Columbus North 12 Bloomington South 7 (1:11, 2nd) The CN Bull Dogs scored on a broken play in which the snap went well over the QB's head and he retreated and tossed a long pass into the end zone as he was about to be smothered and the pass went over the outstretched hands of the secondary for a TD. The two point conversion failed.

-
Columbus North 6 Bloomington South 0 (7:59, 1st) CN Bulldogs got the ball to start the game and went 80 yards for a TD with the Panthers secondary getting burned on plays. The Bulldogs faked the PAT but South blew up the play.

Oops. I referred to TH North as the Braves near the end of the summary, but it was too late to do an edit. I'm sure their crosstown rival wouldn't approve of that.

Week 7 games in CI: Bloomington North (5-1) @ Columbus East (4-2) - Both teams step out of conference play for a game. The Columbus East Olympians have won four straight games, all in the HHC, and will be facing their best opponent since playing crosstown rival Col. North. The Bloomington North Cougars have won five straight games since their season opening loss to Mooresville. East is much improved as the season wore on, so the North Cougars will need to bring their "A" game this Friday, something they have not always done this season. The Cougars got behind 20-0 in the first qtr in their season opening loss to Mooresville and played catchup the rest of the game, falling short by 3 points. Against TH North a couple of games ago, they played about as poorly as they can play in a game full of mistakes, all on major penalties and turnovers. They survived the TH North game winning by 10 points against a bad team. Do that against East and they will be looking at a loss. East needs to corral or hold down North sr QB Dash King who can beat you with his arm and legs. Do that, and the Olympians can come away with a win. If North brings their "A" game, then they should win the contest. (JH's site prediction - Bloomington North 31 Columbus East 24) Columbus North (5-1) @ Bloomington South (4-2) - The South Panthers are a very young team (14 seniors on a roster of almost 90 players) after having to replace 17 starters at the start of the season and they have improved as the season has progressed. They will have their hands full with a strong Columbus North Bull Dog team coming to town that will feature the 1-2 punch of jr QB Asher Ratliff and sr RB Gino Prescott. South will need to be hitting on all cylinders on offense to come away with a win and they will need a strong running game from jr RB Braylen Townsend which is easier said than done with the Bull Dog defense shutting down most offenses this season. The Bull Dogs held TH North's Zyeiar White to just 12 yards on 14 carries last week and he came into that game with a 165 ypg average. South's young secondary is a real concern for this game. I would have to give the nod to the Bull Dogs in this game. (JH's site prediction - Columbus North 35 Bloomington South 21) Terre Haute South (1-4) @ Brebeuf Jesuit (4-2) - The Terre Haute South Braves make the trip to Indy to play a Brebeuf Jesuit Braves team that has a high-powered offense, so it's the Braves vs the Braves this Friday. Both teams are coming off tough losses last Friday with the TH South Braves falling to Northview on a last second FG, while the Brebeuf Braves lost to Roncalli by 19 points. Both teams have strong QB play with the South Braves being led by sr Brady Wilson who throws for 229 ypg, while the Brebeuf Braves are led by sr Maverick Geske who throws for 315 ypg. Both teams have strong runners with the Brebeuf Braves led by sr CJ Harris who averages 164 ypg on the ground, while the THS Braves are led by jr Tyisaac Corbin who averages 119 ypg on the ground. I see the home team in Brebeuf winning what could be a fairly high scoring game. (JH's site prediction - Brebeuf Jesuit 45 Terre Haute South 35) Southport (0-6) @ Terre Haute North (1-5) - This could be the Southport Cardinals best chance to win a regular season game, but the problem is that the Cardinals have shown no improvement to speak of since last season while the Terre Haute North Patriots are an improved team since last season although their record doesn't show much improvement. The North Patriots lost at Southport last season 43-7. Both teams have anemic passing attacks with the THN Braves averaging 127.2 ypg while the Southport Cardinals average a really weak 59.8 ypg through the air. THN Braves have a big advantage on the ground averaging 212.5 ypg while Southport rushes for 86.3 ypg. THN's Zyeiar White is the big difference in this game with his 145.0 ypg which gives them the edge over Southport. I believe the Patriots are going to reverse the outcome from last season and get their second win of the season. (JH's site prediction - Terre Haute North 35 Southport 28)

