It just seems odd to me that you have absolutely no one on the depth chart who appears to be the first team QB for Air Brohm next season.

Another huge roster misstep for Purdue.

There's just no excuse for this kind of roster mismanagement.

Both O'Connell and Plummer started multiple games last year. If they started last year how can you say there is  absolutely no one of the depth chart that appears to be first team QB?

They have a highly rated redshirt freshman in Peferi and a 4* true freshman coming in as well.

He just finished his RS Freshman season, sits his RS SOPH year, plays 1 year for PU and posts numbers that match his lofty 5 star ranking out of HS and BOOM, NFL.

I don't the TCU QB in Purdue plans after Sindelars decision to retire.

I can't see Purdue giving a scholarship to a QB who isn't immediately eligible AND giving one to a walk-on when they already are in a scholarship crunch.

Had Sindelar returned I could see Brohm cutting bait with O'Connell, but not in this instance.

How could it be that the QB Whisperer Brohm does not have a single experienced signal caller on his roster heading in to Year 4 of his tenure?

Thats either really bad luck or really bad planning.

Well O'Connell and Plummer both started games last year so he'll have 2 experienced signal callers heading into year 4 (unless O'Connell doesn't get a scholarship and transfers) and yes losing 3 QB's to injury is a little bit of bad luck. I believe Brohm has taken a QB in every class.

  4. 6 minutes ago, Coach Nowlin said:

    No Plummer??

Possibly, I am not too much in on JUCO/Grad Transfer route at this time as I believe that O"Connell's ability to go in there and productive has lightened the importance for Juco/Grad Transfer in this class.

Talking about a scholarship that could have been used for a JUCO/Grad Transfer at whatever position (OL or MLB).

Brohm almost has to give a scholarship to O'Connell now doesn't he? Plummer is likely out for the spring and you'd only have a RS freshman Preferi for your spring practice unless Alaimo enrolls early.

    Thoughts from IU NATION?

    Mixed reactions.

Thought he did the best he could given President McRobbie doesn't give an ounce about athletics.

Based on his job title, he did what he was supposed to do. Raised money for the university, improved facilities across the board etc.

It's unfortunate but he's ultimately going to be judged on the performance of the basketball program which has been a massive disappointment during his tenure. Although he didn't hire Crean, he gave him unwarranted extension after a single year and ultimately held on to him too long.

Still too early to tell on Archie, although with a new AD he may not have as long a leash as originally thought. Needs to make the tournament this year.

Purdue brought in Greg Brown, long time DB coach, who was at Auburn in 2018, though when you look at resume, doesn't spend a lot of time at one place

    Coaching career (HC unless noted)
    1981 UTEP (GA)
1982 Green Mountain HS (CO) (DC)
    1983–1984 Denver Gold (DB)
    1984–1986 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (assistant)
    1987–1988 Wyoming (DB)
    1989–1990 Purdue (DB)
    1991–1993 Colorado (DB)
    1994 Atlanta Falcons (DB)
    1995–1996 San Diego Chargers (DB)
    1997–1998 Tennessee Oilers (DB)
    1999 San Francisco 49ers (DB)
    2000–2001 Atlanta Falcons (DB)
    2002–2005 New Orleans Saints (assistant)
    2005–2010 Colorado (DB)
    2010 Arizona (co-DC)
    2011–2012 Colorado (DC)
    2013 Alabama (DB)
    2014–2015 Louisville (DB)
    2016 Missouri (CB)
    2017–2018 Auburn (DB)
    2019–present Purdue (CB)

He coaches CORNERS, while Coach Pointdexter coaches Safeties

    Gotcha.

Figured Brohm would have brought somebody in a little more seasoned and decorated. Schematically Purdue's approach last year was terrible and unless Holt got his way, is there much difference from having a co-coordinator step in?

Saw Purdue has had 2 DB's de-commit in the last couple weeks and maybe a third one on the horizon?

in my opinion, there is such a fine line between 8 wins and 10 wins, a couple bad breaks, calls, etc can dictate those things, so its hard to just have a flat line saying, if he gets only 8 wins then he he is not worth it or however else folks frame that narrative.

7-8 wins usually signals a mid-pack conference finish with a decent bowl game. 9-10 wins you're competing, if not some years winning your division and playing for a conference title. If Brohm is finishing 1 or 2 in the West in 2-3 years, does his $6+mil/yr contract justify the results?

I think you can get a lot of guys to win 7-8 games in the B10 West while paying them significantly less than what Brohm is making.

  8. 3 minutes ago, Coach Nowlin said:

It was well known that Karlaftis would be a Wolverine or Buckeye if that happened and many others were gone, including, Rondale who would of transferred.

Probably lose Milton Wright who is from Louisville. David Bell is probably a Buckeye or Nittany Lion.

Purdue was in a unique situation because Purdue doesn't recruit itself on namesake.

I do however think it will come to a point a few years down the line where Purdue has justify paying Brohm over $6mil/yr. If he's only consistently winning 7-8 games a year, does Purdue continue to hold on to him?

  9. Jury still out. Only thing conclusive is that Purdue is stuck with Brohm for better or worse.

Purdue massively overachieved in years 1 and 2 with Brohm and had a ton of recruiting momentum.

