noticed is, that none of these programs have hired their current HC from outside the school.

    What does this mean?

Idk, but Tyson isn't from Seymour. I don't think BNLs coach is from Bedford.

Buddy, you can bring Brownstown down here anytime you want. They’ve been trying to find matchup opponents for a while but nobody but Silver Creek will agree to play them so they’re forced to schedule Louisville and Terra Haute teams.

Well.. we play Seymour, which outside of Col East/North, not many better rivalries in So Ind, or better attended....

Our other non conf is Madison, after the 2yr contract with Indian Creek..

Every other game is a conf game..

We've played FC multiple times in JV/FR the last few years and I think we are playing each other, at that level, this season, as well.

Neither team was that good. But I haven’t been impressed with Silver Creek the 3 times I’ve seen them. But I guess as terrible as the HHC is, they’d compete in it.

    100% they would

That game was more of a 3 score game. Unless we count the garbage time TD with 30 seconds left.

“Following a scoreless third period, the Highlanders put the game away midway through the fourth quarter with a 52-yard scoring drive. Andrew Gibson pounded it in from the 5 to cap the march and put Floyd up 27-7 with 6:24 left.

The Dragons added a late touchdown — with less than a minute left— on a 1-yard run by Wyatt Hoffman.”

After they had absolutely blasted you guys the year before, right.  At Floyd.. I watched the film.

About a month away from the season getting underway.  How is everyone's teams shaping up for the season?  Heard Salem's numbers where down?  Any pre season news?

We're getting some injured guys back in the fold (3 guys coming back this week).. just got back from team camp, we thought that went well. BNL took it to us Saturday morning in 7 on 7, we lost some competitiveness, imo.

It's been a great summer working with ours dudes. Wouldn't trade it.

Last years game looked like Varsity vs JV. Floyd Central had losing records the past 2 seasons and played the entire season without their best player. This years team should be good so we will see how SC matches up with them.

FC beat them by 2 scores lol ...

Btw.. that was SCs worst team in the last 8 years, congrats on beating them, I guess.

SCs best player transferred away before last season.. if we are keeping track of every single little thing.

I'm more so talking about the future. They seem to be in an area that is growing and has the potential for more growth. Would the MSC still want them if they elevated up to the 5A Level in Footballa and 4A in football? Of course, I have no idea if that type of growth will come to fruition.

They'd have to grow by 40% to get to 5A.. not sure that's going to happen, could I guess.

To answer.. probably not, but I hope we could keep them on the schedule.

They have 900 students, bottom of 5A is 1500+

Copy. Is it fair to say from a males sport big 3 that they're ready for the Hoosier Hills in basketball and baseball?

I don't understand the need. Like.. they'd probably get considerably better attended games rolling in the MSC in football/basketball.

In basketball/baseball they can schedule all those schools anyways...

What do they gain by moving conferences?

Thanks! I talked to the one maintenance guy during the Adams County Fair about a year ago. The Jay County info was from the school attorney that I work with occasionally & we talked late February on it. Everyone in NE/EC Indiana & NW/WC Ohio are looking to get turf it seems. I don't like it from an injury possibility standpoint. I understand it is supposed to reduce costs but I'm not sold on it. I know Ohio schools want it so they can host playoff games & try to get part of the revenue.

    I'm a fan.

That whole stadium needs to be rebuilt, not just the field.  The scoreboard, stands, lights and anything else associated has fallen into extreme disrepair.  Let's hope they start from scratch and replace the entire thing.

Is that not the plan? Holy cow if they are actually just going to slap a turf field in the middle of that area?

  16. 2 hours ago, Basementbias said:

South Adams is tearing the grass up for turf. Supposedly everyone but Southern Wells will have turf soon in the ACAC. Woodlan, Heritage, & Bluffton already put turf in. Leaves Jay County & AC as the last grass holdouts besides Southern Wells. I know Jay County is definitely getting turf & moving the direction of the stadium a bit. There are plans drawn out for Adams Central to get turf, but last summer one of the maintenance guys said it wouldn't happen due to an underground spring possibly under Minnich field. Think most AC fans would prefer our really nice grass field over turf. @FlyingHigh & @260AC do you have any solid information on this?

Hey man.. great stuff keep me updated!

Not football related but congrats to Silver Creek on the state title in baseball. Mitchell got a semi state appearance. Good showings by the conferences.

BC was in a semi state as well after beating Providence in 9 innings.  BC started 4 FR this season

Good perspective.  I am sure it was meant to be respectful, but some take it differently.  I am sure when North Dakota, Eastern Michigan, Marquette and others selected their nicknames and mascots, they meant it as a compliment and in the most respectful way.  Still, all of have changed.

Who would have thought the nickname Colonials with the mascot of George Washington for a university named after him would have been deemed offensive????  SMH

Well.... all the other things we've allowed them to deem offensive, yeah that probably well goes along with that.

    I mean... the Cleveland Guardians?

As a fan, it just feels boring.

If I was a fan of another team aside from East, I would feel like the schedule layout helped East stay unbeaten in conference longer than they would’ve been if it had been switched up.

For instance, those last three years under Gaddis had some teams that got off to really slow starts. In 2018, I’m not sure East would’ve been unbeaten in conference play had they not started off with Seymour and Jennings County. New Albany nearly beat us in week 5 and BNL nearly beat us in week 9. Had either or both of those games taken place in weeks 3 or 4 then I’m not sure East makes it to 2021 with a 14 year HHC unbeaten streak.

So that’s why I’m in favor of switching the schedule up every other year. If Floyd Central and New Albany want to keep their rivalry in week 9 then they should but it would be nice to mix everything else up.

That doesn't seem like much of a reason to switch it up, imo.
