  1. Well we didn't do so well with Rutgers and Maryland. Time will tell I suppose.
  2. And speaking of lighting and grandma's Buick - the first ever night time football game in the state of Indiana was held at Jasonville, Indiana. They don't even have a football team any more. The cars lined up along the sidelines and turned on their headlights to light the field so they could play the game! True story! There is a plaque on the site commemorating the event. I have to wonder how many of those cars had to be jumped after the game because their batteries ran down? LOL
  3. They've already played USC 2 weeks ago (10/12) and won 30 - 27. I thought they usually played USC at the end of the year also. Must have had a schedule change this year Maybe Bobref will know.
  4. Bobref - I retract my statement about playing the "cupcake".
  5. No thanks necessary, my friend. It was my choice, and I'd do it all over again if I could. I come from a Navy family. My wife also served, my daughter is currently on active duty (16 years of service) and my youngest son served also. Oh and my son-in-law is also on active duty (18 years of service). Never knew the Navy had close ties to Notre Dame until this morning. You learn something new every day, right?
  6. Still I'd think they'd feel like the "little brother" having to play on another field. I had heard (and you know how rumors are) they didn't have enough land to build a stadium at MD. You know how that has happened before: they build a school and then after the fact find out they can't get more land for a stadium. It happened to my old high school in Ohio. A few years ago they built a new school and still have to play their football games 3 miles away on the old field/stadium at the old school location. Not enough land for a new stadium where the new school is located. The land that is there and available is in a flood plain. LOL the other usable land is NOT for sale. By the way, Reitz does have the appearance of a very nice facility.
  7. Okay, okay. You've all had your fun. Both stadiums are built into hill sides. I would think it's a given that Reitz has a MUCH superior facility and now you've proved it. North Knox is still a cool place to watch a game from on the home side. It's high above the field and you can see all of the plays developing. Geez I've been to small college games that didn't have as nice of field as Reitz High School. Money, money, money.
  8. Thank you for the explanation, Bobref. Great story! After 20 years in the Navy I totally understand what honor is all about and can salute the grand dame for keeping the honor all these years. Never knew that story about Notre Dame. Thanks for sharing. The Navy is all about: honor, courage, and commitment. Notice that honor, is the very first thing. But Navy STILL will never beat the Irish. LOL
  9. As far as cool places to see a high school game not called LOS, try Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio. Seats 25,000. Same field they play the Hall of Fame game on since it is next to the Hall Of Fame. It must suck for Mater Dei to have to play on that field with the big R in the middle. Always a reminder you have to "borrow" a football field. Why doesn't Mater Dei have their own? Is it a real estate issue?
  10. I see. So keep the cupcake instead of playing for a national title? Not a very good tradeoff is it? Navy will never beat Notre Dame in this century or the next. If it's some sort of gentlemen's agreement from the early 1900's, let's forget the past and move forward. Until Notre Dame joins a conference for ALL sports including football, I see them struggling to get in the football playoffs. And as a fan of football, I think that would be shame. But you cant beat city hall. If city hall says , "we aren't joining a conference", then I guess that is what you have to live with.
  11. Not if the big dogs would be scattered across four divisions. Look at Illinois. They just pulled off a huge upset. How many people saw that coming? On any given weekend, anyone can beat anyone. Look at where Minnesota is right now. It can be done. Programs have to figure out ways to get better. If they don't, then they apparently are just accepting their "fate". Every conference has teams that are not the top of the heap. If the landscape changes in college football by going to super conferences, then I'd hate to see the B1G get left behind. IU is on the verge of maybe getting on the track to the top. Not saying it's this year, but Allen has them going in the right direction. There are only so many coaches to go around. Not everyone is going to hire a Nick Saban or an Urban Myer or even find one. There just aren't that many. That's why I think Allen is the right guy now for IU. It's taken a long while, but I think he's the man. I had hopes with Hep (rest in peace) but we know the sad events that didn't allow him to continue.
  12. I was hoping to see the Irish in the B1G one day. I get there are reasons why they didn't. Still, I think geographically the B1G would be a much better fit than the ACC. I know historically the Irish have played the service academies and also USC. Maybe since it's a new millennium, they should start thinking of revamping their schedule. They play Michigan now so why not just make it a conference game? I'd love to see the Irish play Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State, etc every year instead of in a bowl game occasionally. I saw Notre Dame play at Miami back in the 80's. It was electric. Can you imagine them playing teams like that almost every week? My wife is a big Irish fan and even she thinks it's time to get rid of some of the old "rivalries" that Notre Dame continues to play. At any rate, having them join the B1G would be a huge boost to the conference with another storied program and give the Irish a chance every year at the national playoffs. Win, win.