Yeah I think they ponied up more than they should have for Brohm, but at the same time, if you let Brohm walk after year 2, you probably lose a top 25 recruiting class and are back to square one.

If anything Brohm has elevated Purdue's floor from Hazel which I'm sure every Purdue fan can live with at the current moment. He may never deliver results that justify his top 10 salary, but if Purdue can win 7-8 games consistently the next few years (I have my doubts) the extension was warranted based off the mess he inherited.

    You're so confused.

Usain Bolt would probably not be an NFL quality football player, but it wouldn't be due to a lack of speed.  You seem to think that there is some sort of differing definition of the term "speed" dependent upon what sport you are playing.  I'll stick with my original statement.  All of those intangibles that you mentioned preventing some with track speed from being elite on the football field are due to a unique skill set required for football.  Track only guys may not possess those but to insinuate that their talent in the SPEED category might not translate is a joke.

    I'm not confused about anything.

Straight line speed does not always translate on the football field. Yes there are guys with blazing fast straight line speed (Tyreke Hill) who also excel on the football field, but being able to run from point A to point B in a straight line the fastest doesn't necessarily translate because football isn't played from point A to point B in a straight line. That's not how the game works. If NFL GM's, coaches, and scouts thought that's how the game works, you'd see a lot more world class sprinters in the NFL right now being taught a different set of skills.

Was not all that difficult after all.  Running 4.4 in the 40 yard dash is considered world class.  Since 2010 there have been 147 players drafted who run 4.4 or faster.  Of those 147, I counted 50 that are still on an NFL roster, but that number could actually be higher.  That means that approximately 2.7% of the players in the NFL are among the fastest sprinters in the world.  That is a pretty high number, IMO.  To me that means there are maybe some 25-30 guys that could potentially be Olympic sprinters  if they just trained for that!

The 40 yard dash in not an Olympic or sanctioned track event. You understand that most world class sprinters pull away once they get into meters 60-70-80, etc. Someone like Usain Bolt is capped in a 40 yard dash based on reaction/start time. A world class sprinters 40 meter interval between meters 60-100 would blow out most NFL players 40 meter interval in meters 60-100.

Go back on what you initially said and find me 18 or more NFL players who run sub 10.5 100 meters.

That means there are around 18.5 world class sprinters in the NFL.  I would certainly take that bet with you.  World Record is 9.58 and the times in the 2016 Olympic finals ranged from 9.81-10.06, so world class means @ 10.5 and below.  I am going to figure this out today!

    Knock yourself out!

Do you know how many world class (or near world class) sprinters are on NFL rosters?  I bet doing some research would have you retracting that statement.  There are several.  Speed is speed, and skill is skill.  Put the two of them in combination, and you get hall of fame guys like Rod Woodson.

Less than 1% of the entire NFL are world class sprinters/could compete in a 100 yard dash with elite track athletes.

I'll make that bet all day of the week.

Might be overrating Nebraska and NW at this point. I also think when we look at tiers with the B1G, we have to look at the divisions. The West has one tier 1 team. 2 tier 2 teams. The stakes are also better for PU, and UI to break through and be in the division title picture at the end of the season; much more so that teams like IU, MD, and Rutgers ever will in the East. Getting to a conference championship would be a big step for those programs, and would have even been a huge step for MN this season. I will be curious to see if Fleck can build on their success this season, or if they fall back.

    Agree.

NE is only keeping their head afloat on name recognition. They've had a losing record the last 3 years and can't seem to grab any momentum.

  15. 2 minutes ago, Temptation said:

What you are referring to here relates more to football specific training.  Slater has more experience/practice/expertise in getting through blockers to get to the ball but that somehow now makes him FASTER than Bolt or discredits Bolt's speed because its not on a football field?  Give both the same amount of sport-specific training and the difference would be negligible (or Bolt would still win by the 7-8 steps you mentioned.)

Aren't you the same poster who said; "speed is speed"?

If you can't grasp that flat line, straight speed doesn't always equate to the football field, then I can't help you. If the key to success in football was getting the fastest guys in the world (you know the track guys) then you would see more world class sprinters on NFL rosters. Period.

Yep, I am a USATF Level 2 certified track and field coach...WAY OVER my head...

    Please tell me more.

Then you of all people should know that track speed (also timed-speed, that's all track is) doesn't necessarily translate to the football feed.

Put Usain Bolt on the goal line with say someone like Matthew Slater of the Patriots and have them run from one goal line to the other, Bolt wins by 7 or 8 steps if not more.

Put Bolt on one sideline and Slater on the other with an 11 man kick off team in-between them, want to be who gets to the ball fastest?

They certainly do today.  That will change.

Outside their inaugural year in the B10 when they went 8-5, they've won 4, 2, 4, 1 and 2 games and it's precisely because they've cut off their NJ recruiting ties playing in a Midwestern conference and now competing against teams who have some of the largest athletic budgets in the country.

I don't believe Schiano will be Chris Ash bad, but it will be a monumental uphill battle for Rutgers just to get 5-6 wins a year regularly.
