Unfortunately don't have my old Mac Book where I could readily pull the bracket from 2019 and not sure GID has the archive like they used too. But I posted what a hypothetical playoff format would look like for that year on here and CG was comfortably in.

I am not disagreeing with you in 2019...if you say CG was top 10, ok. All I am saying, that may not be the case the year prior or after, depending on how the other 31 teams did in 6A those seasons.  Assuming CG can maintain an in-state difficult schedule for years to come, that will help using your formula.

When you say impact, are you talking about sectional title or higher or something like semi-state or higher?

In 2020, LCC was 2-3 heading into post-season.  Those two wins came against Benton Central and Northwestern.  LCC finished the season 5-4, losing in 1A semi-finals to South Adams.  In 2021, in 2A, LCC finished 5-4 before post-season.  They finished the season 8-5 and picked up a sectional title in 2A ... which provided enough points to keep them in 2A via SF for another cycle.

Sectional title or higher....that is an accomplishment.  Even a sectional runner up that gave the expected champion a heck of a game, making them earn it.

CG finished the regular season 9th in Sagarin that year I believe. They had a killer schedule.

they did have a tough schedule....they beat LN, LC, Pike and BD.  (I was wrong in my previous note)  They lost pretty big to New Pal, who did win 4A.  I am not sure those 4 wins would rank them top 10, understanding the SOS matters.

But it is possible had the year been different, the other teams in their class could have had stronger seasons, so there is no guarantee a team like CG in 2019 is a lock for qualifying.  And that would have been a shame to have them on the outside looking in....that young team absolutely did develop over the year, nearly winning a 6A title, setting themselves up for a historic 2 year run.

Its a great discussion...I can see both sides of this debate....my concern is for the teams "on the bubble" that can absolutely make an impact in the playoffs.

Please identify the multiple state champs who would not have qualified for post season play under a format that includes 50% of the teams in each class, determined by a formula that recognizes a combination of W-L record and strength of schedule.

Interesting challenge....Roncalli won a state title in 2002 and started the season 0-4.  Would they have qualified for the playoffs that year with a 5-4 regular season record?

2019, Center Grove started out the season 1-4, finished the regular season 4-5 and went to the 6A state championship game losing 20-17 to Carmel, nearly pulling off the win.  Would a 4-5 team with a total of 32 teams in their class qualify for the tournament that year? Most years?  (note: CG beat Warren and Ben Davis in the playoffs in which they lost to both during the regular season....BD pretty handily)

I'm guessing history is not limited to those 2 examples above of teams that have got into the playoffs with .500 or sub .500 records that have made an impact in the playoffs.

A little update...he is keeping it close to the vest understandbly, but is back in Ann Arbor hoping to return soon....

His tweet with an update and thanks......just a class guy.  Get well soon Coach Hart!!

3 peat for center grove? What say you?

    Screenshot_20221009-224301_Adobe Acrobat.jpg

Appreciate you putting out this bracket.....to me, the most intriguing first round games include:

    • Carroll vs Penn
    • Elkhart vs Warsaw
    • Homestead vs HSE
    • Westfield vs Carmel
    • Brownsburg vs Ben Davis (a slobberknocker for sure)
    • CG vs FC.  (FC has improved and the Coach West and Coach Moore history)

  7. With Center Grove's victory over Lawrence North last night, the Trojans completed their 3rd straight season undefeated in the conference.  While there will be no conference championship for the Trojans this year, the records will indicate they were 21-0 over the last 3 seasons during MIC play.

I went back and looked at records of MIC play to determine if this feat had occurred previously.  Warren only lost one game during 2009-11 seasons (Carmel) and Ben Davis lost one game (Carmel) during the 1999-2001 seasons.  But I could not find where any team previously went undefeated for 3 seasons.  Please check me if I am incorrect.

Regardless, what a historical run for the Trojans in a tremendous football conference.  Congrats Coach Moore, staff and players during this period!

FWIW, Mike Alstott is from Joliet, 30 miles to the south.  But Purdue does get their fare share of players as Aidan O'Connell and Charlie Jones are both from the North Shore.

I don't disagree....but didn't both start their careers elsewhere....Jones at Buffalo and then Iowa....O'Connell D3 Wheaton College and walk-on at Purdue.

But I do agree that Purdue has probably hit the Chicago region well over the years.  I think the point is that with Illinois improving, that sets them up to take a larger piece of that pie.

