I see the same top four teams in the conference again competing for the conference crown with somewhat of a shakeup at the top and Terre Haute North (0-10) and Southport (2-9) hoping to just look a little more competitive this season. It's really difficult to predict winners and losers in the conference for Week 1  for the top four teams with maybe Bloom. North being the biggest favorite in their matchup.

Bloomington North appears to be the favorite with a lot of experience returning from a 9-1 team last year to include Dash King, with their only loss to Bloomington South in last season's sectional.

Columbus North returns a lot of experience and starters from a 5-6 team and could challenge for the conference crown.

Bloomington South went 11-2 last season losing to Decatur Central in the semi-state, and they return just five starters overall from that team. Back-ups from last year's team and players from the unbeaten JV team look to fill the graduation holes, and just how quickly they can do that remains to be seen. South scrimmaged against Carmel, Center Grove and then at Lawrence Central where their 6-5 soph QB Duncan Combs, who guided the JV team to an unbeaten record as a freshman, looked really good in the scrimmages.

Terre Haute South is the other team in the mix for a conference crown and after getting off to a rough 1-4 start last season, they finished the regular season with a 3-2 record with a narrow loss to Columbus North and a blowout loss to Bloom. South. I don't know what they have coming back, but they will probably to competitive.

Southport and Terre Haute North should be the bottom dwellers again.

All CI teams are on the road in week 1 except for Southport.

I’ll be curious to see how Bloomington North looks with a brand new coach. I know he’s a longtime assistant but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be successful. Maybe he has enough talent and experience to overcome in coaching deficiencies though. If so, it seems the subsequent years will be the true test of his worth.

Yeah, it's Lindsey's first year to call all of the shots, which is certainly different and more challenging than being a position coach as we all know. He couldn't ask for a better situation to break in his head coaching career with a very experienced squad returning and a senior QB in Dash King to guide the offense. About the only thing that could trip them up this season is a rash of injuries, especially among the key starters.

Intersted to see the panthers this season. However Not looking forward to watching bhsn dominating with a roster containing kids that historically would be Panthers and reasonably should be Panthers given their Place of residence in the county. At any rate I complain bout that every year so time to move forward.

Anyone here remember Carson Steele from Center Grove? Guy looks to ha e tree trunks for thighs and is now on the kc chiefs roster and looks like he is gonna make the cut. Hope not because I don't like the chiefs would rather see him elsewhere.

@ptr Literally zero coverage of south c , east. Even on x ht doesn't have any reporters. The columbusbradio are at c north vs Decatur and brownstown game .  I get that bhsn has a lot of high hipes but south isbactually ranked higher in the ifca poll.   This town sooks .

It wasn't a great start to the season for CI teams with the conference going 2-4 on opening night. There were a couple of big surprises though.

Bloomington North at Mooresville - Anthony Lindsey's head coaching debut at North got off to a really rough start in their 30-27 loss to the Pioneers. North's experienced squad look more like an inexperienced JV team in the first half with fundamentals lacking, and especially in the first qtr where they found themselves in a 20-3 hole right out of the gate. Turnovers and numerous penalties got them behind the 8-ball and they never could quite dig themselves out of the hole.

Columbus North at Decatur Central - The Bull Dogs were extremely impressive in huge road victory over Decatur Central which was in the 5A state finals last season. I don't know the specifics of the game, but once CN took an early lead in the 1st, they never looked back, and DC never really challenged after the Bull Dogs scored first.

Bloomington South at Columbus East - With 17 new starters and opening the season on the road, Coach Gabe Johnson had to be pleased with the 27-6 win although there are still quite a few wrinkles to be ironed out.  Soph QB Duncan Combs and junior RB Braylen Townsend were the offensive leaders of last season's unbeaten JV team, and they picked up where they left off in their first varsity starts with Combs going (unofficially) 15 for 23 for 130 yards and two TDs with one pick, while Townsend rushed for 192 yards on 25 carries. As expected, South's kicking game was superb with kickoffs going into or out of the end zone, and Bryce Taylor was 2 for 2 on FGs with a 53-yarder.

