Basically, what I am saying, is this 2020 CG football team would beat any other team from any other year straight up.

I base this statement on the following :

    2020 season to date results

    2020 CG roster composition

I don’t think they beat 06 Warren or 01 Ben Davis. Just an opinion. Pretty sure both those teams finished the season top 10, if not too 5 nationally. The amount of high D1 caliber kids on that 06 Warren team was staggering.

The evolution of the game + size and strength of kids these days makes it impossible to compare teams from different eras.

I personally believe CG would sacrifice this game if it preserves their top priority, winning the state championship.  That has become the only true measure of success for the program

If this is truly the best team in the history of Indiana, they should still win comfortably without showing much. In all honesty, winner of this game probably has bragging rights the rest the year.

That's where I played my last HS game against Chatard, semistate 2003 (Dray Mason, Baker, Halliburton, Dury and company) -- holding them to three TDs was an accomplishment ... First experience was there as a sophomore in 2001. Not sure if the facility has changed, but I assume the community hasn't much. Does the IHSAA allow tournament games there, as it's previously moved semistates away from Broad Ripple.

Congrats on the win and season so far. I know they are taking it one week at a time, but let's see two undefeated teams going into Week 9 vs. Center Grove!

Fields obviously in a lot better shape than it used to be now that Cathedral has taken care of it (and Arlington no longer playing and practicing on it everyday) but do question if it’s the right move going forward if they decide to keep it natural grass, especially come the colder and wetter months.

Counted two X players who left with injuries last night that I would attribute to the playing surface and Cathedral’s best WR avoided disaster getting tackled on the concrete part of the track that’s 5 yards from the sideline. Parking isn’t terrible and there’s adequate seating, but it’s nowhere near the venue of Tech High School.

If these are the kind of mistakes Cathedral makes against St. X, I can see why they have very few wins in the series.

Irish have 2nd and long on their own 25 with under 40 seconds left.  RB runs out of bounds instead of staying in to keep the clock moving.

But then they choose to throw it over the middle on 3rd and long....... pick 6.  Great Good teams don't make those mistakes.

    Exactly.

    Awful clock management.

You forgot the the third phase of the game, especially in high school: special teams. Thoughts? Advantage.

Honestly not sure if Cathedral has punted once this entire year so that may be an advantage in of itself. Decent kicker who has the ability to get it to the end zone on kickoffs.

Your point does remind me that Cathedral has gone for 2 on it’s opening TD in every game this year with a different gadget play every time. I think they’ve only converted 1/4.

  6. Expecting a lot of fireworks in this one. X has rebounded nicely with a couple of big wins over LaSalle and Elder (Cathedral’s next two opponents) after a pretty big collapse against Brownsburg week 1. I think Cathedral’s secondary was exposed to a degree last week and X has a very capable QB with a couple big time receivers.

Same thing can be said for X as their secondary is their noted weak link. Cathedral has a ton of weapons on the outside and very good TE. Would not be shocked if the total is in the 70s or even 80s.

Cathedral has won the turnover battle every week and likely the key to staying undefeated. That and shoring up the penalties. Last week was a debacle as Cathedral had 14 penalties for 100+ yards. That can’t happen while playing St. X.

    45-42 Irish in OT.

Imagine this will be a much better game then people suspect, certainly won’t be a blowout...

Cathedral has definitely shown up in the last 3 weeks and is playing at playoff levels. However, I think this will be the most competitive game they’ve had so far this year. Chatard defense appears to have the ability to slow down a potent cathedral offense and shut down the Big plays that have killed cathedrals opponents so far this year. Chatard offense also showed a viable pass game against Roncalli last week and should be able to pass well against a less talented cathedral defense. Should be a back and forth game and best game of the week for sure.
    Gotta go underdog here....

    Chatard 31- Irish 28

I too think it’ll be closer than some have indicated but still think the Irish pull away late. Would imagine Chatard needs to put up at least 30 points to have a punchers chance but don’t see it happening. Competitive game at half with Cathedral dominating after the break. I’ll go 41-24 Irish

based on common opponents so far I will take CG  ; )

Wouldn’t disagree that I think Center Grove is likely the more talented team over Cathedral but final scores in both the Cathedral/Carmel and CG/Carmel game a bit misleading. CG scored twice late to really blow it open after only leading 21-0 going into the 4th. Cathedral was up 30 at the end of the third with well over 500 yards of offense and took their starters out only for Carmel’s starters to score twice on Cathedral‘s second unit.

Both very impressive victories by each team.

