High school football at a public school with 4A enrollment is cyclical.  The Dragons graduated 22 seniors last year, including the state's all-time leading rusher that had D1 offers and chose to walk on at IU.  They also graduated 3 starting OL, including Michigan State's Kyle King.  They graduated their ENTIRE secondary and 7 of their top 8 WR.

Everyone knew this would be a rebuilding year at NP.  I had hoped the sophomore class would be ready to step in, but the virus ruined that.  Less weight training and conditioning, no 7 v 7, no scrimmages.  And it's shown.  Not a great year to be inexperienced in a lot of key spots.

Finally, injuries . . . the Dragons have been very fortunate with injuries the last two years.  And seem to be paying the piper this year.  NP has lost three starters for the season.  8 more starters have missed multiple games due to injury.  That's 11 starters that have missed significant part of the season.  Some significant depth is also injured.  In the GF game, the Dragons were missing 7 starters.  The QB for the Dragons in the JV game hasn't played QB since third grade.  It's been just a MASH unit.  But that's just the way football is.  You strap up and play with what you've got.

That being said, the Dragons have been competitive in every game and are 4-1 for goodness sake.

Totally agree. Also on the side of injuries, I think injuries can be attributed to the lack of off-season too. That being said injuries can just be dumb luck too. You can go a couple years with minimal inuries and you can have a year where starting players drop like flies,

They graduated everyone. AND, correct me if I’m wrong, Coach Ralph changed his offense to fit The Big Fella.  I believe Coach Ralph likes to spread it out.  If that’s the case, these kids have yet to run that O, add the fact that they don’t have experience and it’s possible to have a down Sr class too.  Add it all up and you get a mediocre 4-1.   Having said that, I would not want to draw New Pal in the Sectionals.

No Coach Ralph didn't change his offense to fit the big fella. They have run the same offense since he has been at New Pal. When he had a couple special QB's they had a few more passing yards, but they still threw the ball with CS. They have always ran inside and outside zone with or without CS. Coach Ralph did a really cool thing during the shutdown going through games over his time.

The sky isn't falling for New Pal, I mean they are 4-1 played a good one with Mt. Vernon who looks to be pretty darn good. Who knows what happened in the GC game. Could have had a bad game (that can happen with young players learning), could have had players out (injury/covid), G-C could be making excellent strides. I know New Pal lost a lot of very good players to graduation (I believe entire secondary). That being said it doesn't mean as tournament play comes or even next year the players filling those holes won't continue to get better as they continue to be very well coached and gain precious game experience.

Yes a school that should be playing in 6A.  Playing against a 4A school, playing up a class, with a lot of new faces and starting a freshmen RB.

Actually both schools are similar in size of enrollment New Palestine 1,175 Cathedral 1,099. Classification goes by total enrollment and both are 4A schools playing in 5A after the success factor.

I gave that some consideration, but no doubt, the Wf folks will look at BlackBerry as the much bigger game

Why would they look at their Blackberry's as the much bigger game? I would think most of them have switched to iPhone's or Samsung's, but you never know.

Not even sure if he was the best player in Marion County that year. Dray Mason at Chatard was just a junior and averaged 170 YPG. Tim Sergi at Roncalli averaged 167 YPG -- also a junior. Both won state championships and didn't have cakewalks for schedules. Mason went to Purdue and was moved to CB, Sergi had a good career at IU as a RB.

    2003 IHSAA Rushing Stats

If Desmond Tardy would have had 203 carries or 360 carries in the season he likely would have had the same amount of yards. However being the QB. The RB's Bond and Lacey got a bulk of carries. They were pretty much a 3 headed monster.

I don’t think they beat 06 Warren or 01 Ben Davis. Just an opinion. Pretty sure both those teams finished the season top 10, if not too 5 nationally. The amount of high D1 caliber kids on that 06 Warren team was staggering.

The evolution of the game + size and strength of kids these days makes it impossible to compare teams from different eras.

Precisely my point.  We do know however that kids today are bigger , stronger and faster than they were 20 years ago.  Taken in totality, this CG roster would physically dominate those teams from 15-20 years back.  You also have to consider that this team indeed does have some future NFL Players on the roster.  That alone by itself is the difference maker

Watching that those Warren Central teams 2003-04 to 2006-07 I haven't seen many teams this year bigger, stronger, or faster. They had size, had strength, and had speed. Heck I think @Bobrefis still trying to catch up to a certain Warren Central QB nearly 14 years later!

Honestly not sure if Cathedral has punted once this entire year so that may be an advantage in of itself. Decent kicker who has the ability to get it to the end zone on kickoffs.

Your point does remind me that Cathedral has gone for 2 on it’s opening TD in every game this year with a different gadget play every time. I think they’ve only converted 1/4.

