What makes a high school football program the best, or elite?
In my view, its a combination of the following factors that contribute to overall high level success :
* Consistent, stable coaching staff
* High goal orientation
* Alignment of feeder system throughout the program at all levels.
* High level of athletic talent in the building
* Multi sport participation encouraged
* Strong administrative support for football
* Top notch facilities
* High level of community support
* Alumni support and involvement
My top picks by class :
6A - Center Grove
5A - Zionsville
4A - New Palestine
3A - West Lafayette
2A - Western Boone
1A - Adams Central
Pioneer has the best 1A public program. There's a reason why they are now in 2A for the second classification cycle. Pioneer has the best public small school athletic program in the entire state right now.

One of the worst, yet one of the best. The Pit at Pioneer. The field is the worst...but, the home crowd is one of the best. We need more COWBELL!!!
The Pit will always be home. It's too bad that the press box is teeny tiny, to the point that deep tournament games are moved to Logansport.

Purdue has already lost Maliq Carr to Michigan State. Ugh :<

I believe at some point Josh Rosen will emerge as an effective QB in the NFL. A first round draft choice who never really got a chance anywhere he’s been. The one real chance he got was with the Cardinals, who were horrible, and then they decided to go the Kyler Murray - Cliff Kingsbury route. He could flourish under Kyle Shanahan’s system ... if he got a chance.
From what I've read, Rosen isn't a fan of watching film or of being a student of the game. If he ever gets his head screwed on right, he might become a factor.

They’ve now reduced the magical number to 3ft in our school. Contact tracing in our school, in our county and in our surrounding counties has stopped. Based on the last 6 months, kids aren’t getting it at school. Thank God We are Hoosiers!!!
on another note, I did hear of a local player who has moved to Illinois after our season for round 2 of his senior year of Hs football 😂
Eh, I receive approximately five e-mails every week from Western about new cases in the school corporation.

How could you possibly not win wearing that helmet?
Those boys must be breathing fire when they come out of the tunnel. Makes it feel just like The Big House!
Pioneer's helmets are actually based off of the Delaware Blue Hens.

Having long watched the NFC North, Stafford is a one or two year option at the most. Fitz and Daulton are in the same boat. There is just something in their games that cannot get a team through a season. I hope they stay away from them. Newton just has too much baggage; horrible fit for the Indy market. Darnold stays in NY.
A dark horse possibility is if Mac Jones drops that far in the draft, I think he is worth the shot. Of the 3 most recent QB's at Bama, he is the one that is a true QB. Hurts and Tua are good athlets who can make things happen, but that does not necessarily translate well in the NFL.
I think Jacoby is the next best option. He had a great start when his one season started. Injuries around him hurt the team; hard to put it on just his shoulders.
I know that Watson is a long shot for them, but take a shot; put out some feelers and see what Houston might want. They are in rebuild mode any way, so why not?
What kind of cap space do the Colts have?
The Colts have $65 million heading into free agency.

Realistic Options:
Cam Newton
Matthew Stafford
Carson Wentz
Sam Darnold
Jacoby Brissett
Zach Wilson
Mac Jones
Jacob Eason
Who am I forgetting?
With an aging TY and quite possibly the most underrated running back room in the league, who gives you the best chance to win NOW?I will pick Stafford out of all of these options.
You're forgetting Jameis Winston, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Andy Dalton. It might be worth it to gamble on Winston if the Colts feel that their locker room is strong enough. Dak Prescott is also available but I can't see Jerry Jones letting him get away.

SN and BC are slated to play this fall, should be interesting. The Contraction League would also be a good name...
Lest I never forget the Jeffersonville Red Devils
I don't like the word contraction. We can call it "DT's Monthly League."

Saw today that PU is ranked 14th in BT in recruiting during current cycle.
Is this the death knell for Brohm? Recruiting is the lifeblood of every progrm and there can be no bigger scarlet letter than to be identified as last in your conference.
What are the ramifications for Brohm and his staff given current negatrive trajectory of the program?
This ranking has been expected because Brohm's last two classes signed the maximum amount of players at around 25. The roster is bloated and this tiny class of 14 was expected. If Purdue finishes .500+ next season expect recruiting to improve again.
If you go by average player rating, this is Brohm's third highest ranked class out of five, if you count his first class of mostly Hazell recruits.

I thought 5 Star GK was supposed to lift the entire D line to another level? Was he overrated?
GK played well when he did play. He battled injuries and COVID this year.

The Pit is also a commonly used term, how about the Hole or Dungeon?
I knew I’d freak out like this: too much coffee.
Pioneer has The Pit and it certainly is one.
Winamac has Roudebush Field.
Caston has The Crater.