    Thumbs Down

    1. Ben Davis - horrific 0-2 start for the once mighty Giants with two mercy rule blowouts to boot.  Who would have ever thunk it?  Big problems on the west side.  They claim Covis has impacted lower socio economic groups than higher.  Perhaps that is so.  Maybe its time for the Giants to ease up on the non conference schedule.  The MIC is a meat grinder, and Brownsburg and Avon dont make it any easier in the oipening non con weeks.  Thinking maybe Cascade and Beech Grove as two possible replacements.

    2. Knox - 0-2    With Russ Radtke taking over, expectations for a deep state run and a possible blue ring are all the rage in Redskin Country.  But an 0-2 start has certainly taken some of the wind out of the Skins sails.  Coach radtke will get it right, probably starting this week against visiting 1A Culver.

    3. FW Snider  0-2    The Panthers are winless and on the opposite end of blowout losses to FW North and Carroll.  Snider has been outscored 89-29 in those two defeats.  This one might be even uglier than the Ben Davis start.  Concordia is up next for the Panthers, and the Cadets played always tough Homestead very close in a 7-0 loss last week.  FWS could be looking at its first 0-3 start in forever.

    4. Chesterton  0-2   Expectations have been growing for CHS football over the past several seasons, and the Trojans entered the 2020 season with some momentum.  A season opening loss to former DAC Rival 4A Hobart and a shocking 20-16 loss to 2A stalwart Pioneer have The Cheese looking for redemption, which will be difficult to find with aggressive Michigan City coming to town this Friday night.

    5. South Bend St Joe  0-2   Been a rough go for St Joe now for a while.  The Indians took a 42-0 whipping at home last week against Northridge, their 12th loss in their last 14 games.  very un St Joe like.  The next two weeks are an opportunity to right the ship against NIC foes John Glenn and SB Adams, before the annual dogfight against New Prairie.

    6. Western Boone  0-2    The two time defending state champions are winless after season opening losses to Sheridan and Western.  The Stars will get things cleaned up this week against contraction candidate Crawfordsville.

    Thumbs Up

    1. Kankakee Valley  2-0   The Kougars (with a K) generally stumble out of the gate by losing to smaller schools, but 3rd year HC James Broyles appear to have his 2020 edition in gear early after impressive and dominating wins over rival Rensselaer and Wheeler.  KV has 3 very winnable games just ahead against SB Washington, North Newton and Munster, and could be 5-0 heading into a matchup with NCC rival Lowell in week 6.  Certainly, Broyles will not allow his boys to be looking ahead, but things are looking up in the Twin Cities of Demotte (Day-Mo-Tay) and Winfield.

    2. Terre Haute North  2-0  Despite some pretty good teams over the years, Terre Haute high school football just gets nbo respect.  Booted from the MIC,  rejected by the SIAC, and generally neglected in Conference Indiana due to their remote location, the Terre Haute's have lived a nomadic high school football life, always looking for a long term and secure home.  Chris Barrett's 2020 THN Patriots are 2-0 so there is some to be celebrated in the Land of the Sycamore.  Bloomington South will give the Pats their first big test this week.

    3. Center Grove  2-0    Not always does a team do exactly what it is expected to do, but the Trojans are doing just that.  Completely dominating.  This might be the most talented team in the history of Indiana High School football.  Expect to see a few NFL players emerge from this roster one day in the not too distant future.  CG shut out MIC Rival Warren Central last week, and the 3 week juggernaut that includes Carmel and Ben Davis over the next two weeks looks like a walk in the park for the stout Trojans.  Look for CG to run the table and finish in the Top 15 of the National Rankings by season end.

    4. Merrillville  2-0   Brad Seiss is in his 6th season at Merrillville and has the program back to the elite status it enjoyed under previous Head Coaches Ken Haupt, Rick Wimmer, Jeff Yelton and Zac Wells.  The Pirates are loaded with talent on both sides of the ball and have speed to burn , which showed clearly in season opening wins over rival Andrean and 4A top ranked Hobart.  The Pirates open Duneland play this week against neighborhood rival Crown Point.  Merrillville and Center Grove could well be on a collision course that leads the two to a Class 6A state championship matchup.

    5. Wawasee  2-0   Been a long time coming for the Warriors,   Its been pretty much downhill riding for WHS since that glorious 13-2 state runnerup season in 2004.  This program needs some positive mojo and now has it after shutout wins over Lakeland and West Noble to open the 2020 season.  Now it gets real.  A very solid Northridge team comes for a visit this Friday night.  Lets see how much the Wawasee program has progressed.  Good luck Warriors.

