  1. How many seniors do the Senators have this year? They have had such an emotional ride. I have nothing but love for both programs... PC and WW.... met a lot of great folks over the years with Linton games and just chitter chatter year in and out. I'd love to see either go far in the tourney.... It feels like this is West Washington's time to shine though. But this is the kind of game that is dangerous. PC is an opponent that certainly knows what you do.. your personnel... and vice versa. Having beaten the Commodores four times in a row... well you hope they aren't looking ahead. Can't imagine they would... but... it is the post season! Congrats to Coach Nance on an unbeaten season.. and to Coach Gibson for getting Perry Central back to where they are.
  2. I think injuries would still be of concern.. particularly with a kid who is very talented. I would think the numbers would help in having that pool to replace an injured player. I'm sure there are 2nd teamers at MD who could start at other 2A schools. Where as in Linton it's not unusual at all to have sophomores and on occasion a freshman start simply because there aren't numbers... not saying they aren't very good freshmen or sophomores. In fact I see 3 sophs starting on Offense at MD.... like Linton...both QBs are sophs. Both teams have a soph starting on Defense as well.
  3. I definitely see this argument. If you are a kid thinking he has a legit shot at a D1 scholarship... and that's his/her total focus... I do think you would be looking at bigger schools because of the spotlight and because the success and state wide attention Memorial, Central, Reitz (normally!), Castle and North to an extent of late. I can definitely see the historical factor with families long ties with Mater Dei. I have no doubt at all the educational side and learning environment are top notch.
  4. Oh indeed.. that basketball sectional at Switz City Central was THE place to be.. for a variety of reasons as a kid!! I played Worthington, L&M, Central... of course Shakamak, Eastern Greene and Bloomfield as Miner basketball player. and many other schools no longer on the map. Linton was always the only Football school til Eastern kicked in I think in 2003? Jasonville had a team of course.. the Yellow Jackets... way back.. supposedly had the first night game?? they tried to revive it a few years back with a community team... but didn't take. Bloomfield had a solid backing of football from a contigent... even to the point of someone going to finance the cost of equipment etc... .but it got snuffed quickly by school board and admin. WRV as well...but I don't think it really ever had a chance just on the numbers alone. So yeah...if you are a kid who loves playing football, and has the parental support to do so....you made the decision to drive the 5-8 miles and go to Linton. The Dugger situation was that the school shut down... kids were supposed to go to Farmersburg (North Central)... but more had no desire. They were physically closer to Shakamak, Sullivan, North Knox and especially Linton... just a couple miles east. Yeah Dugger became a charter school.. and continued football... but on a much smaller level. I knew all those L&M kids...played against them as well. I knew Clyde Hostettor as well!
  5. I agree with this statement 100%. I have great respect for what Coach Goebel has done and continues to do in this freaking society we have today. One thing I know in watching Mater Dei is the discipline they exhibit. The things they are taught to do.. they do. It isn't a "Me" attitude. I recall watching video last year of plays Linton would run that would catch a defender out of position, or going for the ball etc... that were stuffed by MD because the kid knew his role. stood his spot... didn't bite. I also want to say.. I realize Evansville is competitive... I realize there's Memorial, Reitz... certainly North and Central in that mix.
  6. As for the game itself.... I can only hope Linton gets off to a hella better start than last year. I hadn't even gotten my pen pushed on to write up in the radio booth when it was 7-0. In all my years doing Linton radio... back to 2000.. .and honestly just in all my years in school or since... I never saw a first quarter or half like that for my Miners! Just for a refresher course--- 1st play from scrimmage Goodman looks to pass from our own 20.. rolls right looking for Dyer... but Kyle Davidson jumps up to tip the pass in the air... down into Nolan Knights hands... and he trots in for 6 just 8 seconds in. THere was a 61 yard punt return (Kappenbrock), and blocked punt (Davidson) for a safety, A Miner fumble at our own 31 led to a McGrew TD... just offensively we were unable to do really anything. One big play-- Dyer ran for 30 yards, then Goodman for 12 and we were at the MD 39 on our 2nd possession... but Lannan coughed up the ball on the next play... Knight again making a play. This was really a 44-0 game as Linton scored twice in the last 6 minutes... and actually on the last play of the game. When you look at the game totals MD had 254 total offense, Linton 240. Miners with 148 rushing, 7 of 21 for 92 passing but 2 interceptions thrown. the Wildcats 191 rushing, 8 of 12 passing for 63 yards. Cole Happe had several key QB keeps backside that we didn't cover... he ended up with 75 yards and 2 scores. Lannan closed out his career defensively with 15 tackles. Knight and Davidson led MD with 6 each. 2018 was a mud fest in Linton that was 7 to 7 at the end of 1. Mater Dei punched two scores in the 2nd to take a 19-7 lead at the half. The passing of Happe was the big weapon in that first half hitting 10 of 21 for 147 yards and 2 TDs. There was also self-infliction happening for Linton. A fumble on a drive at the Mater Dei 29 in the opening quarter, then a huge lost fumble at the 4 minute mark of the 2nd giving MD the ball at the Miner 14 and a Happe TD run moments later. The 3rd quarter was all Wildcats. Linton had the ball for 1 series that quarter... a three and out. The Wildcats had it 3 times... all three scoring drives. 