That’s inconsistent to everything I have heard in the past from the lacrosse community going back almost 20 years. Could you elaborate?
It isn’t any direct knowledge I have, but it is what was shared by the IHSAA commissioner.

Well that's all squared away along with announcing girls wrestling and boys volleyball. Have to think boys & girls lacrosse will be next in line.
The lacrosse coaches do not have an interest in becoming an official IHSAA sport.

Stacey Brewer, the principal at Yorktown, submitted a proposal to address the change that has been made to the one-game regional and two-game semistate and how it relates to the tournament success factor.
As it stands, if a school is moved up a class via the tournament success factor, it must earn three points (a regional championship is worth two points, a sectional one) during a two-year period to stay up (that was changed from two points last year). Under Brewer’s proposal, another point would be added, meaning a school would have to accumulate four points during a two-year period to remain up a class.
The straw poll at Plainfield showed just 15 in favor and 52 opposed to that change. (my emphasis)
Thoughts? The 1 Game Regional, 2 Game Semistate, comment applies to basketball only? Doesn't look like it got much traction, but seems to be a desire by some to make it "harder" for teams to "stay up"?
Brewer has proposed this rule before, and continues to propose it because Yorktown volleyball can’t win state in 4A. The entire reason for this is so their volleyball team can get moved back to 3A and win state again. Fortunately, it doesn’t look like the proposal is getting much support. Similar results to the polling occurred at other spring principals meetings.
In my opinion, the point total to stay up was appropriate at 2 points per cycle. If your team is good enough to win 2 sectionals or 1 regional in a class above your enrollment, you are good enough to stay up. The change that was made for this year was not necessary in my opinion. It was proposed by Jeff Doyle from Barr-Reeve, who is an executive committee member, and was again motivated by a successful volleyball program. The position on the executive committee should be a good indication of how it got approved.

Has that actually happened where 3-4 schools dropped football or closed in a given year or two?
Yes. In the 2 year cycle of 22-23 and 23-24, there were actually 6 schools included in the 1A alignment which did not compete in the 1A tournament during the 2nd year of the cycle. Traders Point Christian, Anderson Prep Academy, Rock Creek Academy, Oldenburg Academy, Indiana Deaf, and Dugger Union did not compete in the tournament. So if 1A had started with 32 in this cycle, the tournament this year would have included 26 teams. Sectionals would start with 4 teams in each, so if one or two teams drop from the tournament, you end up with a 1 game sectional. Indianapolis Tindley could have won a sectional without playing a single game. Looking at who the 32 smallest schools were, it is very possible that a sectional would have included Traders Point, Indiana Deaf, Tindley, and Anderson Prep. That would be the definition of a participation trophy.
On 3/12/2024 at 10:35 AM, JQWL said:I believe what he is saying is that less than 32 teams would devalue a championship. 5A and 6A have 32 currently and have a much less of a chance at shutting down a program before the season begins or not being able to finish because of injury. 1A could begin with 32 and be at 28 by the end of a two year cycle. I know a few years ago (2021?) we had at least two 1A schools shut the program down right before the season began. It's not a ridiculous thing to consider.
Correct, that was my point, as further illustrated with my example above.
On 3/12/2024 at 9:08 AM, CoachMack219 said:If this is a legitimate concern, we could just utilize our brain power (decision makers) and write a clause or bylaw into the classification rules that would allow 1A to be corrected/ adjusted to always have 32 teams, given extreme circumstances such as "teams in 1A drop football or close all together in a 2 year cycle, (list other reasons), or otherwise." I was even kind enough to begin drafting the clause for 'em! Lol
I'll be honest, one of my primary reasons for supporting 1A having 32 teams as opposed to 5A is the health and safety of the 1A players. Do we truthfully believe that it's "more grueling" for 5A schools with rosters of anywhere from 50-100 guys to go through their season than it is for 15-35 guys on 1A rosters, most of whom are playing all 3 ways? Let's give those 1A guys the extra week to get healthy before the postseason. Valpo, Merrillville, Whiteland, Decatur Central, and the like will manage just fine without a Bye, in my opinion.
Doing this would result in a mid-cycle change of classification for schools. There is already the potential for mid-cycle moves due to success factor (see Dwenger last season and the 3 team sectional that resulted), so the IHSAA might as well just realign the sectionals every year. The leadership group already hates doing it every 2 years, so I don’t think they want to do something that increases the need to realign more often. I do agree with the extra time for smaller schools to recover, but I think that can be accomplished by giving smaller schools the option to play an 8-game regular season.

