Frozen Tundra

Based on conversations I’ve had, Bloomington South has no interest in the HHC. Like Columbus North, they see the conference as beneath them. They would aim for the Mid-State. Bloomington North, on the other hand, would like to go to the Mid-State (they tried a few years ago), but they also have considered returning to the HHC. I believe they’re keeping that option open in the event they have to save themselves should Conference Indiana finally fall apart. If I’m the HHC, I don’t see a need to expand. We can make do with 7 like we are right now and, if Jennings County were to leave, I believe we could also make do with 6. Nevertheless, if Bloomington North ever comes knocking on the door, I think you have to take them. But, if not, I think we should just sit at 6 or 7 until Silver Creek and Charlestown grow big enough to get an invite.

Decatur Central, Perry Meridian, and Southport could be candidates for the MIC. If that were to happen then it opens up 2-3 spots in the Mid-State (with Greenwood also leaving). You’d have to think Columbus North and the Bloomington schools get looked at. Heck, maybe even Southport gets looked at if they don’t go to the MIC. This would effectively end Conference Indiana. Then you have the Hoosier Heritage Conference. Shelbyville is leaving and Delta has been wanting out for awhile but hasn’t had any offers to go elsewhere. I’ve also heard New Castle has flirted with the idea of leaving. Maybe the Hoosier Heritage could pull in Richmond. Maybe they aim for Connersville. If it’s the latter then that opens the door for EIAC expansion. Jennings County has wanted in for awhile. Would this provide them the opportunity? These are all hypotheticals but I have to think something is going to happen at some point that affects the HHC. Over the last 10-15 years, a lot of conferences have dealt with population changes in which their schools are getting further apart. The shrinking schools can’t keep up with the growing schools. This has led to many schools wanting to make changes but they’re waiting on the domino effect of other schools making moves first so that it opens the door for them. The creation of two brand new conferences (Hoosier Legends Conference and Monon Athletic Conference) has kickstarted this new wave of realignment and I think it’ll eventually have ripple effects that are felt in the HHC as well.

Well Shelbyville just voted to leave the Hoosier Heritage Conference and join the brand new Hoosier Legends Conference. That opens up a spot in the Hoosier Heritage. No official word on Greenwood yet but they’re expected to join Shelbyville which would open a spot in the Mid-State Conference. The MIC still has two open spots with Carmel and Center Grove gone. If those three conferences decide to fill some spots then it’ll be interesting to see if the Hoosier Hills Conference becomes part of the domino effect. Something to keep an eye or two on.

Week 8 Picks Floyd Central (4-2, 3-1 HHC) at Jennings County (0-7, 0-4 HHC): Not much to say here. The Panthers haven’t scored a touchdown against a varsity defense in five weeks. The Highlanders are still in the running for a second straight HHC title, although they need some help. Should be a quick one in North Vernon as Floyd Central runs them over. The Highlanders lead the all-time series 42-8 and have won 7 of the last 8 and 24 of the last 26. Jeffersonville (5-2, 3-1 HHC) at Columbus East (4-3, 4-0 HHC): The Olympians are one win away from clinching at least a share of their first HHC title in the post-Gaddis era. The Red Devils need this win to keep their HHC title hopes alive. Their last conference championship was in 1997. While a Jeff upset win wouldn’t shock me, I’m going off how these teams have done against common opponents. East had better win margins against Seymour and New Albany and, unlike Jeffersonville, they defeated Floyd Central. Columbus East leads the all-time series 32-11 and has won the last 20 games. Seymour (3-4, 2-3 HHC) at New Albany (3-4, 2-2 HHC): Once again, I’m basing my prediction on results against common opponents. Both teams beat BNL and Jennings County and both teams lost to Jeff and Columbus East. In all four games, the margins were better for the Owls. I wouldn’t necessarily rule out a Bulldogs upset, but the numbers favor Seymour so that’s who I’m taking. Due to the age of these two schools, and the incomplete info as a result, Almanac Sports has New Albany leading the all-time series 28-14. Seymour has won the last two games though. BNL (1-6) at Madison (3-4): This is the final time the Stars and Cubs will meet on the gridiron, leaving rival Jennings County as the only remaining HHC team on Madison’s schedule. While a BNL win seems possible, Madison has improved and, on paper, has been the better team this year. Therefore, I’m going with Madison. BNL leads the all-time series 31-5 and has won 3 of the last 4.

Jeffersonville 40, New Albany 22 Final

Jeff led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter but New Albany cut it to 20-14 by halftime. Haven’t seen an update since then.

Fishers had turned it over on downs at the Franklin Central 27 but a roughing the passer kept the drive alive and they took advantage with a 6 yard TD run. Franklin Central 9, Fishers 7 2:04 left in the half

After the safety, Franklin Central received the ball and put a nice drive together. Went around 90 yards. They capped it off with a short run for the TD. Franklin Central 9, Fishers 0 1:28 left in the first quarter

After a 3 and out by Franklin Central, Fishers goes 3 and out but snaps the ball over the punter’s head. He recovers it in the endzone but steps out the back as he’s about to get smashed. Safety. Flashes lead 2-0 with 8:13 left in the first quarter.

Week 7 Picks Floyd Central (3-2, 2-1 HHC) at BNL (1-5, 1-3 HHC): The Stars come into this game on a high after their first win of the season while the Highlanders enter coming off the low of their first conference loss of the season. This doesn’t bode well for BNL as Floyd Central looks to get back on track by taking all of their anger and frustration out on them. FC wins easily. The Highlanders have won 5 out of the last 6 and lead the series 30-24. Jennings County (0-6, 0-3 HHC) at Seymour (2-4, 1-3 HHC): Not much to say here. The Panthers are by far the worst team in the conference and have somehow gotten worse as the season has progressed. Seymour should win easily. This rivalry has taken a backseat ever since the Jackson Bowl was brought back 17 years ago, and for good reason. The Owls lead the all-time series 48-10 and have won the last 9 games. New Albany (3-3, 2-1 HHC) at Jeffersonville (4-2, 2-1 HHC): Speaking of rivalries, this one is much older and much better than Jennings County/Seymour. The Bulldogs are coming off a couple blowout losses and their HHC record is a bit misleading given who they’ve played thus far. The Red Devils will be motivated to keep themselves in the HHC title race and, along with their superior talent, should be able to pull out a win. Almanac Sports doesn’t have a complete history of this rivalry as there are several gaps in their database for both teams. However, based on what they have on record, New Albany leads 42-41-2 going back to 1923. The Bulldogs have won the last 3 games in the series. #6/#9 Bloomington North (5-1) at Columbus East (4-2): When the Cougars are on their A-game, they’re a very difficult team to beat. However, this team has struggled with consistency, with their lone loss to a 2-4 Mooresville team and a couple unimpressive wins against the Terre Haute schools which are a combined 2-9. If the Olympians can contain Bloomington North’s mobile QB and be able to move the ball downfield like they have the last three weeks, I think this is a very winnable game for them. Nevertheless, I’m going the safe route here and picking the Cougars as East hasn’t won a non-conference game in four years. The Olympians lead the all-time series 12-6 but Bloomington North has won the last two games.

I hope it is Shelbyville. They definitely need a change.

I know Martinsville has shrunk by nearly 200 over the last few cycles and dropped from 5A to 4A. Wasn’t sure if that was expected to continue or if they’ve flattened out.