8 plays 52 yards, 5 plays 51... then a 10 play 68 yard drive with McGrew in just into the 4th quarter. Linton fumbled again in the MD Red zone at the 15 yard line as well. Mater Dei finished with 294 total offense, most in the air with Happe 16 of 29 for 226 3 tDs, but Linton picked 2. Boring and McGrew combined for 81 rush yards, but with losses the rush total was 68. Linton ended with 242 offense, 122 yards rushing from Luke Lannan and 2 TDs. Goodman was 4 of 17 for just 41 yards, the team as a whole was 6 of 19 for 98. Big games defensively for Lannan with 22 tackles, and Givens for MD with 10. So looking back at those two games... the over-all yardage isn't indicative of the final scores. Certainly the passing and running of Happe played big roles in both wins. It's also evident that fumbles on Linton's part did not help the Miners in the slightest! A couple if not three put the Wildcats at Linton's door for easy points. Last year we were down and out almost immediately. 2018 we hung in there for a bit, and had a chance to stay in the game and fumbled it away. But in the end, we couldn't stop the Passing game. This is my biggest worry going into Friday.
  7. Holding the MD roster in my hand... 75 names. Linton- 42. I only list this cause there is discussion about it. Truly Linton just has to suit up and match the discipline and talent that Mater Dei brings to the field. The biggest advantage to having that many players is depth and one-way starters. As I see... MD has 2 guys maybe 3 that go both offense and defense. I'm sure they rotate some guys now and then... but that's pretty nice to have just 8-9 going one way. They can be coached up while off the field, and certainly be 4-quarter ready. Linton has worked on getting as much depth as we can muster with 42 kids. And surprisingly appear to have just 5 two-way starters as this point, altho 8 of the offensive starters do play defense...just not at the same time. Unforunately that we lost a valuable linemen to injury at Tell City... and had another injury in the N.Posey game that hopefully will be good for Friday. Injuries are all part of football for sure.... St. James-3 Corpus Christi-10 St. Philip-19 WCS-11 St. John-1 Resurrection-12 St. Wendel-4 Holy Spirit-1 St. Joe-4 Holy Redeemer-9
  8. I know there are always a couple kids Linton picks up locally because we have football and there school does not in high school. I think that happens in rural communities where a kid loves football and his school doesn't offer it...and one nearby does. But it isn't a case of scouring the county in junior high looking for entice young kids to come to Linton for football purposes. THey aren't leaving football schools either.
  9. ahh such a shame... I mean.. I am dang happy to be playing... given that Washington forfeited to Sullivan because Edgewood players tested positive... But the atmosphere will be far from what it should be for the teams.. particularly for Linton being at home.
  10. well... for old times sake maybe.. I had to at least see if any discussion out there exists for two old rivalries. The Senators are 9-0... Commodores 8-3. They met earlier in Leopold with a 39-22 win for WW. This game is also at Leopold. Looking at the WW Season results it's hard to see where the Senators have been tested. the 22 points PC put on them is the most all season. What was this game like? Were they late points, or was this a competitive game? PC and my old friend Coach Gibson opened up with 2 losses (Tell City and Forest Park) but have truly been a defensive monster in their 8 wins... all 8 holding opponent under 10... and 5 of those shutouts. Beating 2A 7-4 Paoli 28-8 has prolly been their big win of the season. But those other 7 wins came against Opponents with a combined 9-49 W-L. Granted... WW has played and beaten many of the same teams on PC's schedule (North Central, Tecumseh, Springs Valley, Mitchell)... and add 0-9 Eastern Pekin. . They did beat Paoli 43-0 and easily over 5-6 Washington and 4-5 North Daviess. What say ye from the 1A south. .Sectional 48... PLAC folks?
  11. Those dang Commodores.. LOL... yeah we won that '97 game... but Perry Central ended our season in 1999 and 2000... but we got them in 2004 on our way to that loss to Ritter in semi-state.... but... those dang Commodores got us again in 2005 and 2006.... but we got'em in 2007. Ahhh but they got us again in 2010 but that was it. 2011 started a 5 year win streak for Linton over Perry Central in post-season that was dominated by the miners. 264-43 in scoring. It was definitely a changing of the guard.
  12. I think because of the "Orange" status in the county it automatically changes things at the school it terms of classes... some go virtual... but I'm not sure of how that all works out. Practices still happen... "school" is in session...
