What percent of coaches have seen half the teams they are seeding/qualifying let alone the entire field? High school football coaches don't have that luxury.

Also there's a ton less bias in computer rankings such as Sagarin as compared to the human element.

    Not the entire field

seed sectionals.  Coaches of that sectional seed each other.  Regionals and beyond can stay with the same format.

4-8 HCs can figure it out…at the least they could put the best 2 teams on opposite sides even if there is disagreement over who is #1

Not to mention there are probably more Catholics on GS team (or HH for that matter) than Chatard's.....sorry, couldn't pass on that one, all the Chatard folks don't get too wadded up...

Everybody wants Bama, until they get Bama.  We have had a bunch of close heartbreakers with Chatard over the years and just one win.  Frankly, it doesn't bother me at all when they are in 4A, makes 3A more interesting.  Be careful what you wish for.  Playing Chatard in the regular season and the postseason are 2 different animals.

I think it’s more that GS is now at a point where they want to play in big time games against tough opponents.  Even Coach Hart has talked about it this year.  The players love the big games against great teams where everyone is watching.

In the summer they are going to 7on7s vs teams all across the Midwest and sometimes SEC country when they played in the National 7on7 in Alabama…state champion teams throughout all of it.

Brownsburg is the team camp every year.

The out of conference schedule is made up of the toughest teams they can schedule

I think I just saw that the freshman team beat Franklin central? Not a powerhouse but they are 6A I believe.  The middle school teams travel to Knoxville for their national tournament during the summer.

like….every step of the way the program is trying to play the best teams they can and win…and they do win. I just don’t see the problem.  Literally from top to bottom in season and during the offseason…Hart is putting GS in a position to be challenged and the players have accepted the challenge.

plus…hey…if I get my wish of facing Chatard, that means GS took care of business and has won 5 playoff games and is playing in LOS….so I would be very happy with that lol

Maybe playing a tougher schedule better prepares a team to handle adversity, whether it be the opponent or bad weather. What is that line I see on here sometimes about ifs and buts being my aunt's candies and nuts and my uncle having a wonderful Christmas?

Please explain to everyone how playing a tougher schedule prepares you for a 15° game with winds and sleet coming down 😂

the game is commonly referred to on here as the ice bowl

but sure I bet if GS scheduled someone from Evansville during that time they would have been properly prepared lmao

Here was a guy from Lowell about 20 years ago, had a set of truck air horns rigged to a portable air tank.

Now that would be a sight to see during a game lol.

when I was in high school some 10 years ago one of my classmates got his hands on a train horn and put an air compressor in the back of his truck.

needless to say, everyone heard him at 7:45am in the parking lot

So are not conceding on 4 downs not turnovers? Because they didn’t convert on 4th down 3-4 times in that game. My step son helped shut down there RB Justin Marshall we held him To the lowest total in his high school football career I believe

I don’t have a dog in this or really an opinion about any of these teams

but I do not count turnover on downs as turnovers.  In HS we see too often how a team gets to the 40/35/30 yard line but they don’t have a kicker who can hit 40 yards and it would be pointless to punt…so they have to go for it on 4th down.

still a major play for the games trying to convert it but I wouldn’t talk about a team having 6 turnovers when 4 were just failed conversions ya know?

I know there are some restrictions for noisemakers when we reach Sectional time. What are the restrictions for regular season? Is it IHSAA sanctioned? Is it up to the host school? Your opinion please!

I believe noisemakers are allowed at games it just can’t be airhorns or anything that is “automated” if you will

from my understanding, cowbells (need more 😉) and stuff are allowed

edit: I think I recall that only the state championship game has different rules.

I agree it would be great to make these games really exciting. That being said in reality the reason why States like Ohio and Texas have a qualify tournament isn't really to make football better and more exciting although that is the bi-product of having the qualify. The true reason these states have a qualifying format playoff instead of a post season tournament is because the have so many schools playing football they have to have a qualifying format. In all honesty Indiana with 330 football playing schools that is a lower number that can do an all in format. Ohio and Texas don't have that luxury. While I personally think a Qualifying playoff format would be great I think anyone would have a difficult time getting the IHSAA to do that.

Well, 2 people want change, neither of whom are affiliated with the athletic department of an Indiana High School. If the schools themselves want change, they should petition the IHSAA and put it to a vote among member schools.