Some pretty thorough stats were posted for this game today at MaxPreps. Here are some of the basic numbers. South led 17-0 at the half in route to their 41-0 win. The South Panthers had 336 yards of total offense to the Southport Cardinals 164 yards. The Panthers soph QB Duncan Combs was 8 for 16 for 119 yards and one TD with no picks. Cardinals jr QB Gavin Cummins was 11 for 17 for 74 yards and no TDs with two picks. Panther jr RB Braylen Townsend carried the ball 27 times for 148 yards and two TDs. Cardinal jr RB Riley Matlock carried the ball 20 times for 57 yards. The teams combined for eight penalties with each team having four apiece. Besides the big game by Townsend, South's soph DB Quncy Brahaum scooped up a fumble and returned it 50 yards for a TD and also got a pick with 5 1/2 tackles on the game.

Week 6 results in CI: All games were delayed to Saturday. Bloomington North 52 New Albany 7 - I have almost no information on this game which was re-scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday and was up against the IU game that was going on at the same time that was about 2-3 miles away. The game went as expected and North took a 14-0 lead at the end of the 1st, and it was 31-7 at the half, with North outscoring the Bulldogs 21-0 in the 2nd half. That is all of the information I have on it. Columbus North 51 Terre Haute North 10 - Another game that went as expected as the TH North Patriots made the long trip to Columbus and probably shouldn't have gotten off the bus. According to the game summary that I saw, CN Bull Dog's jr QB Asher Ratliff was 12 of 17 for 129 yards and 3 TDs with 2 picks. The Bull Dogs sr RB Gino Prescott ran for 156 yards on 17 carries and three TDs while scoring another TD on a pass reception. TH North's soph QB Maddox Woodcock was just 7 of 13 passing for 48 yards and no TDs. The Bull Dogs held Patriot's sr RB Zyeiar White, who was averaging 165 ypg, to just 12 yards on 14 carries. Bloomington South 41 Southport 0 - This is yet another game that went as expected. I have no information on this game other than the final score and it is like there was a media blackout on this game with no one interested in covering the game. The South Panthers were the first team to shutout the Cardinals this season, but that's not saying much at all. Northview 31 Terre Haute South 28 - I didn't know what to make of this game with the Northview Knights being undefeated at 5-0 coming in, but all of their wins were against teams with losing records. Although the TH South Braves had a losing record, they were actually a step up in the competition level for the Knights. Terre Haute South opened the scoring to make it 7-0, but it was the Knights up at the half 21-7. The Braves scored first in the 2nd half to make it 21-14, but the Knights would answer with another TD to make it 28-14 with just over 5 minutes left in the 3rd and that would be the score going into the 4th. The Braves would rally with two straight passing TDs by sr QB Brady Wilson to tie the game at 28-all with 4 minutes left in the game. The Knights would win the game after drilling a 30-yard FG with just 7.6 seconds left in the game. I didn't get any of the stats for the game.

I saw where Richmond lost their game 70-0. The Red Devils have been down in football for so long I had to look up when they last had a winning season, and it was in 2013 when they went 7-3. They are 0-6 so far this season and have been involved in just one game that was even close and that was to Connersville in the season opener. The last four seasons and not counting this season, they have gone 4-36. They have gone through five head coaches since they had their last winning season, and I don't know if the problem is at the feeder system or something else.

JH's site prediction for this game is Columbus North 42 Terre Haute North 10.