  13. Yeah I thought NK taking that opening drive down and scoring.. then being up 12-0 at home... man.. I really though the Warriors were set up for a big win. A couple big things for the Wildcats--- fake punt to convert a long 4th down.... and of course that huge 80+ Pierre TD when it look like he was going down for a short gain. But prolly the big one was that 4th n short in MD territory that NK did not get late in game. If they coulda drove that one in... we might be looking at a Linton NK rematch. Obviously Mater Dei made some adjustments along the way defensively or NK would have just driving down the field every possession. 23-19 is really how I look at that game.. more representative of how it went... and who knows if the Warriors had taken back the lead on that failed 4th down... and jumpe up 25-23, or 26-23, or with a 2 point play 27-23... if they coulda kept MD from scoring that 30th point. I thought NK did themselves proud.
  14. How many years has it been since we've met!!! I'm sure it was at Springs Valley... altho we exchanged emails quite a while!! HOpe all is well!
  15. No...I meant with Southridge out of 40. in 2a southridge is at very least always a fave
  16. I went back and looked through some of the Evansville paper write ups and some of the TV station recaps.... and saw Wunderlich for sure at QB in game 1. The Max Preps is messed up. I requested stats from MD... you can look at some early games and see big passing numbers but no QB listed.. or no passing stats entered... yet a list of receivers and their catches from the same game. Frustrating from a broadcaster pov.. .trying to get a good representation of the opponent.
  17. well hopefully our little radio broadcast will still reach in the land of video feeds! I honestly don't know where two video stream crews are gonna set up in our little booth at Linton along with our radio, visitor film, and home coaches all in that booth! Prolly wont know til Wednesday.... and based on what the state health dept 'colors' us. Orange last week meant only players, parents and cheerleaders...
  18. It reminds me of our time in 1A trying to get past perennial southern 1A kingpin Perry Central... they always ended out season, then we won and crossed that bridge. then we became the southern 1A dogs. I'll never forget a running clock at Perry in a post season game I just never thought I would ever see that happen in PC. Good to see they are back in the mix in 1A. But it also reminds me of the semi-state clashes with Ritter and Scecina.. and just never getting that big game. Now we sit in 2A... Both the Raiders and Wildcats have handled us these past years... we simply have to get to those standards to get to that level...
  19. _Yeah I will agree here. We (Linton that is)... really cannot go argue about strength of schedule, or who we've played or beat... Mater Dei will win all those conversations. They were 1-4 going into week 6. 3 point losses to 5A Castle...now playing in Sectional 15 Championship. and to Memorial...8-3 and playing for sectional 24 title.. against unbeaten Central, whom beat these Wildcats just 21-0. Yeah..I know.. 21-0 isn't great.. but it is considering Central's typical offensive output per week. The other loss was to 7-3 4A Jasper. Now....I am a die-hard Linton fan, but I think we'd prolly lose to those four. THey've run 6 in a row since the Jasper loss, most impressive being the first loss penned on 5A then undefeated EVansville North 21-13. Now I realize the Huskies had lost their QB... but still 29-14 means the offense moved the ball. Then it was the usual suspects--Bosse and Harrison before a big win over 4-7 Reitz. Really, since Southridge moved up due to success factor last year, the Wildcats had a relative ease reaching Regionals in 2019. LInton came in 9-1, winners of 9 in a row with a seasoned senior roster only to be down in 1 play, and smothered so quickly the game was all but over in the 1st quarter. It truly was a disappointing outing for those kids, and all Miner Fans who made that trip to a cold cold Reitz Bowl... And really from that moment on the Miner coaching staff has tried to prepare LInton to face Mater Dei. I agree again with South Paw... Linton cannot have turnovers...but worse yet, we cannot have self made turnovers---hand-off confusion that see the ball just there for the taking; forcing a pass into a pack trying to make something happen. We also cannot have passes put on the nose that are dropped, particularly in the open field! We can't have a 3rd and 2 become a 3rd and 7 on a false start; can't have a late hit out of bounds; and cannot have a blown coverage that leads to an easy Mater Dei passing TD. What we do have to see happen for Linton is the ability to run the ball. Last year they WIldcats dang near took some hand-offs out of Goodman's hands...and Lannan was hit several times just after getting the ball. Our offense... well anyone's offense, can't function with the opponent dominating up front. Goodman had no time to pass... we just were shut down offensively except for 1 or 2 plays. Turnovers and special teams destroyed LInton. More than one person, not of Linton loyalty, said post-game that Linton had actually done a decent job defensively.... but the offense has to be a factor. Gennicks at QB has a lot more mobility and deception being small, but being stronger that what he appears even as a sophomore. LInton has been good as of late against the run...really for the most part of the year. North Knox pounded Linton on the ground, and NK had some success pounding the ball against MD last week with Sheren at 207 himself... but the Wildcats have been in big plays... they play big games and big environments every week. The SIAC has that. Evansville isn't out in the sticks. We in Miner Land certainly have tried to make the schedule more challenging, but it's never going to equal what Mater Dei plays. Just how it is. I though NK came out strong... and at 12-0 at home... they had all the mo.... but MD isn't going to be rattled by such things. As said... 4 quarters. Going by MaxPreps.. which isn't updated with NK game yet... it does appear that there are multiple weapons.. but it sure looks like #25 Pierre has the bulk of the rushes and yards. 