Yeah I know I have no influence.  And at this point I’m not going to argue tooth and nail for it….it makes little difference.

i do think however that if we just continue to talk about it and get more people onto the idea that eventually it’s going to happen.

fans push the topic…the media takes up the topic and presses coaches about it…coaches eventually push to make the change…oh wait….ihsaa denies motion 😂

Agree with everything you said.  I think higher strength of schedule is definitely a benefit in a vacuum.  Playing better competition and having to win tough games will help you when you get in that situation during the playoffs, all else equal.

But I think you also run the risk of more injuries and you may come out of it worse than when you started, especially for 3A schools who don't have the same depth as 5/6A schools.  I know Chatard has several starters out right now, although not sure for how long, but that could prove to be a negative of playing the schedule they did.

But at the end of the day, it's about the dudes, like you said.  If you've got the dudes, it doesn't really matter who you've played. 2015 GS team is a perfect example.  They had the dudes and Chatard's strength of schedule would have made no difference.  The only thing that could have stopped that team from beating Chatard was an act of God, which is why I'm grateful we are a Catholic school (only kidding, tons of respect of GS and know that outcome would have been different).

I jokingly think back to then and question how God was on your side when the 2015 team had a QB who was committed to going to seminary school in Rome and the team got in trouble for praying on the field after games lol

Father might not play favorites but Mother Nature sure does 😂😉

in all seriousness…I would love to see Chatard and GS schedule each other in the regular season.  It’s been 7 years of wanting to get a rematch with Chatard but no dice.  Maybe if we are lucky both teams can get 5 more wins in a row over the next month.

This is a worthwhile effort that, I hope, will drive a stake through the heart of this myth once and for all. I am in lockstep with @Footballking16’s thinking on this issue. But while he is no doubt right in his conclusion, I place more emphasis on what such a qualifying format would do for the regular season. By raising the stakes for many, many regular season games, the whole season becomes more competitive. The level of interest and the caliber of play would rise accordingly. Better for everyone.

    Agreed

all in format is good for Indiana with only like 330 teams…would just be great to see the regular season mean something for everyone.

maybe it’s just my opinion….but for many conferences we already have an idea who are the favorites, and often, it takes an undefeated conference effort to win the conference.

i genuinely feel like there are a number of teams who take their foot off the gas a little once they get a conference loss or two.  And some of those teams could definitely finish the year at like 7-2/6-3 and make a good run…but I think they often finish out somewhere around 4-5/5-4 because they lose a bit of an edge.

i just have to agree that if we seeded maybe we would see some of these teams pushing themselves more because they know 1 more win could mean being on the opposite side of the bracket….and imo once you get to a trophy game in week 12 and beyond…it’s anyones ball game.

    For additional comparison,

Guerin is 23 State and 1147 National

Chatard is 17 State and 293 National

Western Boone is 108 State and 5104 National

Lawrenceburg is 122 State and 5906 National

Norwell is 133 State and 6185 National

Other than the two Catholic school outliers (whose SoS benefits from playing both playing each other, Roncalli and Brebeuf. Chatard also played Cathedral, Cincinnati Elder #4 D1 school in Ohio and Christian Brother’s Academy #2 6A school in MO. Guerin also played East Central) the top 8 seem to be pretty evenly matched in their opponents strength.

Chatard certainly plays an incredibly tough schedule…I just don’t know if I really take that much away from it.

i mean…in 2015 a Chatard team that won 3A state going 12-3 was nearly beat by Gibson Southern.  If not for the ice that caused like 9 turnovers for GS that game, Chatard would have lost to a team who played an SOS that wasn’t even in the top 200 of the state.

SoS matters and it doesn’t.  GS certainly has spent the last 4 years trying to improve their schedule and it has showed…but at the same time sometimes teams just have the dudes and it doesn’t matter who they played.

i think Owen Valley has a chance to be that team.  Very balanced very dominant….lots of seniors.  They have a tough path of course but they certainly are a team where you can’t just dismiss them because of their SoS

This close (actually this was the 2012 OT game):

Got a soft spot here for the 2012 team.  Such a crazy run my senior year (not that I did anything other than watch from the sidelines)

besides the magic of that year….what always got me about the old photos/being there for it were the helmets in that first season lol.

coach hart wanted a new look to help with the fresh start and that’s when the white helmets came about….but that first year most of the helmets were the old maroon ones but painted white.

by the end of the season you could tell who on the defense was always bringing the heat because their helmets would be mostly white but the paint was chipping away and the maroon would show through….or in this case it was mostly maroon with a little bit of white left  😂

this might have continued on into 2013 but I’m not entirely sure when GS sold enough titans cards/game day tickets to afford new helmets

  12. This is going to be a fun game

on one hand you have Gibson Southern who is heavily favored

on the other you have a VL team who has been up and down but ultimately has shown they can play with anyone in the area

GS knows VL and the SIAC would love nothing more than to spoil it all….and the SIAC guys would love to hold it over our heads how a 5th place SIAC team beat the #1 PAC team.