Terre Haute South at Plainfield - The Braves opened last season with a 32-13 loss to Plainfield at home and started this season with another loss to Plainfield on the road although the game was more competitive, losing 31-27. THS had a huge advantage in the stats with 432 total yards in the game while Plainfield had 220 total yards, but three picks by the Braves did them in.

Roncalli at Southport - The Cardinals were the only CI team to open at home but it made no difference as they fell to Roncalli 37-13. The Cardinals fell to Roncalli by a similar score last season so the outcome of this game was not unexpected.

Terre Haute North @ Northview - As they did last season, the Patriots opened the season against Northview and it still ended up with a similar result, losing 34-20, although the score was a little closer this time around. The Patriots have now lost 14 games in a row dating back to the 2022 season.

I’m really looking forward to the Columbus North games on September 13 (Roncalli) and 20th (at Chatard).  My thought is that it will tell us a lot about all 3 teams.

The artesians demolished the bnl stars. Bedford while not known for football have been having better teams in the last 15 years or so. Wouldn't know who to pick in this one.

I don't know anything about the expectations at BNL but as you indicated the Arties really took it to them, 50-7. Frozen Tundra at the Hoosier Hills Conference thread, put BNL at next to last in his conference preseason prediction with Jeff in last place. Here are some Arties stats from that game in which the Arties led 29-0 at the half and BNL's only score came in the 4th qtr.

Arties senior QB A J Reynolds was 15 of 19 for 229 yards and 4 TDs with one pick.

Arties senior RB Austin Pryor picked up 187 rushing yards on 18 carries and one TD.

The Arties ran 52 plays to 35 for BNL, and had 27 1st downs to just 7 for BNL.

South with 17 new faces facing the senior led arties who lost to south handily last year have that revenge factor and the distant rivalry  with home field. Hope they put together their best game , south needs to see some real good play so they can get tested and improve. I'd like to see this one but doubtful I'll make it. I also preferred the years when they played martinsville week 6  . Prob be too hot next week the forecast is 90s as far as I see 7 days.l forecast.

Mooresville has picked up Connor Cruz at QB. That is probably a big difference maker. A couple of years ago our CN freshman team picked up a game against Mooresville. It was a battle. I imagine they have some pretty talented Juniors now. Could be interesting to see how Mooresville does throughout the season.

These are the next two games we are really excited for. Roncalli is down quite a bit but you always have to give a program like theirs respect. It will be interesting to see how their new coach pivots.

Chatard is not the team from last year either. However they still have some dudes.

If North can impose their will on both these teams then there will be some heads turning.

Everyone out there is saying that Roncalli is down quite a bit (at least the geniuses over on the Indiana High School Football Facebook page…and they’re generally, at best, low grade imbeciles…lest anyone want to know my opinion) but I have my doubts.  Year to year scores aren’t necessarily a great measure but they did just beat Southport on Friday by a similar score as the past 3 seasons…and Roncalli was legit those last 3 seasons.  I’m always going to assume Roncalli is a top 5 or 10 in 4A until they show otherwise.

Chatard may not be the undefeated team from last year (who, I think, ended the season in Sags Top 5 or 10 overall) but they will be solid….and a legit test….like most every year.

Yeah. I don’t give any credence to the Southport score. I figured they got a solid lead and put JV in.

Chatard plays some tough games in the next few weeks. Roncalli and Cathedral before they see us. They have a really good schedule.

I saw a tweet (X) that Cruz was hurt late in the game. There was no follow-up post on that, so I don't know if it was minor or something a little worse.

Two stops for North. 3rd down at the 1 with QB Connor Cruz hurt. 4:57 left

Week 2 in CI:

Bloomington South and North are both on the road for a 2nd straight week, with Southport the only other team on the "road" although their game with Perry Meridian will be at Southport with the Cards the visiting team. On paper, three teams (Bloom. South, Terre Haute South, and Southport) seem to be in competitive games, while the other three are in games that promise to be blowouts or close to it.