Cathedral has punted 4 times in 4 games. 3 by their regular punter, and 1 time with their QB. Very solid kicker for Cathedral too 17 kickoffs 5 touchbacks. He is also 18 of 19 on PAT's and 4of5 on FG's. Special Teams is always important with St. X, they are very well coached in ST.

Irish win 14 of 16 Games from the Trojans. Good 2nd half, Trojans.

Onward to St. X. They whipped Elder tonight. 38 Bombers 24 Elder. Lets see how we roll against the GCL. St. X stole one from us last year. We have unfinished business.

Great win for the Irish! As you put it the "Jock from St. Roch" was 25 of 37 for 360 0 int"s 2 passing TD's and 15 carries for 48 yds. 1 TD. He has to be a front runner for Mr. Football. At one point in the first half the Irish had 318 yds to 18 yds over the Trojan's. Penalties were a big thing the Irish need to clean up. The young defense shows some great times. Fortunatly The Irish Defensive coaches found plenty to improve upon and they will only get better. Even tough it was claimed they hadn't played a tough defense, they now have in those opinions and still racked up almost 500 yds of oeffense. I love that Coach Peebles said they won but didn't play great. shows his staff will work on plenty!

Busted coverage on one play, obviously u didn’t watch the rest of the game.

I most certainly did. Qb was 15 of 28 for 225 yds. Aside from that the comment I responded to was not allowing a free release to him and it did happen. Nothing more nothing less with video evidence. The players are HS players busted coverages and mistakes will happen.

Perusing the roster, Penn does  not look to have much size.  And how did the Penn staff not develop Ron Powlus?  At 6-3, 225lbs with a rocket arm, youd thunk we would be talking about a high school All American with a bright major college and nfl future.

What happened with Powlus?  Why didint it work out?  Was his dad a hindrance relative to his development?   Was the Penn staff incapable of developeing a high quality QB on their own?

Or sometimes the apple falls a little farther from the tree.

Pretty sure he was injured last year and had ankle surgery prior to the Homewood-Floosemoor. At least I think that is what I read.

I also read a story he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 9 years old but doesn't let it slow him down. Sounds like a great kid from what I've seen and read. He has some offers from colleges, I am sure it didn't help him missing time to injury last year. Perhaps more offers will come in as this season rolls on.

    Thanks for that info!

Yes in the GCL (Greater Catholic League) there are 4 all male schools (Elder, LaSalle, Moeller, and St. X) that make the GCL South. There are 5 all female schools in the GCL South (Mercy McAuley, Mount Notre Dame, Seton, St. Ursula, and Ursuline Academy). All 9 of them are in Cincinnati. They also have the GCL Co-Ed which has 8 schools.

Assume this isn’t a Chatard guy. I can’t wait to see who BCHS D-Coordinator decides to key on. Page might be one of the better slot receivers in the state. Wooten is a 6’3, 255lb TE. Etc.

I’m hoping the Cathedral D is the difference maker. Love our junior LBs - Huddy, Goheen, Utzinger. And our rassler captain Guuuuuhl.

It will be a typical, ugly rivalry battle and I can’t wait. Praying for an injury free game. See you all at 4:30p tomorrow at KofC. First Fireball is on me. Go Irish.

Very tempting! Reminds me of my first ND home game I ever attended. The tailgate had plenty of Fireball and Dr. McGillicuddy's! Enjoy it!

Wayyyyy too much confidence in a guy that played very below average defenses for the first 3 weeks. Half his catches versus Carmel and Penn were straight up the seam untouched by a single defender and blown coverages. Aggressive chatard DB’s will not be playing patty cake and allowing free release down the seam. No doubt he will make some plays but this chatard defense is known for being one of the most aggressive, fast, and hard hitting defenses every year state-wide. I’d study up before assuming one guy can win the game against a veteran defense more aggressive than the historically soft Carmel defense of a few weeks ago😂

Please go to 0:58 of this video. 88 yds. I've watched them play great defense's and he has broke free (eg St. Xavier 2 times last year). I hated it for him that he was injured in the Brebeuf game last year and missed the playoffs. He was having an outstanding season.

Not necessarily comparing them to another team, maybe compared to Last years cathedral defense...

Shiloh was definitely a big loss for the secondary and the d-line doesn’t look as strong this year, definitely still a talented group but a lot of young guys that I would assume chatard will attempt to target throughout the game passing  wise...

I expect the best matchup of the night to be cathedral offense against chatard defense. Will be interesting to see McCahil, Jordan, Perry, Langdon, Wooten, Tibbs/Page pair up with Calvert, Kinnett, Bolen, Coons, Haslett, Fillenwarth, Babcock... should be very exciting to watch and will really be where the game is decided in my opinion...

    Interesting statement

So far, I am not seeing any evidence of this.  It’s not listed as playing on IHSAATV or affiliates.