How much value is there in a 1A state championship after 3-4 teams in the class drop football or close all together in a 2 year cycle? That is my primary reason for opposing 1A having only 32 schools.

In the past, the classifications and sectional alignments have been released after the conclusion of the winter sports season. That way success factor moves for all but the spring sports can be included.

Hypothetical scenario for you. If Conference Indiana ever falls apart as it has been rumored for the past few years, could you see a scenario where the Sagamore grabs the two Terre Haute schools? I know that’s a two hour drive from Lafayette but the overall travel for them would still be shorter per season in a Sagamore with the Terre Haute schools than in the NCC.
Possibly. It would be a tough sell for the Terre Haute schools. They would be a competitive fit in most sports but the distance to Terre Haute is a significant obstacle to membership in almost any conference.
When it was first announced that Harrison and McCutcheon were out of the NCC, I thought they could fit well in Conference Indiana. Adding those two schools would either save the conference or be the final step to kill it. Ignoring geography, it would have made some sense.
Southport 2368 Columbus North 2267 Harrison 2169 McCutcheon 1786 Bloomington South 1656 Terre Haute South 1609 Bloomington North 1558 Terre Haute North 1467 I think Southport wants to be in the MIC, and maybe Columbus North goes with them to get in together. Columbus could join the Hoosier Hills instead if they can be in the same conference as Columbus East. Not sure what the Bloomington schools do. Maybe try to get into the Mid-State or Hoosier Hills. The Terre Haute schools would fill in the enrollment gap between the members of the Sagamore if they joined (along with West Lafayette).

ICC Small School- Triton Central, Lutheran, Scecina, Ritter, Covenant Christian
I don’t see it happening, but if it did, go a step further and make it 14 schools. Split them into private and public divisions with a crossover/playoff in week 9. That gives all teams a 7-game conference schedule and still leaves 2 weeks open for non-conference games.
ICC Private: Heritage Christian, Cardinal Ritter, Scecina, Park Tudor, Covenant Christian, Lutheran, Greenwood Christian
ICC Public: Beech Grove, Danville, Indian Creek, Tri-West, Speedway, Monrovia, Triton Central

Not a bad move given the circumstances and (lack of) options. Harrison has already played Tri-West in the undercard games, so there's some activity already there. Given about three additional slots to fill, it may provide some addition interest from others to round that out. Still provides Harrison the ability to pick up an additional five games out of conference right now which they will need to help them compete in their move to 6A. They will be facing West Lafayette this year for a third consecutive season and that has to be a benefit for both in terms of having an extra "home" game even if if they are away. They may still put Jeff on their schedule too, which both teams need, but frankly given that Jeff voted Harrison out of the NCC, I'd almost like to see Harrison find another 6A opponent to scratch that itch; especially if West Lafayette will be a continued opponent locally. Harrison also has Brebeuf this next season which is also a nice pick-up. Don't know if that's just going to be a home-and-home, but would be interesting to see if that evolves. Harrison has actually played several of the Catholic schools on undercards including Chatard and Cathedral as well as now getting Brebeuf and playing Roncalli in the past as a varsity fill-in game during COVID. Those schools aren't going to leave the Circle City, but as non-con games for Harrison, they would be nice matches.
I mentioned on another site that I could see West Lafayette entertaining the possibility of moving to the Sagamore to be a 6th member. Doing so would then put the Hoosier Conference at 8 members. West Side would still have room in their schedule to keep Central Catholic and at least 1 more rival from the Hoosier, plus potentially get Lafayette Jeff back on the schedule. They fit competitively in the Sagamore and the natural rivalries with Harrison and McCutcheon would make it worth considering a move. Here’s an example of what the opponents could look like for Harrison, McCutcheon, West Side, and Jeff. I listed non-conference opponents first, but these aren’t necessarily in order since this is definitely hypothetical.

I get that.. The way I read that was you were saying they are eligible this year. I wasn't sure if there was a special rule since a couple of those teams participated in 8 man before going to 11 man.
Honestly, I am not sure about the tournament eligibility for the teams that played a season of 8 man football. Since these schools have already been IHSAA members and competed in state tournaments in other sports, I am not sure what the bylaws state about their eligibility to play in the 11 man football tournament.

I may have missed something, but I thought Indianapolis Irvington, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, Lafayette Faith Christian had one more full season until they become tournament eligible? Unless the 8 man season counted for them... I know GCA is eligible for the tournament this year.
Even if those schools have another season before they are eligible, they need to be included in the alignments since they will be eligible for the second year of the cycle.
