Glad he chose football! He was a lot of fun to watch during GS's run last year.

How is he doing at Purdue? I know he's redshirting, but what's the QB room look like outside of the current starter? I always love seeing Indiana kids to have success at the next level.

It’s looking like he will be fighting for the starting spot with a kid named Michael Alaimo next year…I think Alaimo is a redshirt junior next year.

i would have to believe that he is favored currently because next year will be year 4 for Alaimo and he hasn’t been on the field much at all the last 3 years despite the QB room having many opportunities to move up.

That’s about as much as I know though.  Still has to go out there and earn the job…and then he has to keep the job.  I’m sure he’s up for that task though

@TheDoctor22 Sometimes taking the bait is the only way to break the fisherman’s line, steal his favorite bait and ruin his day. Why be a minnow when you can be a large  mouth?

Seems to me that the gap has narrowed for that mystery team that is lucky enough to “dominate a lower class”. I guess if a team isn’t smart enough to “maximize it’s advantages” it deserves what it gets. Just curious why GS didn’t make their 5star QB (a generational talent at this level for sure) play WR last year just to keep it fair? Oh, maybe because GS “maximized it’s advantages”. That seems really unfair. Maybe you should do the honorable thing and give last year's State Title to a more deserving “team”.  On second thought, the idea of not maximizing advantages within the framework of the rules just sounds dumb, doesn’t it?

I know there is seriousness to this…but…if Brady Allen didn’t play QB he would have played basketball and would have been a top recruit there. Don’t think there was a chance he would have played WR.

Coming in as a freshman, I believe he was a blue chip prospect for basketball but ultimately chose to focus on football.  Obviously it worked out well for him.  But imo, if he wasn’t playing QB, he would have played basketball.

So what…Coach Hart coached in Alaska and he could see Russia from his house!

I know you’re joking here but on a tangent here, didn’t coach hart win a state title with Reitz, go to Western Ky and then was the OC for Warren Central when they won a state title in like 2009 or something?

Coach Gibson has a nice resume himself getting to where he is but now I’m trying to remember Coach Harts.  I just remember sitting in the gymnasium 11 or so years ago and Principle Adams (then AD) was giving us a list of his accomplishments before introducing Hart as the new HC.

figure there is no better time to ask this question than now when the topic is being discussed haha

That was a nice interview.  I really liked Coach Gibsons comment saying (paraphrased)

“anyone who says this is just another game doesn’t know championship football. It’s not just another game…you have to earn it all year to get a game like this and you have to play championship football to win these games”

just watching this interview shows that OV is coming in looking for a brawl and expecting to win.  Neither team is overlooking the other…Seems like the OV community has bought in completely so it’s going to be an absolutely packed house knowing GS fans are going to show up in numbers too.

Hard for them when up until this year or last every MSC only had 1 non conference game. Clarksville going independent has helped alot of those schools in scheduling but some are just having that contract about to expire. See what Charlestown does once that is done. I do agree with you and they do. I feel Silver Creek has made most of their Non conference adding Floyd and Jeff.

I just know that MSC while it doesn’t have a favorable record vs the PAC….they sure do give the PAC good games with great teams…and if they can just find a way to be better than their PAC opponents they could easily find themselves at LOS.

i think the PAC has had 3 different teams in the last 5 years make it to the state finals…2 championships with 5 trips to semi state? So the idea is if they can beat the PAC they can make it to the state championship

I think it’s pretty cool that OV has been producing media like this all year.  I’ve seen it on Twitter and Facebook on multiple pages.

sure it’s nothing too crazy but I just like that a school/program is doing something small for extra media.

kinda miss that with GS from last year.  Last year GS had an amazing broadcast going and the guy doing it would dub over highlights with his radio call for special moments like when Brady Allen became the all time passing TDs leader for Indiana or when the clock hit zero vs Tri west and he was saying “pack your bags, your Gibson southern titans are going to the state championship”

just little stuff like this I think can really show how much a community cares about their team.

Curious as to who is Gibson Southern’s biggest competition on their side of the bracket?  Seems the left side of the bracket should be very entertaining with Chatard, WL, Guerin and Norwell. Will GS be challenged at all on their side?

