Agreed. There are 6 categories of DPI when we make that judgement. A cut off is one of them. When I saw it live I didn't there was much there. Then they showed the field level view from the end zone and it was the epitome of a cut off. That category applies when a defender is running down field with the receiver and contacts him in a way that pushes him away from the ball especially out of bounds. It's fair to argue judgement here if that's what happened, but that's what it looked like to me with the benefit of replay. As Bob has mentioned the official who made the call was in perfect position to make the call and because of that I trust his judgement.

Rule hasn't changed in a long time. The only way this is illegal participation is if he is knocked out and doesn't come back in at his earliest convenience. He isn't able to do that because he's being ridden out of bounds as the ball is arriving. He would only commit IP here if he goes out on his own and doesn't return or is knocked out by the defender and then runs down the sideline on his own and comes in much later.

This crew is from central Indiana and works big games every week in the regular season. They work a heavy dose of MIC, HCC, Cathedral, and Chatard. The BJ worked a D2 national championship game a couple years ago and was available to work with this crew (his original HS crew) because his college season was postponed to Spring. They are an excellent crew and showed it today. They were in total control in a crazy game and made big calls when they needed. There were several crazy things from an officiating standpoint that happened in the last 3 minutes and they nailed all of them. Anybody complaining about the officiating in the game show they know every little about officiating quality.

And trust me...the people most critical about the officiating in the finals are usually other officials usually because they are jealous they aren't working.

Central Indiana crew reffing a game in which a central Indiana team plays. Got it.

As I said, I don't know if the receiver stepped out, or if he did, why he did. But, if the receiver voluntarily stepped out and returned, then the result of the play should have been a double foul, i.e., live ball fouls by both teams that offset, and the down is replayed at the previous spot.

What bias? I said I didn't see that part of the play. I'm not saying what should have happened. I'm just telling you what the rules say. Or are you not interested in that?

Can you tell me where the refs in this game are from.

I did not see the play in question on the replay, only live, and don't know whether or why the receiver stepped out of bounds. But this is the rule:

    • A receiver who was eligible at the start of a play remains eligible throughout the down, no matter what.
    • If the receiver steps out of bounds as a result of contact with the defender, no matter how slight, and returns to the field of play at the earliest opportunity, there's no foul.
    • If the receiver stepped out of bounds on his own and returns to the field of play, it is a foul at the spot he returns. The foul is for illegal participation, a 15 yd. live ball penalty which, in this particular case since it occurred during a pass play, would be enforced from the previous spot and the down replayed.
    • Since the DPI and the illegal participation are both live ball fouls, they offset and the down is replayed at the previous spot.

From what I saw, the DPI was a good call. The other 6 observers I'm watching the game from the pressbox with agree.

    And you are not biased.

I went to grade school and high school with Fred, but only see him when he's refereeing IHSAA basketball games that I see anymore.  Yes, he went to Catholic grade school.

When I lived in the area, I'd often catch WEBO games.  Good football over that way.

Whatever happens, I hope that the decent Luers team shows up and they don't drop opportunities.

Wow you went to Sacred Heart, So did I. My friend who also went to Sacred Heart coached Fred in grade school basketball I thought he was going to make it to the NBA lol.

That would be Bishop Luers in the ‘89 Semi State 33-12 👀. That ‘89 Luers team was a tough nosed bunch. They loved to run the football with over 3000 team yards. Fred Moore was arguably the best back in the state that year with just over 2000 to finish the season. He was electric ️

Fred Moore outdueled Travis Hollingsworth who was one of the all time greats.

I thought that was Scecina fan though now?/

Either way my Luers friends, those who have been around here a long long time dealt with some posters from Indy who would refer to playing Pioneer, or other rural schools as the difference in the upcoming game was the "city speed" vs other schools

    nothing more, nothing less

Rooting for my friends at Pioneer to win this one and the next one as well.  But I am a Region 4 guy!!

My apologies to Ritter fans. Any school named after John Ritter is OK with me.
