  1. AC strikes first with a long drive eating up half of the first period. 7-0.
  2. At the finals, there are always 6 officials in uniform, although only a 5 man crew works the game. The alternate is used if anyone goes down during the game. The alternate also serves as the 6th official on any scoring kicks, going under the crossbar with the back judge, so that both wing officials can maintain their positions on the line of scrimmage. For the first time this year, the IHSAA mandated the use of an alternate at the Regionals and Semistate, in addition to the State Finals. Also, for the first time this year, the crews are allowed to choose their own alternate (within limitations). Previously, the crew was stuck with whomever the IHSAA decided to designate as the alternate official. The present system is a big improvement. True story: I worked the Penn - Warren Central final in 2003, and my linesman went down late in the first quarter with a pulled hamstring. We had to work 3/4 of the game with the alternate official, whom we had laid eyes on for the first time about an hour before kickoff. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your point of view), the game was not close.
  3. Soxeone wins those big Powerball jackpots, too. But that's not xuch of a financial plan. Anyway, if you think FSU is still one of the 4 best teaxs in the country, put 'ex in. But if they're not, don't. Participation in the CFP is not a reward. It's a tournaxent, an invitational. The 4 best teaxs should be invited. Next year, 12.
  4. We’re trying to determine a champion here. An undefeated FSU with a QB who has one foot facing backwards is not one of the 4 best teams in college football.
  5. All 6 of the crews working this year’s State Finals are crew members of the Indiana Football Officials Association. That is by no means an accident.
  6. The only reason it is not used in the Finals is that, for TV scheduling reasons, they don’t want a game to end early. Has nothing to do with competitiveness.
  7. This thread is intended to embrace all things officiating related to the Finals. Among the more obvious topics are: Any special rules or procedures in effect for the Finals. Questions or observations on rules or situations that may come into play, based on the teams involved, their tendencies, style of play, etc. In-game, post-game, or between game questions about rules, a specific play, etc. Observations by officials in-game, pointing out things that non-officials might not notice, or be aware of. I’ll be in the pressbox or on the field most of the weekend, and will post from there. Fans, here’s your chance for live action venting about officiating issues that arise, or have arisen with your team in the past.
  8. I think you’re missing it. As I read your post, you don’t object to the concept of the SF. Rather, it’s the definition of “success” that you find “beyond stupid.” Am I reading that correctly?
  9. You will note that, at the end of the game, the Referee will hold the ball over his head. When he does that, the game is over. The officials retain jurisdiction to perform certain administrative responsibilities, and can even retroactively disqualify a player or coach, if warranted. But they can’t reverse a no-call, come back out on the field, and play another down.
  10. I don’t see either team sustaining multiple long drives. Both teams have legitimate home run hitters, however.
  11. How do you think Ben Davis will do against Crown Point?
  12. I saw both of these teams up close and personal in the last two weeks. I think they are very evenly matched. Likely the 5A game will be the best of the weekend … again.
  13. I’ve always thought he belonged in the NFL. Guy has won everywhere he’s been, including the NFL. I don’t know why he puts up with all this BS.
  14. Munster first competed in varsity football in 1966. They are on their 3rd head football coach.
  15. Forgot to mention, there was a @maroonman sighting at the game!
  16. Likewise, the officials would not have the benefit of your advice.