Chatard did webcast the East Central home game on Facebook a couple of weeks ago but I’ve seen no announcement regarding this as of yet, either.

In theory (note....”theory”), this is a game between No. 3 and No. 5 per Maxpreps/Calpreps and should technically (note....”technically”) constitute the premier game this weekend in Indiana.

I agree with your theory and technical thoughts. I would imagine it will be.

I work in a manufacturing plant with over, 1,000 union workers where 80-90% refuse to wear masks . Our plant never shut down and had five people test positive for the coronavirus on two seperate ocassions. The company implemented a mandatory mask policy on May 04. The union workers refuse to wear masks or social distance and the union supports their workforce.  I observe hundreds playing cards at picnic tables during their break and lunch periods. They sit in groups of four and no one is more than two feet away from the other three workers. No one is wearing masks or social distancing.

The plant has worked 6-7 days per week since the coronavirus outbreak including all 31 days in August. There has been no further spread of the coronavirus for the past 124 days. Virtually no one is wearing masks or social distancing.  The human immune system and herd immunity is the key. All of this social distancing and wearing cheap non medical grade masks from China is nonsense.

I'm surprised the State Health Department hasn't caught wind and been involved. Not that I agree with them doing so, but the company would be in for some fines by the State Health Department which I would imagine create action with the Union. The Health Department has been issuing fines to places of business not in compliance with the mandates.

That week 9 game between CG and Cathedral really does neither program any good this year.  Both will likley be undefeated and overwhelming favorites to win their class championships.  One will have its regular season record blemished, which is a shame.

I would rather see this game in Week 2 and have CG play a conference game in Week 9, regardless of who they might play in MIC action.  One of the saving graces of week 9 is that therer are a lot of conference championships on the line.  Its not just a week to rest before the tiournament starts.  Or in the case of CG vs WC or CG vs Cathedral, lose kids to injury ina hard fought battle over nothing but bragging rights.

I wouldn't say both are likely to be undefeated coming into that game. Both could be undefeated but it's not likely. that being said overwhelming favorites to win their class championship is very true. North Central and Lawrence North won't be walks in the park by any means for the Trojan's, those are the only 2 teams I can see that will pose a challenge prior to week 9. For the Irish they have their rival Chatard this week and it doesn't matter who the more talented team is it is always a war. Even so the Irish also have 3 Ohio teams from the GCL South on the schedule.

Having a regular season blemish for either team will A. provide even more fire B. help them learn from mistakes against another very talented team.

It will be a good game but it will be meaningless.  I doubt either team will go all out to win especially with the playoffs next on the schedule.

I absolutely agree with you the game has no meaning when it comes to the tournament and no conference implications. I have thought over the last 3-4 years that they wouldn't go all out. However both teams have surprised me and did go all out. Been some great battles between the 2 teams. Perhaps it will depend on both teams health when they get to that point.

At the very worst, X runs 3 times and Brownsburg burns all 3 timeouts and X is punting the ball around midfield with 2 minutes left. Easters up until the last drive, as momentum had finally swung, was pretty disappointing. I think he was 9-23 passing with a couple interceptions. I’m taking my chances forcing Brownsburg to throw the ball down field with no timeouts left.

St. Xavier's problem was they couldn't run the ball at all against Brownsburg 29 carries for net 10 yards was not good at all. Yes they definitely should have ran the ball 3 times and forced Brownsburg to burn timeouts. Punting was going to be shakey just as well for St. X after what just happened previously with a terrible snap. Easter's problem was up until the 4th quarter 75% of his incomplete passes were targeted to Terrell on deep balls (fades wheel route). When they finally figured out that Lacey was open underneath and they could hit the RB out of the backfield they started moving the ball. Terrell is a great WR but St. X was keying on him.

If St. X could run the ball better they would have won the game. I credit that to Brownsburg front 7 they bottled up the run all night. This was the first start for McCaughey with no run game he was eventually going to make a mistake. You could definitely tell it was St. X's first game and the lack of summer practices definitely made a difference for a team like St. X. They typically play very fundamental and don't make many mistakes waiting for the other team to make a mistake.

  20. 28 minutes ago, Coach Nowlin said:

How many Timeouts did Brownsburg have?    Make Them burn them, even if they go 3 and out and only burn 90 seconds or so, you punt the ball, flip the field and make Brownsburg go longer than 30 some yards.

Like I said I totally get it and know that is what you should do and agree. I don't think it would have changed the outcome of the game. Momentum was definitely swinging.

    Go Dogs!!!

I total get what you're saying Coach. In all honesty I don't think running it 3 straight plays would have made a difference in the outcome of the game. St. X ran the ball 29 times and had 10 yards total rushing.  There was still time left and Brownsburg I believe had all 3 timeouts. That being said it might have been better to throw a screen pass if you were throwing. Something high percentage completion and more like a run.