Bloomington North (0-1) @ BNL (0-1): BNL got blasted on their home field by Martinsville, 50-7, last week and they will be facing an angry Cougar team after they played a miserable first qtr against Mooresville last week and played catch-up the rest of the game, falling short. I expect this game to have the mercy rule being in effect at some point with BNL getting blown out again. JH's prediction (North 49 BNL 14)

Columbus East (0-1) @ Columbus North (1-0): The Bull Dogs steamrolled preseason 5A No. 1 Decatur Central on the road, 41-15, while Columbus East stayed within striking distance of Bloom. South at home until the 3rd qtr when South started taking control with their running game. The Olympians had a 4th and goal at the South five-yard line early in the 3rd, but failed to convert and that seemed to take the air out of East as South controlled the game from that point on in a 27-6 win. This is a crosstown rivalry, and East might stay close for a while, but like with South, will probably run out of gas as the game progresses. This game may be a blowout. JH's prediction: (North 45 East 3)

Bloomington South (1-0) @ Martinsville (1-0): The Panthers go on the road for the second straight week and face a pretty good Artesian team in a game that promises to be close. In their season opening game on the road, the Arties ran all over BNL with senior QB A J Reynolds and senior RB Austin Pryor having big games, while in their game with Col. East, South was led on offense by soph QB Duncan Combs and junior RB Braylen Townsend having big games. This game will be a better judge of where both teams stand going forward. If it comes down to the kicking game -- advantage South. JH's prediction: (South 31 Martinsville 17)

Floyd Central (0-1) @ Terre Haute South (0-1): Floyd Central makes the long trip to Terre Haute after losing their season opener at home to Kentucky powerhouse, Louisville St. X, 56-14. Despite the loss, the Highlanders are expected to be among the top teams in the HHC this season. Terre Haute South opened their season at Plainfield and lost 31-27. The Braves had a big statistical advantage over the Quakers and doubled the total offensive yards over the Quakers, but they threw three picks in the game which was the difference in winning and losing that game. I see this game being a close, competitive game. JH's prediction: (Floyd Central 38 TH South 35)

Southport (0-1) @ Perry Meridian (0-1): PM is the host team on Southport's field. Both teams are coming off poor seasons last year with PM going 2-8 and Southport going 2-9. In their head-to-head matchup last season, Perry Meridan blasted Southport, 40-10. Both teams lost big in their season opener, so this is a big chance for one of them to get an early win in a season where wins will in all likelihood, be few and far apart for both teams. Despite PM's blowout win over the Cards last season, I think this game will be both close and competitive. JH's prediction: (Perry Meridian 45 Southport 17)

Mooresville (1-0) @ Terre Haute North (0-1): There's not much you can say about this game since on paper it looks like a blowout win coming for the Pioneers. Mooresville got a big opening season win at home against a favored Bloomington North, 30-27, while TH North lost on the road to Northview, 34-20. The Patriots have lost 14 games in a row, and it looks like they are headed for 15 games in row after this Friday. This game may start the 2nd half with the mercy rule in effect. JH's prediction: (Mooresville 59 Terre Haute North 0)

I think that the Floyd vs Terra Haute South game will be the most competitive.  It came down to the wire last year or the year before.  Terra Haute South lost a few key players but returns a lot.  Floyd lost a lot of players but still has some talented and experienced personnel.  That long trip to Terra Haute is a killer though.  We have had teams that underperformed partially because of that long trip.  It can make teams come out cold.

It’s hard for me to get a read on Terre Haute South because I don’t know how good Plainfield is. That was a close loss to Plainfield and the Quakers ended up getting ranked in one of the polls as a result. However, I’m not sure they get over .500 this year so was that really a good loss for the Braves?

Meanwhile, you have Floyd Central who lost in typical blowout fashion to one of the top 5 teams in Kentucky in Louisville St. Xavier. Whether it’s St. X, Male, or Manual, it’s become a tradition for the Highlanders to take a whooping every year from a Louisville powerhouse or two. A 56-14 loss to St. X this year and a 52-13 loss to them last year despite FC going 8-2.