Both Mr. Nelson and Mr. Kelly look out of shape to me.  It's like they have their big contracts so they can coast for a few seasons...........................

Sure feels that way......Ryan Kelly got thrown to the ground last night and somehow "injured his hip".  Felt like he wanted nothing to do with playing.....

Michigan and Notre Dame generally get who they want out of Chicagoland. But, Wisconsin and Iowa (Michigan State to an extens) have been feasting on what they don't want and have been getting some highly rated players occasionally. I think it would turn the needle towards Illinois in Chicagoland if Bielima starts producing in Champaign at a higher level than those 3. Champaign isn't as nice as Madison and probably Iowa City, but they tend to recruit Chicago well when they have a positive buzz in Champaign.

    I ran out of votes....agree 100%

As Mr. Doyel at the Indianapolis Star states Matt Ryan is done, over the hill.   It would almost have been better if the Colts had lost, falling to 1-3-1.    That way there would have been more pressure to let Sam Ehlinger play and bench Ryan.

Matt Ryan has 10 fumbles and 7 int's.  Wentz had 7 int's the entire season, with 27 TD's.  (almost 3600 passing yds)

No, I am not a Wentz fan.....but looks like Ryan certainly isn't the answer.  Now, I would take Ryan matching Wentz's stats in a New York minute......

To Ryan's defense (at least a portion) is the horrific O line play by the highest paid OL in the league.  What has happened to Q and Kelly?  They look bad.  I've been watching a fair amount of video of them missing blitzes, getting fooled on stunts, and simply getting manhandled 1 on 1.  Denver didn't need to blitz last night, because 4 D lineman kept whipping 5 O lineman.

Again, made me recall that era. Tim was the son of Ben Davis Coach Bob Wilbur whom the older brother of my friend in elementary school played for. Morten Andersen kicked for them and he missed the xp that lost the semistate game to Reitz. Wow. Bob Stephenson played for Reitz btw.  Tim was a really good punt returner.

Also, 1981 was a big disaster season for Northwestern while they were in that long losing streak and Dennis Green was their coach. Who didn't beat them.

Who could forget Babe. The 1982 season was Corso's last and they were better, but, as a familiar IU story, they did not have enough dudes to be above average. And how many above average coaches has IU FB had  Corso to now? I liked Mallory a lot. He got enough dudes at times to make some decent teams, but IU did not make enough commitment to fb because it was always about basketball.

Tim Wilbur returned a punt for a TD in the 1979 Holiday Bowl that ended up being the final margin in IU's upset over a 11-0 BYU team led by QB Marc Wilson.  I had forgotten he was Bob Wilbur's son.....

Northwestern...I also forgot that was the Dennis Green era....wow.  Big fan of Babe....I follow him on Twitter to this day.  He is very close with Troy Aikman, and I believe used to (still does?) announce for the Cowboys.  Babe sadly lost his son to cancer (was a football player at UTEP) and he still tweets about him often.  Heart-wrenching.

Mallory was the best coach for IU...certainly in the recent era.  I believe Terry Hoeppner would have been great as well.  He had them moving in the right direction until cancer cut his life very short.

Got me curious and looked up that season. Horrible road loss to Minnesota did them in. Game in which Clifford was knocked out of game.  Today, a power 5 team with an even record (enough FBS wins) gets it in a decent $ bowl game. In 1980, 6-5 put a non-traditional power on the sideline for the holidays. The difference between 79 and 80 for IU was one regular season victory, that horrible loss at Minnesota.

Great analysis!!  Spot on regarding the loss to Minnesota.

I enjoyed going to a number of games during that 2 year span.  Clifford was excellent...IU had a safety by the name of Tim Wilbur that was a treat to watch.  Really good backs with Lonnie Johnson and Mike Harkrader.  Lee Corso's son Steve was a WR on those teams.

I looked as well at the 1981 season...only won 3 games....all Big 10 wins over Northwestern, Minnesota and Purdue....by a total margin of only 5 points.  Babe Laufenberg became the starting QB and enjoyed a few years in the NFL.

On the flip side, that was a pretty big win for Bielema in my opion. He can now go to places Wisconsin has feasted in recruiting, especially Chicagoland, and say what they had is now in Champaign. Curios to see where this goes with Bielema as I think Illinois has long been a gross underachiever.

Great observation...I think Wisconsin and Iowa have both had recruiting success in Chicago area....Michigan as well.   Bielema may just grab some turf of his own in that region.....