I think you are new here but this is just how 3A is and why it’s so fun to follow.  Lots of great teams and lots of great games.  Every year there are plenty of 3A teams who would do very well in 4A or even 5A sometimes and come playoff time it gets wild.

lately the state championship games for 3A have been some absolute thrillers. West Lafayette vs Memorial a few years back probably highlights these and might have been one of the best championship games of all time

Hunt (QB) and Johnson (RB) for Vincennes started last year, but suffered season ending injuries in Week 1 or Week 2.  That is a huge difference between the 2021 and 2022 version of the Alices.

Yeah those two definitely would make a world of difference.  They will be fun to follow next year…and probably a little bit scary come playoffs…hopefully the bracket is divided nicely and we don’t see a VL/OV or VL/GS before week 12 again

    HH wins.  Strength of schedule.

I didn’t think there was that much difference but maxpreps/sagarin/massey all favor HH schedule by a lot more over Charlestown

what I never understood…Charlestown is not far from Louisville and Cincy….and yet they don’t bother with games from those metros

idk maybe I’m talking out of my rear but I feel like Charlestown is a program that is routinely pretty good but they could take it another step if they did something with their schedule.  Same with Btown central

  10. The shuffling of 3A on this list has been fun to follow all year.

some weeks it’s Chatard GS WL

next week it’s GS WL Chatard.

im kinda eager to see how these 3A teams handle tomorrow and going forward…but like the rankings here have reflected…no clear favorite and it changes week to week just based on their performances

Owen Valley shut out VL last year. 😆 literally zero points scored against their defense.  GS will run off with this one, I agree, but, I do not believe you have the pedigree to be calling yourself the second best team. 4 wins against an obviously down year in the SIAC and 0 points against the defense you say needs to have the game of their life. OV's offense is much improved from a year ago. Still not enough to win against a team of this caliber. But I truly believe there are only 4 or 5 teams in 3A who could consistently beat OV if they played 10 times. VL is surely not one of those teams.

To be fair to Vincennes…last years team would have been smoked by this years VL team I think.  Their record of 4-6 really doesn’t do them any justice….and with the pieces they are returning they are expected to be a contender for the SIAC next year

I'm not entirely sure the IHSAA requires a rights fee to broadcast a sectional game. I say that only because our Sectional game on Indiana SRN was free (just like regular season), as were the 3-4 other games I watched over the weekend. I would expect SRN to charge something if they were being charged by the IHSAA. Maybe they have a blanket license with the IHSAA or something?

Hah!! You guys could actually make a killing streaming games from sponsors. Last time I listened to Coach Hart's radio show there were so many sponsors it took the first 5 minutes to read them. And think of it, if you charged $10 to watch you'd probably get $100 a week from @DumfriesYMCA alone...

    lol Maybe!

tbh…I kinda enjoy the radio broadcast.  I’m younger than most of you guys but I genuinely enjoy listening to a good game on the radio.

Friday nights I have my headphones in doing housework or whatever.  Wife seems to like it too lol me cleaning and being quiet 😂

This post and all of the others arguing for who should have won that year is a great example of why we should have a Mr Football for each class.

If we are just talking about D Bell and Kiser and not including Romeir Elliot (whose stats were insane his senior year), not to take away from Kiser bc I believe being on a 1A team he had the opportunity and also was probably needed to play all of those positions and he excelled at them. But would that have been necessary if he played 6A or better yet, the MIC? I believe he still would have been a stud at one or two positions and a Mr Football candidate, but he would not have had to be called on, most likely, to do more than one (depending on the school.) He was a 6A athlete on a 1A team.

The same goes for Bell. He was an amazing WR, 4 year starter at Warren, and also probably the best DB his junior and senior year. Also an amazing special teams player. How good would he have been on a 1A team? See what I am saying. We can have this argument all day long, but at the end of the day it is merely our opinions because we don't know unless they reversed roles. Both kids were special HS players and it could have gone either way with either of them winning Mr Football.

Let me include that both kids are amazing and outstanding people and huge inspirations to their communities.

I think I would be okay with mr football for every class.  But I don’t want it to just be whoever makes it to state at the lower levels like the mental attitude award is for.

for the most part though…I really only see 6A fans complaining about who won on a year….it really bugs the 6A fans when a small school player wins it from my perspective.

  14. 47 minutes ago, Whiting89 said:

Bell has been and always will be better than Kiser end of story

Mr football is possible for any football player 1A-6A

you can argue about who the better player is but I don’t think there has been or will be another player with the credentials that Jack Kiser had.

    56-2 over 4 years as a starter

He led his entire team in Passing, Rushing, Return Yards, Tackles, INTs FOR 3 STRAIGHT YEARS.