Toughest game of the week to pick for both the CI and HHC threads. Could come down to the final seconds again like it did last year on a neutral field at BNL.

Columbus North 49 - Columbus East 0

Either the talent gap in Sectional 8 has closed, or Decatur Central was way overrated to start the season. Regardless, this one might have a running clock to start the 2nd half.

Terre Haute South 35 - Floyd Central 14

Terre Haute South is an extremely underrated football team this season. A lot of playmakers on offense and Division I talent. I expect this one to be a wider margin than expected.

Mooresville 42 - Terre Haute North 6

Terre Haute North definitely improved but Mooresville is just a better all-around program and team.

Bloomington North 38 - Bedford North Lawrence 14

Bedford got pummeled against Martinsville, I do not think they have much of a shot against Bloomington North.

Martinsville 31 - Bloomington South 28

I will take the Arties in this one. Should be the Game of the Week in Conference Indiana.

Perry Meridian 20 - Southport 14

Despite looking completely uncompetitive against FC, Falcons should have more talent. This sectional should be split up next cycle, no matter what happens.

@ptr BTW,   I don't mean to criticize Coach Johnson I think he is a very good coach. I just wonder if he thought that maybe he should play his olb's up at the line . When I played we played the 5/2 defense with both olb's at the line of scrimmage. I know it's a different era but just i just would have liked to see if it would have worked.....  Anyways till next week.

Good point. Coach Johnson is a good coach and we can take it to the bank that he will reevaluate everything after going two games deep into the season. Like it is at every level of football, opponents copycat and will be looking/scouting the weaknesses so we have some tweaking to do. He has been rather conservative with Combs at QB and he may want to open things up like he did in the 2nd half of the Arties game. The secondary is the biggest problem right now, and I don't know if there is a quick fix for that other than getting more pressure on the QB.

Week 2 results in CI:

Bloomington North 45 Bedford NL 0 - North grabbed an early 14-0 lead and never looked back in getting the shutout. BNL is in for a loooong season, and may not win a game in the HHC. Jeff was thought to be the team most likely to finish last in the HHC, but they already own a win over Seymour. I didn't see any stats on the game.

Columbus North 42 Columbus East 0 - I don't have any details on this game but I do know that the Olympians got an early pick on North and that was their highlight of the game for them (I believe.) A blowout was pretty much expected in this game and that was what happened.

Martinsville 41 Bloomington South 35 - This was expected to be a close, competitive game and it was as South snatched defeat from the jaws of victory at the end of the game. South scored with 44 seconds left in the game to take a 35-34 lead and then let Arties march 80 yards down the field in 26 seconds for the winning score and South couldn't do anything with the remaining 18 seconds. It was a young South team against a veteran Martinsville team and the Arties triplet seniors on offense in QB AJ Reynolds (19 of 27 for 207 yards and 58 rushing yards with two picks), RB Austin Prior (18 carries for 107 yards) and WR Hunter Stroud (9 receptions for 78 yards and 44 yards rushing) probably accounted for 95 percent of the Artesian's offense, with a big o-line helping the cause. South was led by soph QB Duncan Combs who was 14 for 20 for 143 yards and one TD with no picks, while junior RB Braylen Townsend had another big game with 30 carries for 196 yards and four TDs (one TD receiving.) South learned a lot from this game going forward and Martinsville will have a good season, but being in the highly competitive Mid-State Conference, just how good of a season remains to be seen.

Perry Meridian 42 Southport 7 - I thought this game would be close but it followed the same pattern as it has in recent seasons with the Falcons blowing the Cards away. The Falcons will still struggle to win games this season, but they still got their annual win over Southport who accounted for one of the Falcons two wins last season.

Terre Haute North 36 Mooresville 32 - I doubt few if any saw this game result coming except maybe folks at TH North. I don't have any details on the game except that Mooresville had a 20-0 lead early in the game and then proceeded to get outscored 36 to 12 by the Patriots the rest of the game. TH North snapped at 14-game losing streak dating back to the 2022 season.

Floyd Central @ Terre Haute South - Game cancelled and went down as a no contest.