The 1980 team had high expectations I recall, then opened with a horrible home loss. Felt like the low point was the 1983 season with Sam Wyche's one and done before landing the Bengals gig.

Great call.  I don't believe they were ranked top 20 preseason, but we just outside ranking.  Lost opener to Iowa at home, then went 4-1.  Fell down the stretch ending 6-5, including a 1 pt loss to Purdue in the Bucket game.  Purdue was ranked #9 preseason.

Ekiyor and Stepp were sophomores on the 2015 team that lost to Avon and Werner and Stewart (BC commit) were juniors. QB Max Bortenschlager was a senior.

2016 team was loaded but oft hurt. Stepp tore his hamstring on his first carry from scrimmage that year and came back for the playoffs but only played when the offense was in the red zone. Stewart had a pretty significant leg injury as well.

Those teams in 2015 and 2016 had some great top end talent but didn't have near the depth suited for a 6A run like Cathedral has enjoyed the last few years. Cathedral has some studs at the top this year (not quite as deep as those teams) but they are in a much better position to make a run this year given this team is much deeper across the board.

    Gotcha...depth does matter.....

The Cathedral vs CG game in 2016 was a shootout.  I don't believe Stepp played, but Werner (all over the field), Stewart and others played.  44-41 CG with Yeast having 5 TD's I believe.  Cathedral also had a receiver (forgetting his name) that I believe went to Western Michigan.  He had a huge game that night....

Been some incredible games in that series and glad it will continue for years to come.

    Fair enough.

May not win it this year, but I think they are much more suited this go around as opposed to the last cycle. CHS had some phenomenal top end talent in 15 and 16 (Bortenschlager, Werner, Stepp) but not nearly as deep as they are this year.

Wasn't Ekiyor on the 2016 team?  I appreciate he may have been an underclassman, but obviously given his Alabama career, pretty special.  Also, I believe there was a safety that went to Boston College out of high school.  Forgetting his name.

Maryland, Ohio State, USC, Alabama, Boston College recruits.....that is some pretty dang impressive talent.  If this team has more, that is saying something.

Question is how far do they go without a passing game. I checked on their season stats and it is quite evident they don't have one. I would say they are reminiscent of CG the past couple of years, but even CG had a 150 yd plus passing average a game. It was there to supplement when the run game was slowed down, and it could if necessary. New Pal has that kind of offense, a great rushing attack behind a talented and and an even better passing game than CG dreamed of having. Question is will New Pal's defense be athletic enough and tactical enough to contain the run. Notice I didn't say stop. I really don't see stopping Roncalli's run game. The hope is to keep Hansen from rushing 200 plus yards and limit the 3rd and shorts or goal line stands. I think, honestly, it will come down to coaching and defense. Which coach will have the best scheme for the opposing offense and make the better adjustments throughout the game. And who will get the most pressure on the outside with the most disciplined, yet aggressive LBs in the middle. Should be an interesting game and I am looking forward to seeing how they do against Elder.

LOL.....Looking at Tayven Jackson's stats his junior and senior seasons, and now Tyler Cherry's stats this year, guessing Coach Moore and his staff is very pleased.....

  19. I remember many years ago as a teen, sitting in the endzone (called knothole seats back in the day) an IU team led by QB Tim Clifford spanked Wisconsin 24-0 (1980)  Year prior, IU beat Wisconsin 3-0.  The 1979 IU team beat a 11-0 BYU team in the Holiday Bowl.

Man, how both programs have went in opposite directions......

The story was there were a couple schools considering him before the extension was signed. I don't believe they were in a power 5 conference though. Outside of the buyout, at that time, it was the right move. It's easy for some to look back now and say that was a poor choice, or even not the best choice, but it really was a good move based on the results of that time. It had even been discussed here that the constant turnover of coaches, including the head coach was a factor in IU's problems.

IndyStar references it, but I do remember when his name was being thrown around for Florida State.  This was a concern given his historical Florida HS connections.

Allen's buyout is $30 million through December 1st 2024 and then it drops to $15 million. IU may not win another game this season and then it becomes decision time for the AD. Do you really want to keep Allen for the 2023 AND 2024 season just to save $15 million? I just don't see how IU can afford to keep Allen for two more years until his buyout decreases.

it's interesting as what starts out as being a deterrent for other schools to come in and "get your guy", becomes a possible deterrent to your own program in making a move.....
