Were you ever this upset when the Philadelphia Flyers had Kate Smith sing God Bless America as far back as the 70's INSTEAD of the National Anthem???? Again, there is absolutely no reason anyone should be bothered by the playing of this PRIOR to the National Anthem.

I have never really been a fan of the nickname changes, save one. One has stood far above the others as being so politically incorrect, that I have thought for years now, even as a teenager, that it should be changed. To clarify, it is not instead of the National anthem. It is to be played before the anthem. I don’t get why it is such a big deal. Sure fans who “pay their salaries” might get upset, but to me, people are now just looking for reasons to be upset at something.....across the political spectrum.

Why? The idea that 5 pm on the East Coast at the same time it is 5 pm through most of Texas and Nebraska is ridiculous. There would be very little daylight through what is now the Central time zone in that plan. I am not a fan of daylight savings time at all, but this goes too far the other way. Friends in the New England area say there is a push to move that area to the Atlantic Time Zone.

The IFCA guideline is clear; for all members who are coaching, masks are to be worn by coaches throughout practice and games at this point. If you choose not to, then the IFCA insurance will not protect you. I am not a fan of having to wear them in the heat we are facing now, but I am also not willing to take a risk that could potentially cost me my career.

Thinking outside the box a bit; let's say there are a number of teams that have shut down for the season because of the number of cases they have in program, school, or even district. The IHSAA could consider adjusting classes; whatever that would look like. It could make for some interesting post season match ups.

I will be curious to see how each district handles things like a player or multiple players on a team becoming infected. I am thinking we could pin a topic as plans become solidified. One question I have that I can see the pros and cons to; should the IHSAA/DOE set the standards? For what a point a program gets to as far as the number of players (or even percentage of the team/coaches) that get infected before suspending the season? Which brings up another issue..........what could happen if multiple coaches get infected within a close time frame?

For this alone, I LOVE the plan to change the format. This will be my 13th season up here, and I do know this; the schools in the FW area will support the teams that are in different classes once the playoffs come around.

Agree on all counts here......i should have been clearer though; what happens if a significant number of players on a given pro team or even a college team decide they do not want to play under current conditions? As far as high school, the strange days are just starting. I will be curious to see what parents decide to do. I saw a recent story where a map of Allen County showed a range of cases based on zip codes. One of the red zones (high number of cases) was where a lot of our kids live.

I cannot disagree with him. So, what happens when players in each sport choose to not return? This will be an issue going forward. What about college athletes and coaches who are not comfortable? High school coaches and teachers? In my mind, there is still too much we just don't know. Keep in mind, we are only 4 months into this.

Great questions..... As far as any cancellations, or any standards as far as the number of kids infected; the State and IHSAA will leave those decisions to the schools. As far as a positive test, Anyone in close contact with the player will likely need to be tested, but if he was asymptomatic on Friday night, the concern is not too great with what we know now. I don't believe everyone on the field will need testing. I was tested last week and the benchmarks that are being watched when it comes to contact with a person who has it are: 1. longer than 15 minutes in close contact (6 feet or less) and 2. within 48 hours of the person having the first symptom occur. As far as return to play; the player must be symptom free for 72 hours before returning. Paying for tests is a good question. My guess is that local districts will decide how to proceed with that. I would like to, and have asked our district to include the antibody test as well. The clearer picture we have of what we are dealing with, the better for all involved. Some of the answers I posted came from the IFCA video conference. It is posted on youtube somewhere. I received a link in an email to view it. The others came from the guidelines the State put out recently.

That is an apples to oranges comparison though. Schools and coaches had nothing to do with the latter. If a kid in a program gets sick and ends up in the hospital; that reasoning will not hold up when the parent(s) sue the corporation and a coach or coaches lose their jobs.

30 players at LSU test positive. I know we can say they are young, they will be fine. We will see. I know some will say just play on, but the question becomes, can we really just play on? Regardless of who tests positive? This may not be a matter left up to schools. I know the districts in Allen County are working with the County Health Department. Even they may not be the ones making the decisions for football and other sports. Even if we do everything we possibly can and a kid or two gets sick, we know insurance companies are likely to point the finger at us. Thanks for clarifying those SR....memory gets a bit foggy after all that time. :) As far as the scrimmage goes, I did intend to say outside of the controlled scrimmage. The post I responded to made it sound as if multiple Saturdays were spent scrimmaging other teams.

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but there are a couple things that are confusing, with this coming season being my 27th season coaching. As far as the Saturday scrimmages, the rules have never changed. Once the official practice date arrives, there are no scrimmages or practices allowed between different teams. That dates back to the jamboree era, even when I played. Also, there was never a 9th game added. When we went to the all in format, back in 1985, , the 10th game was dropped From the schedule so the season could still end on Thanksgiving weekend. Dropping to 9 games allowed for the extra round needed in the playoffs. That was the same year that the 5th class was added.
