  1. Evv. Memorial making an effort to end the Central Bears' season for a 2nd straight year... Tigers up 21 - 17 with under 5 mins to play after pinning the Bears back on their own 5 yd line with a nice punt. This could be last drive of game for the Bears...
  2. Not the game most of us expected but happy to walk away with the "W" at this time of the year. MD got out to the 37 -0 lead but Miners made a good effort at a rally to close it out at 37 -20. Appreciated the play by play guys on livestream tonight. Man, the main guy barely gets a chance to breath with all the sponsor promos he has to do btwn plays. Great to see Linton community supporting their team. The prime rib special from the local sports pub about had me grabbing my car keys and making a road trip.😷 I do have one question...what was the deal with the running clock towards the end of the game? Obviously that rule has changed this year but first time we have been subject to it this year. It was 37 - 14 to begin the fourth quarter, but that is when the running clock seemed to kick in - ?
  3. I think the term "Down, but not out" always applies to teams like Memorial; disciplined, well coached, determined. They may have had some unfortunate injuries late in the season but if a team comes in a little over confident - something the Bears have been guilty of at times - the Tigers could steal one. Central has all the tools to go deep in the tournament but have tripped themselves up at times, IMO. Best of luck to both teams.
  4. In past years, there would be a group of us who would meet at the State Championship games, usually in one of the end zones to shake hands and put faces with screen names. That is where I first met "TA"... still hard to believe he is no longer with us. Much too soon. Without Tim Adams, where would all go to discuss all these REALLY IMPORTANT things!
  5. To me, this is all just part of the experience and often the part we remember most years later. I remember throwing those kids passes but couldn't tell the game, the score, etc if my life depended on it.
  6. Back in the day - OLD MAN TELLING A STORY ALERT - before the Bowl had turf installed, kids used to go down on the field and play during halftime, after the band left. I would take my boys down as well and would often end up throwing passes to alI kids who used to line up. Once the turf was installed, Reitz maintenance crew would chase us off field because somehow our tennis shoes were going to damage the field. Go figure. I think he was just a grouchy dude who hated to see all the kids - including the really old one, having so much fun!
  7. Completely agree. I may have disagreed with some of your thoughts & opinions outlined in this thread but I respect them, nonetheless. Opinions are based on each of our own personal experiences in life and that is why they will often differ. Doesn't make them wrong, just different. One of my fave college profs used to say that "real understanding occurs at the point which two competing opinions collide". Life has shown that to be true.
  8. EXACTLY! Very well put. MD "recruits" new kids everytime they face the crowd and raise their helmets after victory. Kids of all ages are sitting in the stands (at least in a normal year!)see that and want to be a part of it. I imagine this is no different than most successful programs be it sports, band, cheer, STEM, etc. Success breeds success.
  9. The only "non-public" schools that exist in Evansville are the two catholic schools, Mater Dei & Memorial, Evansville Day School - a true private school ($$$), and Evansville Christian School, which opened 3-4 yrs ago. What people cannot seem to grasp - or simply don't want to - about the "recruiting" situation btwn these schools is there really isn't any to speak of. There is a lot of family tradition and territorial loyalty that exist among Mater Dei & Memorial famlies. Generally, kids who grow up on the East side and attend the east deanery schools, attend Memorial. Kids from the west side and west deanery school, generally attend Mater Dei. I say "generally" because there are a number of kids, esp on the west side, who leave the catholic feeder schools to attend Reitz. Academically, Reitz is a very well-regarded school, easily on par with MD with none of the extra cost. That is a factor for some families. Rarely do west side kids end up at Memorial or vice versa. As an example, Paul McIntosh, the great QB of what are considered to be some of the best Reitz teams ever, was a west side catholic feeder school kid who could have gone to MD but chose RHS. It is rare for kids who attended EVSC grade schools to attend MD. It does happen, but very rarely. I say this as a past member of the Evv Catholic School Board, privy to the numbers from all school across the Diocese & EVSC.
  10. This is factually incorrect, sorry. Depth & injuries are always a concern at MD just like they are at all other schools. Numbers do always equal talent, obviously. Certainly, the greater the numbers the more chance there is of a good player to replace a great one but numbers, in and of themselves, do not solve all ills.
  11. Now I know where all those Busch Light cans I find in my yard come from.. 😎 All Hail Strike Force!
  12. Since I have been unable to actually attend a Mater Dei game this season and have never seen the Miners play, my non-expert, totally un-educated guess is MD 24-14. This is based entirely on my being an MD fan & admitted “homer” so take for as little as it is worth. Best of luck to both teams for a well-played and injury free game and may all fans travel safely. We have all had more than enough to deal with in 2020 already!
  13. Looks like this will be another good game. Both teams are playing some of their best football and have improved over the last 6 games, or so. If I understand correctly, Linton plays on natural grass so field conditions could play a role. Weather is supposed to oblige, with little rain in forecast. So as long as field has not been torn up too much over course of season, playing conditions should not be a factor. Any idea if fans will be allowed or if game will be live-streamed on internet? Would love to be able to "see" this one, even we cannot attend in person.
  14. Rematch btwn Central & Memorial looks to be one of best Sectional Championship games in state this week. Memorial is improving every week and the ghosts of the past might be catching up with the Bears. Hopefully Coultis can dissuade his players from the "selfish" penalties - his words, not mine - that plagued the Bears last year and ended their season earlier than expected. Disappointed to see Evans taunting the Boonville DB as he crossed the goal line last night. Until recently, he seemed able to avoid the more foolish impulses that often got the best of his older brothers. Central has more talent but a lack of discipline could cost them against a team like Memorial. I still like the Bears 31-17 but would not be surprised by an upset here.
  15. Any chance this game will be live-streamed as well as carried on radio?
  16. Yes, I forgot about the annual rush from East Side deaneries to leave 2 time State Champ Memorial to come play at MD...mea culpa
  17. True. Loved how absolutely certain he was that Goebel was running the clock down and would go for it on 4th & 8...only to go quiet when FG team ran onto the field.
  18. NK "homer" radio guy "goes there" with a comment about MD "getting players from all over Evansville" . wth?
  19. IMO, this is one of the most over-looked issues, esp. at Semi-State level in 1A, 2A, et al where one team can be forced to travel several hours to play. There are also complications that arise from the tradition of allowing Visiting team to pick game day/night while Home teams typically set start times. There has been a bit of gamesmanship in this regard over the years. Hopefully sites could be found that are reasonably travel neutral and have more equitable seating arrangements than typical high school fields provide, particularly on the Visitor's side. Some sites bring in extra seating but these are usually poor set ups. Turf should be a requirement too, to cope with potential weather issues.
  20. This is the second 40+ year streak broken by the Wildcats in 2020. The previous streak, one slightly more dubious, where the Wildcats had not won an SIAC game in over 40 years, went by the wayside earlier in the season with the opening game victory over Memorial
  21. Appreciated the effort but the trio of young men doing the broadcast could use a bit more knowledge about the game of football. Let's just say that talking about "Jasper has the ball at their 52 yd line" was the least of their worries. Congrats to Jasper on a nice victory last night.