  13. I get what you're saying but think outside the box for a second. With 16 teams they could divide the conference up into four 4 team divisions instead of two divisions with 8 teams. That would give teams like an IU more of a chance to win a division banner and then make the conference championship. They would probably have to go to a 14 game season with the last 2 games being the conference playoffs (all 4 division winners get in). I've never made it a secret that I am a first and foremost a Buckeye fan. I was born there and didn't leave until I was 23, so the Buckeyes are in my blood. However, I have also become an IU fan since I retired here from the Navy in 1995. I have now probably attended as many IU games as I have Ohio State games over the years. As I mentioned earlier in a post, Michigan, Nebraska, and even Penn State need to get back in the National spotlight. The B1G has been carried by Ohio State, Michigan State, and Wisconsin for the past several years and mostly by Ohio State as far as being in the playoffs. I believe it would be beneficial for the conference to bring in more firepower. I am also a B1G fan. I want the conference to do well.
  14. miner_35 and Foxbat: I was thinking it was to Ritter because that was the year that Ritter came from behind to beat Linton in the semi-state. Heart breaking loss for Miner fans. Tyrone Walker ( I think that was his name) put on a show in the second half. Some of the catches he made were incredible! I believe he had 12 receptions for the game and only had couple at halftime. In the fourth quarter he was "money" for Ritter that night.
  15. But if we're talking "super" conferences and football, I'd add Oklahoma and Texas. Kansas is a football doormat and K State only shows up every few years. The B1G added Rutgers and Maryland for the audience and some recruiting. They aren't Midwest and neither is Penn State for that matter. Adding Texas and Oklahoma would do wonders for the recruiting not to mention strengthening the conference. In a super conference, there will usually be a couple who aren't going to fit the mold of what may be considered a geographic "culture". Notre Dame was offered to join and refused for whatever reasons. Missouri might be a consideration to fit the "Midwest" flavor, but they are up and down. And I disagree the B1G doesn't need another historical power. If it's going to be 4 super conferences, then YES they need another one (or two) power programs. So are we just supposed to sit back and let the SEC continue to win everything in football? That wouldn't be too smart would it? If I have the chance to add a Texas or an Oklahoma, I'm in. Why let them walk away to one of the other conferences and lose out? Kansas for basketball? Let them go to the ACC. Clemson football could use another cupcake on their schedule.
  16. Yep, I remember when they kept winning it. Quite an achievement. And now there are three 4 peat champs. Sheridan went 4 times during the Nick Zackery years, but lost the last one I believe. I'd have to check but I think that's correct.
  17. Okay. I 'll have to ask my friend again then. North Knox home side stands are built into a hillside. He said that is how Reitz's is as well. Wasn't implying they are exactly alike.
  18. I wouldn't take Kansas or Kansas State. I'd think about bringing in Oklahoma and Texas though. Just the thought of getting more recruits from Texas sounds really good. And then Nebraska and Oklahoma could be hooked up again for their rivalry.
  19. Long road trip be hanged, I believe S Spencer won't be within 2 - 3 TD's of the Warriors by the end of the game. The Warriors are in a good spot to find themselves in the sectional final this year. I was talking with a friend who went to Reitz. I asked him about the football field and he said the home side is built into a hillside. Sounds hauntingly familiar to North Knox's field.
  20. I see the 1A semi-state finalists being: South Adams, LCC, Indy Lutheran, and West Washington.
  21. I look at 2 of North Knox's losses as "good" losses. They lost 15 - 12 against 3A Sullivan and 12 - 6 against 3A Vincennes Lincoln. Both of those teams only scored twice on the Warrior defense and a bounce here or a bounce there and those games might have been wins for the Warriors. Their only other loss was to the Miners and they only managed to score 28. The Warriors have had a good season this year and I believe it's because of their defense. Much, much better than past years.
  22. That would be quite the jump from Northwestern to the Bears!
  23. I agree that Allen is on the right path. Fleck has Minnesota playing really well this year so he probably could be a player in the coaching market.. I think for this season, I'd say IU is ahead of Northwestern. Nebraska? We'll find out this weekend. As I posted earlier, IU is a slight favorite, but I don't think they would have been had they lost to Maryland.
  24. Think he'll make it in the NFL? Interesting. Never thought of him as an NFL coach.
  25. One thing that no one has talked about (during the season) is North Knox's defense. They only gave up `12 points per game average and the most they have given up in one game this year is 28. They also have 3 shutouts. I know people have talked on here about their offense, but their defense has played pretty well also. If they end up hosting the sectional title game, they could be a tough out on their field.