    6. Jasper  2-0  and Vincennes  1-1  The two new entrants into the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference have made their presence felt with impressive outings over the first two weeks.  The Wildcats opened at home with wins over Memorial and Harrison, while the Alices took out Bosse in Week One before dropping a 22-21 thriller to Reitz last week.  These two schools are a great addition to the SIAC and make a very strong and dynamic conference even stronger and more dynamic.  Should be another very fun week for SIAC fans as Jasper tangles with Reitz and Vincennes takes on Mater Dei.

    No love for Cathedral?

I total get what you're saying Coach. In all honesty I don't think running it 3 straight plays would have made a difference in the outcome of the game. St. X ran the ball 29 times and had 10 yards total rushing.  There was still time left and Brownsburg I believe had all 3 timeouts. That being said it might have been better to throw a screen pass if you were throwing. Something high percentage completion and more like a run.

At the very worst, X runs 3 times and Brownsburg burns all 3 timeouts and X is punting the ball around midfield with 2 minutes left. Easters up until the last drive, as momentum had finally swung, was pretty disappointing. I think he was 9-23 passing with a couple interceptions. I’m taking my chances forcing Brownsburg to throw the ball down field with no timeouts left.

Brownsburg is a very good team , maybe the best in Indiana .  I don't see them beating St X if X had a game under there belt like Brownsburg did .I wouldn't call it a ST X choke job , I would call it 1st game mistakes .  Teams improve the most between games 1 and 2 . Was very impressed with Brownsburg though .

No doubt Brownsburg is a very good team, but I thought X thoroughly outplayed them all but 3-4 minutes. I’ve seen X play a dozen times over the years and that was a very uncharacteristic X game plan. I don’t understand X throwing the ball up late or don’t understand why X didn’t have their returners up considering Brownsburg was directional kicking the entire night.

But all in all, just about everything had to go wrong in order for X to lose that game and here we are.

    Cathedral fans,

Would you say this team has the ceiling to be as good as some of those mid 2000 teams? This team seems to be on an excellent path so far this year, and I remember many fans last year talking about how excited they were for this years team.

    I’d say better.

Bigger, faster, stronger than any Cathedral team  I’ve seen in a long while. May not have the top end individual talent as some of those teams, but collectively this team looks dominant. I think biggest question coming into this year was replacing 4 OL. Not only has that question been answered, but by the time these guys finally gel, look out.

NDs recruiting is clearly slipping.  Look at the 2019 Composite Roster Ranking, which includes 35 *** players, and the 2015 version, which includes 22.  That is a significant change in talent for the Irish

LOL. There is the patented DT we all love and know.

Say anything that sounds remotely true, get instantly called out on it, backpedal and start over like nothing happened. Rinse, wash, repeat. It’s like clockwork.

Nothing to report so far.  I hope some news is forthcoming.  Details seem to be sketchy.

The identity of the second deceased is listed in this article, John Jennings. Article also states that the third person shot and in critical condition is Mario's younger brother. No details of the shooting or suspects have been given at this point.

I struggle with that comment.  Can't it be both winning and developing your O line?

I do agree you play to your strengths....If one has a dominating O line with some strong backs....then make the D stop the run.  If cocky, why even show pass?....demoralize the team by running it down their throat...control the clock, and put the kids to bed.

If you don't have that type of line, need to keep the D guessing, and have the strength at Q, then do what you have to do.  Play to your strength.

It aligns with my "play to your strength" comment. If you have a D1 caliber QB and speedy and shifty receivers, why not run an RPO style offense designed to get your best athletes in space on decided matchups? Rather than appealing to old farts like DT of playing "smashmouth football" because old-timers don't enjoy a new brand of football. I struggle with his comments that RPO is "ruining" the game. It isn't.

  16. 4 minutes ago, DT said:

Love the coachspeak.  Really, I do.  You guys do a great job with these kids and your efforts should be commended.

I simply don't like how RPO has changed the game.  When you combine the best of RPO and extreme dereliction of duty on the defensive side of the ball, you have football that has become unwatchable for many of us from a different era.

Over the past decade, several positions on the field have become obsolete.  Fullback.  TE.  LB    Now the era of th mammoth offensive lineman appears to be coming to an end.  Scouts want tall, long and lean.  The 6-5, 320 lb tackle is being replaced by the 6-7, 295 lb tackle.  This is the new trend.

Some like it it.  Some dont.

    Huh?

The TE position has been revolutionized the last 10 years. What are you talking about.

You ever think the lean, 6-7, 295 pound is needed to combat the 250 lb DE coming off the edge that can run a 4.5? The size and speed of football players has dramatically increased over the last 30-40 years.