So is Purdue's Zach Edey basically too big for today's basketball game?: https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/columnists/gregg-doyel/2020/12/08/purdue-basketball-blows-20-point-lead-miami-matt-painter-zach-edey/6492120002/ (Note: Article is behind a paywall.)
I'm generally not a Purdue fan but it's sad if what Mr. Doyel is saying about young Mr. Edey is true.
I was able to catch the first half of last nights game and what he was saying is true. There were multiple plays in which Edey was making normal basketball moves, posting up, etc, and his elbows would hit the opposing player simply because he's so much taller than his opponent. Even the announcers were bringing this up and were defending Edey, mentioning that a normal sized player, making the same moves as Edey, wouldn't have any fouls called on him because his elbows would be hitting the defender in the chest. They were simple moves such as Edey moving and rotating his elbows to take a shot and etc.
The saddest part is that Edey has been playing basketball for only 3 years or so now. He's a natural and is already one of Purdue's best players, but I'm afraid that he might become discouraged and have mental issues if these types of calls continue to happen.

You don't really believe that do you? IU won 8 games last year (and likely to duplicate it again in a shortened year) and is building national momentum. Purdue fans couldn't stop crowing about who good they were going to be this year with a two-headed monster at wideout and an improved OL. Coupled with arguably the easiest schedule in the B10, just about every Purdue fan I knew couldn't talking about how the West went through Lafayette. Well Purdue is 2-4 and avoided their toughest game against Wisconsin.
And records probably aren't even the biggest concern. It's the overall demeanor and culture. Jeff Brohm looks absolutely lost on the sideline. His team plays with zero emotion, guys are opting out left and right, and are extremely undisciplined. Curious as to why you think next year will be any better for Purdue. They most certainly lose Rondale and while GK and Bell are terrific individual talents, the lack of development across the board is staggering. It's almost non-existent. Jeff Brohm, the QB whisperer and offensive genius has yet to recruit and develop a QB and his play-calling is downright inept. Heads are starting to roll in West Lafayette and as it stands now, Brohm has no control over his program.
On the other hand, IU is slated to return 75% of it's 2 deep (theoretically everyone could return given its a free year) and will be a top 15,20 ranked team going into next year.
What are your serious expectations for Purdue next year? Going .500? Unless the OOC schedule is very favorable (I don't know) I don't see it.
I do believe it. A lot of Purdue fans are highly disappointed with this team, but I'm not because my expectations were .500 at best. I penciled this year in, 2-3 years ago, as a developmental year and next year as the breakout year. I'm expecting 7-8 wins next year.

9-10 over the top but don’t see why going 8-9 every year is out of the question? Assuming their non-conference schedule doesn’t beef up that’s been 3 easy wins. I think IU will be better than Maryland and Rutgers for the foreseeable future and not sold on MSU either. There’s 5-6 right there. Purdue and IU are going in opposite directions as programs and depending on the other two cross-over games, I think 8-9 is realistic even if they lose to the Big 3 every year.
They're not going in opposite directions. Next year has been seen by many Boiler fans as the make or break year as Brohm's first good recruiting class will be on campus for three seasons and his first full class will be on campus for four. Purdue wasn't supposed to be very good this season anyway.

Due to COVID rearranging the schedule and playing 2A due to success factor the Pioneer Panthers got to play six of their games against teams that these boys had never played in the past. 6A Chesterton, 4A New Haven, Delphi, Bremen, Andrean and Luers. Watching how our young men went to battle against those schools and coming out with a win against Chesterton will stick with me for a while. Then going on to win a Regional in 2A against Andrean. (Those boys were huge) It was a fun year!
The biggest reason I was excited about Pioneer getting bumped up to 2A was the potential for new matchups. Last year was a major disappointment in that regard with the first round exit vs annual opponent Cass, but this past season more than made up for it.
I'll cherish the win vs a 6A opponent as much as any of the state championships.

I did a research project in an Indiana History class in college about how this came to be. Not sure how many know this about Logansport, but they used to be the Red Devils. The religious leaders in the town hated that so when they built the new school they renamed the team to Berries because where they built the school they removed a Loganberry patch. Felix became a thing when the coach brought in a stuffed Felix cat and they took it out to the court and it began a win streak for them.
I read in an article that a fan had a stuffed Felix and ran out onto the court with it after a win.

Rock on to the fighting socks!
The Chili Polar Bears is amazing.
And on the PC bandwagon Lewis Cass home of the Kings (the only Kings in the state)
Cass has covered themselves because their girls swimming team has the nickname of Queenfish and I won't be surprised if some of the other girls teams at Cass do something similar.

I've always liked the name Comets. Good job Eastern and Caston.
Panthers is the most used nickname in the state, but kudos to Pioneer for alliteration at least.
RIP to the Rockville Rox, but the Shoals Jug Rox strive to keep the tradition of wacky spelling alive.

Actually the fact that they continue to churn out great teams, despite having poor facilities, should give them some bonus points, if anything.
