Week 1 Picks

Martinsville at BNL: The Artesians lead the all-time series 24-4. The Stars pulled off the upset in the season opener last year 33-15, giving them their first win over Martinsville since 1992. However, the Artesians got the last laugh when they ended BNL’s season in the sectional championship 49-35. I feel like last season’s surprising 8-4 record was a one-hit wonder for BNL. I think they’ll struggle this year. Martinsville wins by at least three touchdowns.

Columbus East at Mooresville: Second ever meeting between the Olympians and Pioneers. Mooresville got the best of East in a 12-0 game in Columbus in 1989 for a sectional championship. Both teams have new coaches. East’s is implementing a new offensive scheme with a new QB (a junior) while Mooresville’s coach is the son of a legend, Mike Gillin, who retired from there after last season and is #3 all-time in wins in Indiana history. Casey likely provides some familiarity and is able to build off what his father built while East will need time to perfect their new system. I have Mooresville by a couple touchdowns.

5A #9/#10 Floyd Central at 3A #2 Gibson Southern: First ever meeting between the Highlanders and Titans. Both teams lost some key players on offense (including the QB) and on defense. However, Gibson Southern always seems to reload rather than rebuild as head coach Nick Hart has built an incredibly successful program. Throw in the fact it’s an hour and 40 minute bus ride for Floyd Central and that’s a bad combination. Could be closer but I’m thinking Gibson Southern by at least ten points.

Jeffersonville at Lawrence Central: First ever meeting between the Red Devils and Bears. New head coaches for both teams. I’m hearing from some folks that Lawrence Central could be a surprise this year. Time will tell. Nevertheless, I’ll take them over Jeff by 30+.

2A #8 Providence at New Albany: The Bulldogs lead the all-time series with the Pioneers 27-24. The rivalry was reinstated last year after a seven year hiatus. New Albany had won four straight prior to last year’s 49-14 defeat en route to their first ever winless season. Tall task for new head coach Marc Clark to get the program turned around. Providence is an established power at the 1A and 2A levels and I think they win by at least two touchdowns.

Seymour at Greenwood: The Woodmen lead the all-time series with the Owls 4-2. The road team has won the last three games in the series after the home team won the first three games. Both teams have been less than impressive recently and I’m doubtful that changes this year. My gut feels like it could be a close one. My head says picking an HHC team in a non-conference game is a bad move. Therefore, I’ve got Greenwood by a touchdown or less.

Well I was planning on going to the East at Mooresville game with a buddy tonight but he had to back out because he and his family are moving tomorrow. I’m unable to drive right now due to an injury so I’m going to have to wait until next week to attend my first game of the 2026 season. Looks like I’ll be listening on the radio and following along on social media for scores of the other games.

Pretty sure this is the first opening night since I was probably in 2nd-3rd grade, I had older brothers playing, 53-54 years, that I haven’t been at a Football game. And believe it or not, I’m looking forward to sitting on my fat ass listening on the radio. Hey man sitting on the back deck with a bottle of Makers and a nice cigar ain’t all bad either.

For me, it feels so wrong to not be able to go to a game tonight.