Week 6 games in CI: New Albany (3-2 @ Bloomington North (4-1) - The New Albany Bulldogs make the long trip to the northwest side of Bloomington to take on the Bloomington North Cougars. The Bulldog's winning record right now is very misleading and the cumulative record of the three teams they have beaten is 0-15, while their two losses were by lopsided scores. The Bloomington North Cougars have played a somewhat tougher schedule, and are coming off their worst effort of the season against Terre Haute North and had to keep the Patriots at arms-length pretty much the entire game as they couldn't get out of their own way with a plethora of mistakes/penalties. It will probably be an unhappy bunch of Cougars that will welcome the Bulldogs and they will want to make amends for last week's game. All of the tangibles and intangibles seem to favor the Cougars in this game and I expect the game not to be close. (JH's site prediction - Bloomington North 42 New Albany 14) Terre Haute North (1-4) @ Columbus North (4-1) - The Terre Haute North Patriots make the long trip to Columbus to play the Columbus North Bull Dogs which is coming off their first loss of the season after leading Chatard going into the 4th and giving up the winning TD with just over one minute left in the game. The TH North Patriots were competitive against the Bloom. North Cougars last Friday with a lot of help from the Cougars. The Patriots are led by very talented senior RB Zyeiar White who is averaging 165 ypg. The Patriots QB is soph Maddox Woodcock and his numbers have been pretty modest this season and he is just connecting on .375 pct of his passes so far this season, so look for the Bull Dogs defense to key on White in this game. I expect Bull Dog junior QB Asher Ratliff to have a big game this Friday. Will Columbus North have a letdown after the Chatard loss? I doubt it but even if they do, they have more than enough to handle the Patriots. I expect this game to be over by halftime. Bloomington South (3-2) @ Southport (0-5) - The Bloomington South Panthers travel to Southport to face the Cards on their home field. The South Panthers are coming off a tough nailbiter two-point win over Terre Haute South, while Southport gave it their best in trying to get that first win, but lost to Heritage Christian by 10 points. The win over TH South was much needed by the Panthers after they played extremely poor in a loss to the B-North Cougars. I finally found some stats from both the South and Southport games last Friday. South soph QB Duncan Hines rebounded nicely from his poor showing against B-North and hit on 88.2 pct of his passes against the TH South defense, and was 15 of 17 with one TD and one pick. Panther junior RB Braylen Townsend rushed for 168 yards on 31 carries and had 3 TDs. Against Heritage Christian, the Southport Cards were led by junior RB Riley Matlock who rushed for 164 yards on 28 carries and he scored 2 rushing TDs. Cardinal junior QB Gavin Cummings had pretty modest numbers and was 6 of 15 passing for 89 yards and no TDs or picks. South's young offense is definitely well ahead of their young defense and they are capable of putting up a lot of points quickly, while their defense still has a ways to go, especially their secondary. South should beat Southport rather easily, but their defense could up more points than they would care to give. (JH's site prediction - Bloomington South 38 Southport 24) Terre Haute South (1-3) @ Northview (5-0) - To me, this is a very interesting game as the South Braves make the short trip to Brazil to take on the unbeaten Northview Knights which is No. 11 in the 4A polls. Terre Haute South's record is misleading and they are a better team than their record suggests, and with the exception of TH North, their schedule has been difficult. On the other hand, we don't know just how good the Northview Knights are. All five of the Knights' wins this season have been against teams with losing records and their opponents have a cumulative record of 6 and 19. The Braves beat the Knights, 36-27, last season. I saw the Braves play against the Bloom. South Panthers last Fri/Sat and like the Panthers, they have an offense that can put up a lot of points quickly, and like the Panthers, their defense can be leaky. The TH South Braves have a veteran QB who is really good in senior Brady Wilson and he was 18 of 22 passing against the South Panthers for a completion pct of .818 and threw for 243 yards and one TD with one pick. The Braves have a very good RB in junior Tyisaac Corbin and he rushed for 168 yards on 31 carries and scored two rushing TDs against the South Panthers. Against a really, really bad Owen Valley team, the Northview Knight were led by junior RB Slade Fell who had 7 carries for 113 yards and a TD. Their junior QB Colton Bath threw the ball just 6 times while completing 4 passes 76 yards and two TDs with one pick. Terre Haute South is just light years better than any of the Knights opponents they have seen so far, so I think they will come out on top in this game. (JH's site prediction - Northview 31 Terre Haute South 30)

Yes, you are correct, and they did just that last season against Tech in the sectional and the game wasn't even close. Tech does have a couple wins this season albeit against lower-class teams that are having poor seasons, but I would expect that the Cards would beat them again if they draw them. Although I didn't say it, I was talking about the Cards' regular season schedule.