120 carries with the next highest at 23 (#10 Humphrey). Is that correct!?! THe passing is confusing too...the passing yards under the QBs is way less that the passing yards of the Receivers... so... not sure the story there. I'll investigate... but it looks like perhaps someone is missing from stats. It's obvious though that #17 Wunderlich is the QB and has been during these last several games. I don't know if a change occurred, but Pierre has become more of a factor, and in fact I didn't see him in a couple games in the rushing totals. LInton, since bringing in Gennicks at QB, moving Goodman to WB certainly found their offense. Padgett finally got on the field in week 3 and brought the outside threat. Smith handles those hard nosed inside runs, and we've seen Johns and Eslinger contribute as well. Where I get scared in pass defense. This is an area that seems to allow some big plays to happen when facing a big passing team. I don't know if that is Mater Dei's forte or not. I see big passing numbers earlier in year, then a change, and a 6 game winning streak and more rushing. BUt it may be in their competition level in those games. Either way... Linton has done pretty good against the run games since the North Knox debacle, and saw a lot of passing from North Posey last week. We did see a lot interceptions, an have seen a lot from Miner DB's. I know we will feel the loss of DeBruhl at DT, as well as OT. Hurt in 1st qtr at Tell City, and not dressed last week. He was a solid force in the middle. I know he did not suffer a break which was great news indeed, but he sure did not look like someone who might be back this year. We can't have injuries... that goes without saying... we have 42 kids listed...of those a handful are out. MD has 64 listed, and I'm sure a few out as well. But that gives the WIldcats a size-able gap in players in the 20 range. Looks like they may have three 2-Way players... This helps a team in a 4-quarter game. LInton has tried to increase depth, and has had success in that development. Losing DeBruhl hurts that..but at this stage of the season you put you best 11 out there every play right? I see too that Wunderlich and Pierre are just sophomores as well, It seems both teams are pretty young really... LInton with 5 seniors... I have to see what MD actually has. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that we get to this kickoff without anyone being lost to this virus quarantine or worse.
  20. As I walked the Roy last week pregame, and again post game, lemme say the field was deceiving. While it was very green, and nice long grass, it was very muddy under the blades. A few spots were pure blobs of mud. I saw several backs lose footing making cuts, lineman spinning out on the snap, receiving and defenders slipping on pass plays, and tacklers dialing in on perfect hits only to step and fall. As the game rode on, the field was more tore up and sloshy.... but.... a week without more moisture, and some nice sunshine as well will likely dry up any issues. Many folks think Mater Dei having to play on a natural surface benefits the Miners...this because the Wildcats play a lot of game on Turf. THey DID put 30 on NK last week on natural grass...and muddy at that. I would be more concerned with Linton playing on turf... but honestly linton played well at Boonville and Providence.... not so well as Southridge, but I think natural or artificial, week one was a different situation. If anything, a bad muddy field would prolly affect a passing team... and while the MIners have had decent numbers and some solid passing games, it still isn't what the hat is hung on. Mater Dei looks to line up 3 and 4 receivers per play and appear to have about 1000 more passing yards than linton. But my ol' man always told me that the Offense has the advantage in bad weather... they know the play. To sum up--- I think the field will be in fine shape other than the well worn places typical of late season runs. I will say we were blessed all year to have football...but also to have perfect weather until week 10 at Tell City... so the Roy looked great last week... keep in mind too-- the Youth League and the JV played all year too.
  21. it is very safe to say that Linton football IS small town football. It is even more safe to be that most every kid on that team is a Linton kid. Even if we could pool together all of Greene County we'd certainly not match the talent pool in Evansville. LEt's not forget Linton had two 3-year starters decide NOT to play this year!
  22. we aren't video streaming, and I apologize because I know people would rather see than hear, but if you want the history, knowledge, stats n facts you will tune in 93.3 FM WQTY.FM, or online at https://www.wqtyradio.com/ . FOlks have told me countless time how they'd love to listen to us while watching them, but evidently the delay is beyond repair.
  23. I am sure we at Media Five will be doing radio 93.3 FM WQTY FM.. it should also be on the radio stream from the station. I need to double check the address tho... it was always wqtyradio.com