The kid literally did everything including the kicking/punting for his team and he put up ridiculous numbers doing so.

He won Mr Football and was deserving of it.  Never left the field and was the darling of his community…absolutely amazing role model and stand up citizen off the field.

We can stop talking about how someone else should have won it over him because he was the embodiment of what everyone wants out of a star football player and was “Mr Football” more than anyone.  The kid literally played QB, RB, WR, DE, LB, SS, K, P and was great at all of them. The most Position-less player this state has probably ever seen

I say all of this knowing I have David bell on every single one of my fantasy teams and love watching him play to death.  But let’s stop disrespecting Jack Kiser just because he played 1A in HS and isnt in the nfl currently.

  15. I’m just saying….if you believe that David bell being in the nfl is an argument for why he should have won mr football….you’re a full blown idiot.

the award is about their high school performance and their representation of Indiana football….it includes statistical accomplishments over a season and a career….but it has absolutely nothing to do with the number of stars a player has on their recruiting profile nor does it have anything to do with their nfl potential.

it’s honestly irritating reading these comments because it’s hindsight BS with zero to no logic other than you can read a 247/rivals report….congrats

  16. Floyd Central at North [-14.5]
    Castle at New Albany [+28.5]
    Jasper at Memorial [+7.5]
    Reitz at Boonville [+15.5]
Gibson Southern at Owen Valley [+12.5]
West Vigo at Pike Central [-6.5]
    Corydon at Southridge [-35.5]
    Heritage Hills at Charlestown [+3.5]
    North Posey at Paoli [+13.5]
Mater Dei at Tell City [+31.5]

let’s go pike central! Regardless of how any of these go. I just want to see Pike Central win and build something so that next year they can break their historical performance trend.

with a win maybe they carry momentum and they are a solid .500 next year and can keep building on that

You have to love the beauty of our non-conference schedule.

I definitely do.  I’m really excited for that Mt Carmel game.  It’s wild to me that GS and Mt Carmel have never played despite being like 15 miles apart.

if GS doesn’t keep South Warren there are a number of schools I would like to see GS play.  Always fun facing new teams and schemes

  18. Speaking of schedules though…does anyone know about anything with Gibson Southerns schedule next year?

i know Terre Haute South will be week 1 on their 2nd year of the contract.

Week 2 will now be Mt Carmel Illinois since the 2 year deal with New Albany expired

then there is week 4 with South Warren KY.  I thought that was a 2 year contract too but I have not seen anything about renewing them or finding another team to play.

Dont really have a preference at all…I like GS facing new opponents like Mt Carmel and I also like GS keeping strong opponents like Southridge.

Owen Valley was 1-9 just 3 years ago and 0-10 just 4 years ago. I think their current schedule is a reflection of what they were. I heard the new HC at OV Robbie Gibson has already told the administration that he wants Cloverdale and Eastern Green off the schedule and they honored it. He is trying to beef up the non-conference schedule.

That is an insane turnaround under Coach Gibson.

and honestly…the more that we get into it on this thread…there are so many similarities between these programs….I kinda feel like OV is like the GS teams from 2013/2014….small program with new coach finding his groove…currently playing a lower SoS but wanting to change that and just keep challenging his players.

outside of OV running a little bit of wishbone both teams run similar offenses.

  20. 1 hour ago, Sidelined56 said:

    For purpose of argument here...

"IF" OV can drive the ball and sustain drives, does that slow the game down and work to their advantage?

GS high octane offense scores before one can blink but does a long offensive drive by OV stiffen up the GS offense?

or is it nearly impossible for OV to sustain a long drive against the stout GS defense? If OV goes tempo, do they allow time for GS defense to get set so broken long 50+ yard runs don't happen ?

It’s not impossible…just requires discipline and being able to convert 3rd and long when you need to.

the problem for teams is really GS’s DL.  You could get 2 positive gains and be sitting at 3rd and 4….and then you go for a pass play and damn near instantly the QB has a guy wrapping him up for a sack forcing the punt. If it’s not that then it seems like the DL puts the team in a great spot with minimal or negative rushing yards and then it’s 3rd and long…and again forcing pressure which leads to bad throws and turnovers.

they are not world beaters by any means…but teams have struggled to find consistency against the defense.

which to be completely fair…Owen Valley has certainly showed that they have the kind of offense that can consistently move up the field and they can also hit the big plays and score quickly.  So they will need to just find a way to keep doing what they do best.