GS has to come out and show they are the better team.  Boonville probably was just the right amount of humble pie GS needed to get fired up before playoffs.

no score prediction yet…but GS will definitely want to start this game strong and set their tempo.  Can’t let a team as good as VL hang around otherwise we could be looking at 2016 all over again

  13. I’m just saying….it’s so bad with the packers this year that all of my coworkers are showing up on time on mondays.

every year we have what is called “Packer flu” where guys call in or are late on mondays because they were at the bars watching the packer game….nope not this year lol  they are on time and not calling in.  Nothing to drink to except misery

Not ranked.  One of about 5/6 teams I considered that narrowly missed the top 50.

Fair.  They have a path to Semi State in 3A and certainly have the defense to beat anyone in their regional.

also one of those things where if things go just right, Gibson Southern and Southridge could meet at Semi State for a rematch

    Pretty Impressive Group!

Any state champions among this group to finish the season with an undefeated state title?

    What say you?

as always, the game is better

    from_the_sidelines007

I think Gibson Southern has a good chance to go 14-0 and make it to LOS but who knows they could also be 9-1/10-1 and sitting home in October.  Vincennes is no joke and Owen Valley is probably waiting in round 2

West Lafayette certainly has a chance

New Pal feels like they should be a lock but they have a gauntlet of phenomenal teams to get by first.  Roncalli and probably Reitz stand in their way to 15-0

I really like Linton this year.  Gut feeling they go 15-0

I don’t think HSE or the other two in 6A go undefeated.  I don’t know how the bracket lines up for 6A but I think Cathedral is going to win it all this year

  16. 11 hours ago, Titan32 said:

Reitz should be one spot above or below GS.  I also think a full strength Memorial isn’t far off from those two.

    That’s where I’m at.

It’s 1A/1B with GS getting the slight nod since it’s been 20 straight victories.

but it’s a fun game to think about that won’t happen this year.

  17. Went through and looked at the play by play on digital scout and found this pretty interesting

    -Boonville ran 39 plays

-the first 2 plays went for 174 yards and 2TDs

-Kyle Sokeland reported that the next 37 plays went for 155 yards total.

-of those 37 plays….10 of them were either a sack or TFL. Another 8 were either a run for no gain or incomplete pass.

    - 18/37 ≈ 49%….so basically after the first 2 plays, it was a 50/50 chance than Boonville had a positive play…and that’s without factoring in penalties/turnovers/fumbles.

it was certainly a great start for Boonville but looking deeper into it….titans defense pulled it together quickly and went back to doing what they have been doing all year.

GS is on another level in developing 1 way players in the PAC. Being a part of a winning program is commendable. 2 platooning at any level requires depth. GS has that. The best player on the field was Boonville’s Clay Conner. Never left the field O, D or special teams. Several tackles, INT, 90 yd run for TD.
24-21 had it interesting in the 2nd half. Boonville wore down end of 2nd and the 4th.
    GS PAC Big Champs. 🏆

I feel like the playing 2 ways thing is a little overblown sometimes.  GS does have players playing both ways at times…I mean Delong has been playing in all 3 phases of the game all year just like his older brothers did

Tbh….I don’t understand how other teams can have 50+ kids on the team but still start 6 of them on both sides.

It’s one thing when you have a talented kid who rises above the rest and earns other roles because of how great they are…and it’s something else when players don’t step up and coaches are forced to play the same handful of kids both ways because that handful of kids are the only ones giving their best effort

This game was, uh, interesting to watch. BV scored 14 points and had a kajillion and seven rushing yard average in, like, 3.9 nanoseconds. And and then... basically nothing. Spurts here and there. Admittedly, my butt was starting to get puckered tighter than a snare drum after that second one. But the boys appeared more or less unphased. They came out the next drive, buckled down, and TCOB from 3.9 nanoseconds on.

Whatever game plan BV had on those first two plays 👏 👏 👏

Not sure what they had planned from third down on, but a top notch start.

I saw on Twitter that after the first 2 plays for Boonville, they were held to 155 yards the rest of the game.

I feel like this year there has been a number of games where the opposing team scores first and it’s a good battle in the first half…then the 2nd half comes and GS has made all the right adjustments and the players just take it to another level.