Week 5 results in CI: Bloomington North 24 Terre Haute North 14 - I caught pretty much all of the 2nd half of this game after B-South's game was postponed, and the North Cougars looked nothing like the team that played almost mistake-free ball against B-South last week. The Cougars were constantly hurting themselves with penalties and were called for 13 penalties for 130 yards in the game with nine of those penalties being offensive holds which killed drives. Despite the penalties, the Cougars managed a 17-0 lead in the 3rd before TH North got on the board after the Patriots' RB Zyeiar White broke loose for a 65-yard TD run to make it 17-7. Each team would tack on another TD the rest of the game. Bloomington North ran for 264 yards on 39 carries with QB Dash King leading the way with 94 yards on 18 carries and one TD. TH North ran for 216 yards on 40 carries with White leading the way with 164 yards on 23 carries and two TDs (one TD rushing and one TD receiving), and that was a yard off his average of 165 ypg. In passing, B-North's King was 7 of 12 for 64 yards with one TD and no picks. TH North's soph QB Maddox Woodcock was 8 for 20 and 43 yards with one TD and no picks. Bishop Chatard 21 Columbus North 14 - This promised to be a close contest between two pretty good teams and that was what it was as the CN Bull Dogs suffered their first loss of the season. It was nip and tuck and the CN Bull Dogs twice had a seven-point lead in the game and had a 14-7 lead heading into the 4th qtr before the Chatard Trojans rallied in the 4th for two TDs with the winning TD coming with 1:05 left in the game after the Trojans drove 89 yards for the score. The Bull Dogs had 355 total yards while the Trojans had 291 yards. As far as passing, CN's junior Asher Ratliff was 21 of 32 for 208 yards and one TD with no picks. Chatard's junior Jack Harrington was 15 of 24 for 96 yards and one pick. As far as rushing, the Trojans had 195 yards rushing on 33 carries, while the Bull Dogs had 147 yards on 29 carries. Bloomington South 36 Terre Haute South 34 - The B-South Panthers have now won 20 of the last 21 games in this series. This game had to be completed on Saturday after a Friday night weather postponement and the score at 24-21 TH South at the 1:03 mark of the 2nd qtr. Once the game resumed, B-South regained the lead late in the 3rd and had a 28-24 lead with the Panthers maintaining the lead the rest of the way although the TH South Braves stayed right with the Panthers to the end. I can only describe the game in general terms since I haven't found any stats on the game so far. The offense for both teams dominated this game with the defense for both teams only qualifying for a participation trophy since they couldn't hardly stop anyone. However, the Panther defense did step up on a Braves drive in the 4th, stopping the Braves at the 4-yard line and forcing a 21-yard FG to make the score 28-27 B-South. It was clear that forcing the FG actually won the game for the Panthers since a TD there would have been disastrous for the Panthers given the final margin. B-South did score a TD and went successfully for two to push the margin to 9 points at 36-27 with just over six minutes left in the game. However, the TH South Braves went 80 yards on a drive to pull within two points with 2:42 left in the game, and the Panthers had to hang on for dear life to get the win. Heritage Christian 44 Southport 34 - This may have been the Southport Cardinals best chance at a win this season, but they have now lost six games in a row dating back to the sectional last season. In looking at their schedule, TH North looks like their next best chance at a win, but TH North is an improved team so there is that. I haven't been able to find any stats on the Cardinals so I don't have much info on how they performed stat-wise. The Cards did score on a 62-yard pick-6 in the game and also returned a kickoff 86 yards for a score. The 2A Heritage Christian Eagles improved to 4-1 on the season and were led by their do-everything junior QB Eli Nix who put up another game with enormous stats although he threw two picks in the game. Nix was responsible for 375 yards of offense in the game and was 28 of 45 in passing for 308 yards and six TDs while having those two picks. He also rushed for 67 yards on 23 carries.
-
Bloomington South 36 Terre Haute South 34 (final) Both offenses put up big numbers in this game with TH South also scoring on a 92-yard kickoff return that happened last night before they postponed the game.
-
Bloomington South 36 Terre Haute South 34 (2:04, 4th) With the way both defenses are giving up points, South had a 4th and 1 at their own 29-yard line and not wanting to give up the ball, went for it with RB Braylen Townsend picking up a first down on a 3-yard run.
