Week 5, we are halfway done...

Covington @ South Vermillion - Valiant effort by the Trojans to comeback last week and try to make things interesting. Visors handled business and look to do more of the same this week. Are the Wildcats on cruise control to WRC title now? SV 44 Cov 8

Fountain Central @ Attica - Last week was maybe the only hope for the Ramblers to get one in the WRC. Mustangs held on for dear life to get Herb #200. I think #201 will be a little easier to come by. FC 35 Attica 7

North Vermillion @ Riverton Parke - Falcons look to rebound after stinking it up against SV. Panthers appear to be hitting their stride. Homecoming in Mecca. RP 38 NV 14

Parke Heritage @ Seeger - Woolfs had some fun picking up a win last week at Attica. The Patriots did not have fun being RP's punching bag. (First home loss to RP ever) I still think Seeger is the better team in this matchup. We'll see how they respond. Seeger 27 PH 13

Time for the Squirrel to make his picks for the week. 2nd Place showdown, Homecoming in Clinton, Potential Upsets.

Covington @ SV- SV showed they are the best team and no one in the conference can touch them. SV 55 Covington 12

FC @ Attica- Win Streak starts for the Stangs FC 42 Attica 6

PH @ Seeger- Seeger is not good and PH has the momentum, honestly I like the woofs this week in an upset. PH 24 Seeger 21

NV @ RP- Game of the week in Mecca. Will NV bounce back or will RP have a chance to claim the crown next week. This game is gonna come down to the trenches and I think RP is better in that category. RP 34 NV 20

This week, I got-

The Visors busting the XXS Trojans

The Ponies stampeding the Rumblers

The Mel Gibbies declaring independence from the Woolfs

The Panthers eating some Falcon roadkill for homecoming.

visors simply have to finish the season injury free, and they should be wrc champions in week 10. hoeever I think they still have their toughest game on the schedule left to play. this topic comes up every year, but will sv get tired of runing the table against 1a teams just to get bounced in their sectional?  i think south vermillion could do really well with a linton model where they play a tough independent schedule that includes teams like linton, sullivan, northview, etc.  get battle tested and prepared to make a deep push.  even if you lose a couple times, you are better for it. does running clocks in 7-8 of 9 games prepare you for a sectional that features 2 of the qop 10 teams in 2a?  I think i just made my score prediction for this week. running clock to start the 3rd.

with foxworthy back under center, this matchup has lost all of the intrigue that the jamboree created.  mustangs seemed to right the ship somewhat.  regardless of the second half comeback by covington.. mustangs found a way to win.  congratulations to coach king on #200.  will get 201 this week by however many points they want.  i was sad to see attica not even score.  i thought that was their best chance for a win all season.  @GroundSquirrel said it best.  hats off to those kids and those coaches for FIGHTING every week.

game of the week. will the mecca tavern be providing concessions with their food trailer?  i could go for a tenderloin. I made it out to the sectional championship game at rp a couple years ago and it was quite the environment. people were just lined up all over the fence.  would think it would be a similar environment.  The job rp has done over many years has been impressive to watch.  i've mentioned before that rp is my darkhorse candidate to win the wrc this year. they have to win the next two fridays to do that. rp usually likes to control the clock but with as explosive as they've been this year I wouldn't be surprised if they are actually losing the time of possession battle this season.  there are worse problems to have.  how will nv respond this week? only good thing that can come from a loss like they took last week is how you respond the next week.  we will see.  john harrells says rp 31-21

woofs at seeger could be a nail biter.  both teams looking for wins in the wrc that aren't against attica. Who is the interim head coach for parke heritage? I imagine they are doing whatever they can this week to be 2-0 as the head coach.  how many teams in the wrc have played under an interim head coach before? could ph end the year as the winningest Interim hc of them all? i'm going to take the visitors 32-27

Ohh doltsy. Who do you think in the Tenderloins North’s Side? Just cause John Harrell says something doesn’t mean it’s state law.

Not sure I like the geographic fit, but that would probably make the most sense if they ever tried anything different.

Similar sizes and a step or 2 up in competition. Even when the WRC had 3-5 legitimate strong programs it’s not enough to prep for a deep 2A run.

No disagreement, I just don't think the travel distances are a super easy sell. Maybe they aren't that bad, I haven't sat down and done the math, but at first glance they would be very out of place there.

Either way, Coach Barrett and his staff have done a great job over the past few years!

does lintons care about the travel distances?

they might as well get use to it considering the travel distances they are about to have for there sectionals

Wasn't SV in the SWIAC before? Can't be much worse travel distance than that

Attica, FC, NV, Rockville were all top 15 years back, with a few top 5s at one point. PH even got into the mix for a couple years. WRC had potential to be strong enough competition for a good 2A run at one point.. just nowhere close to that anymore

They were in the Western Indiana Conference, which looks worse on paper, but they also have utilized division play for several years, which mitigates that issue  a bit.

Conference travel distances are an issue for more than just football.  It is easy to get siloed in this regard, but unless South Vermillion was to go independent for football only, as Linton has done, considerations must be made for sports who have travel through the week, not just on Friday nights.  There are, of course, ways to minimize that impact (scheduling of baseball and softball doubleheaders for example) but still, schools would prefer not to have kids out super late on Tuesdays and Thursdays any more than they have to.
