DPI on TD catch-- 15 yard penalty was applied to ensuing kickoff
slice60 posted a question in Officiating Forum
In any Indy-area HS game played last Saturday (due to the weather postponements), Defensive Pass Interference was called but the receiver caught the ball & ran for a TD. The officials marked off the 15-yard penalty on the ensuing kickoff so the scoring team kicked off from the opponent's 45yd line. To my knowledge, the only infractions in which the penalty yardage could be applied to the ensuing kickoff would be Personal Foul or Unsportsmanlike Conduct. Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge! -
State Champion vs Class Champions
slice60 replied to slice60's topic in Indiana High School Baseball
Any school can choose to participate in a higher class in a particular sport for the upcoming 2-year cycle. North Daviess boys basketball chose to play up in 3A for 2 seasons. if Cathedral wanted to compete with the best to earn the title of STATE CHAMPION, then they should have moved up to the highest class. In football, Cathedral has 14 Class Championships. With the Success Factor, Cathedral has played a number of seasons in 6A but they have never been a state finalist in 6A. -
Personal Foul penalty (with re-kick) against Kicking team on Onside Kick
slice60 replied to slice60's question in Officiating Forum
True. But advancing the ball is not a Personal Foul penalty, right? Refs should have blown the play dead as soon as K recovered the ball, right? It's a grainy video but do you see a Personal Foul committed by K on this play? -

I was unable to view the video link you sent. So I apologize if it's the same video I posted. -
Personal Foul penalty (with re-kick) against Kicking team on Onside Kick
slice60 replied to slice60's question in Officiating Forum
145507.3gp My buddy sent me the video. It is a bit grainy but I think the ball bounced off of R player before any contact was made by K players. I don't see any targeting or illegal hit-- if there is a loose ball, any player can make contact with an opponent. Do you agree? Obviously my initial guess/description was wrong-- sorry about my initial miscommunication. -
The Kicking Team (Team K) fooled the Receiving Team (Team R) & a bunch of us in the stands with a surprise Onside Kick late in the 3rd Qtr. No one in my group got a good look at what exactly happened so I'm taking a guess based on how the penalty was enforced. The kicker dribbled the ball straight ahead, Team K recovered & actually advanced the recovery inside Team R's 30 (though I do not believe Team K is allowed to advance the ball on an Onside Kick). The official lined up on the 50yd line threw a flag at the moment Team K recovered the ball. Post-play, the crew huddled for a bit before the head ref signaled Personal Foul on Team K-- 15 yards marched off & Team K had to re-kick from the 25. My best guess is that a Team K player(s) made illegal contact with a Team R player who was attempting to recover the ball before the ball had travelled 10 yards. Please correct me if I am wrong, but if the kickoff has advanced 10+ yards on the ground, not only can Team K recover the ball but Team K players are allowed to make contact with Team R players to keep Team R from recovering the ball.

My friend's son is a HS QB here in Indiana. Before an away game tonight, when the QB & QB Coach presented the game balls to the officiating crew, the crew took the footballs & pumped up all of their game balls to the maximum PSI under the rules. As the footballs were already within the allowed PSI range, they tried to ask for an explanation but the crew shut down any discussion. I am just a fan but I have never heard of this happening. What is the game ball protocol for a high school officiating crew? I assumed that the crew's job was to simply check the PSI of all game balls to make sure they are within the allowed PSI range. If a ball is outside that range, then they would add or release some air as needed. But is a crew allowed to dictate the PSI of game balls?

Back in the one-class era, LCC won zero State Championships. I rest my case. -
State Champion vs Class Champions

Maybe it's dumb (to you) but it's also accurate. -
Maybe we can start a grass-roots movement in all sports-- the school that wins the highest class tournament is the STATE CHAMPION...the school that wins all of the smaller class tournaments are CLASS CHAMPIONS.

2 privates just beat 2 publics in 3A Semistate semis. St Joe & Guerin Catholic may meet up in 14 days at State Finals. In 2A, Park Tudor got knocked off by Brownstown Central (hooray!) In the other bracket, defending champion FW Blackhawk is looking for yet another small class title. In addition to the Success Factor, the IHSAA should incorporate an enrollment multiplier as some states do-- multiply p/p enrollment by 1.5 to determine their class. But they never will...
-
P/P won 12 of the 16 1A sectionals. So I guess you could say that P/P's do have their own class-- unfortunately, it's called 1A.

23-24 DOE Enrollments
slice60 replied to HoopsCoach's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
THREE points to stay up. (IHSAA should have stuck with 2pts) *** I feel bad for the programs that get bumped up at 6 points after back-to-back runner-up seasons. In my opinion, you should stay in enrollment class if you don't have a State Champion trophy in your trophy case. My proposal would be this: 1pt = Sectional champion 2pts = Regional champion 3pts = Semistate champion 5pts = State champion Change the bump-up number from 6pts to 7pts-- State+Regional (or better) would still be a bump-up but Semistate+Semistate would not. -
National Scoreboard - December 13 - 16

I watched some of the Florida & Texas championship games on Ballys...for free. Gee, how come those states still have title games shown live on Ballys but Indiana does not??? -
You are exactly right. Due to the covid stuff, Chatard was only moved to 4A for the 2021 season instead of the usual 2-year window. I thought that was kind of BS because nobody benefited from the decision more than Chatard football as evidenced by their State title last year & likely State title this year.

State Final Ticket Fees
slice60 replied to Daniel_Bragg's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Every school is now using Digital Ticket services (like Eventlink) who add on a reasonable fee, usually less than $1 per ticket. But then Ticketmaster steps in for the State Finals-- maybe Ticketmaster is forced upon them by Lucas Oil Stadium. -
Yes, lots of gray areas & valid arguments to tweak SF in various ways. There is no exact answer as evidenced by the IHSAA's adjustments every few years.

Here is what I see for the Success Factor changes in football for the 2024 & 2025 seasons. Please correct me if I am wrong. (This has been UPDATED AFTER the Semistate games were played.) 1A - Lutheran 7+pts will be moved up to 2A. Adams Central 6+pts will move up to 2A. 2A - LCC 3+pts will remain in 2A. FW Luers 5+pts will move up to 3A if they win State. 3A - Chatard 7+pts will move up to 4A. 4A - East Central 7+pts will move up to 5A. Ev Memorial 2pts* will drop back to 3A. (*due to change made by IHSAA in July '23) 5A - FW Snider 5+pts will move up to 6A if they win State. 6A - Cathedral 3pts will remain in 6A. So the only remaining unknowns involve FW Snider & FW Luers... Adams Central may be back-to-back runner-up but still moved up to 2A. Personally, I don't like this as I feel a school without a State Championship should not be bumped up.

In baseball, basketball, etc, the IHSAA already has the neutral Semistate sites lined up months before the tournament begins. Once the Semistate competitors in each class have been determined, then the IHSAA decides which teams go to which sites based (mostly?) on travel distance. If the IHSAA wanted neutral sites for football, they could do it-- but I don't see that happening. Regarding seeding, I was on the fence until my local team (Franklin Central) unluckily drew the 3-time State Champs Center Grove for sectional game 1 in 2021, 2022, 2023 & counting. So I am a proponent for seeding now. However, based on past history & Commissioner Neidig's public statements (to me, he is saying "No" without actually saying "No"), I just don't think seeding will ever happen. Also, I believe that if the IHSAA seeds for any team sport, they must also seed for all team sports. Football & Basketball have existing Sagarin ratings-- other sports do not.

Both 6A games were phenomenal. Congratulations to all 4 excellent teams.
