I’d say by the time we see them late in the season, they should be pretty tough. What all does Gibson have this year? Who are the players to keep an eye on? We play you guys pretty early.

HPG interview with new Mt. Vernon head coach Brad Higginson. Question 1 How would you assess your football team's overall improvement during these past 30 days of team drills camps and competitions? We have made great strides as a team during the past 30 days. We have kept everything in house as far as competition, but we did get a chance to put on shoulder pads and have some physical practices and learn the standard of competing. We have spent some great time in the classroom learning the X's and O's of football. We have sharpened our skillset, football IQ, and cleaned up some scheme issues. The players have hit the weightroom hard at the same time and continue to build that toughness and strength we will need to compete in the PAC Big School Division. Question 2 Who are some individual student athletes that have used this summer preparation period to improve their overall game and put themselves into position to contribute heavily this fall? Gavin Schu who is an OL/DL type player has been a great leader and pushed himself and others to compete at a high level. He has emerged as a player to watch this year for sure as a Senior. Saint Henderson has been flying around the field as a RB/TE/LB. He is picking up things quickly and is always playing at high speed. He is another player to watch in our area because of his size and speed at his position. He has been to some camps this summer and turned some heads at multiple levels as a Junior. Eastin Hall is a workhorse for both Offense and Defense. He is smart and powerful. He is going to be our goto guy in the mix for energy and expectations to win as a Senior. He holds the players accountable and pushes the culture to another level. Ryan Lilleston is a great athlete that will contribute a lot on Defense. He is a smart player, and we will put him in the position to make some in game adjustments. He has been working hard in the weight room and film room to be a leader on the field as a Junior. Question 3 As you look at your current roster, where do you see position groups of greatest strength and others with opportunities for improvement? I would say that our OL room is going to be one to watch. We have made great strides the last month up front. We have size and strength and that is a great start to establish a tough and physical mindset. With the stable of runners behind them, we as coaches are excited to see how they continue to progress into the season. Defense will be fixed on the middle core of the group. The LB/Safety group will be big and athletic which will allow us to use multiple styles of play throughout the season. We will have be able to tackle at the point of attack and be physical in the pass game to force takeaways. Question 4 What are your top priorities over the next 30 days in terms of final preparations relative to getting your football team ready to hit August camp fully healthy and with plenty of positive momentum? Our priorities will be to continue to add to the playbook to learn as much as we can in the first part of August. We have to continue to work with the players on getting them as healthy as we can be going into Week 1. We are excited to scrimmage another team to get a better feel of our progress from the Summer work we put in. The momentum is in the newness of the Culture of our Program and expectations for the season. Question 5 What are the roadblocks and challenges standing in the way of your program reaching its full potential this fall? Our roadblocks are the heat and dealing with the adversity of playing with high temps and getting everyone on the same page. We are working with other programs to make sure we have complete access to what we need to train and practice at the optimal time and not be limited due to the weather.

Not sure I agree with all of this. Although Memorial will be very good (always are...as a P&P should be)....what made them VERY good last year was the Defense. 8 of those guys are gone. Digging deeper in the defense, the really impressive part was the linebacking crew. Jake Brackett gone, Connor O'Donohue gone. Best corner gone, both safeties gone, 3 DL gone. On offense the RB gone, top 2 WRs gone and 2 OL gone. I will say this about the Offense, Dockery and Anslinger were very good (Maybe with Anslinger it's his double dose of South Gibson DNA)....honestly Dockery kept Memorial in the GS game Offensively. I understand that players like these grow on trees at a P&P but still....taking the leap to say "BETTER" is a big leap. What could make them look better though is that the only competition in the South will probably be Lawrenceburg....GS has a long way to go....but might make a little noise.

This Senior Class beat Louisville St Xs Freshman team by 3 TDs a few years ago. They didn’t lose a game together for 4 seasons. Yes, they have a WR moving to QB. But he was probably the most talented QB on the roster. Their starting RB runs a 4.47 40. Their OL is big. Their WRs are pretty athletic. I do like their team this season. I don’t expect to beat GS and Memorial. They’re better programs. I was just asking a question. Lol. I’m aware that GS is a powerhouse. You’re not fooling me.

This could be quite the societal discussion. It could be argued the higher percentages of German heritage in the south and Polish heritages in the Northwest in those blue areas could also be a factor if just looking for correlation. But ultimately, I believe it is good coaches that can make a program is the primary factor. If they have a stable or growing community geared toward service and involvement that can feed a tradition, that gives them a playing field above other communities that may be stagnant or dwindling. Catholic communities don't have a monopoly on such environments, but I believe the data would show they would be skewed on the demographic spectrum toward the more stable and supportive families and communities. Then adding in the the random genetic athletic roll of the dice from year to year, you can get sometimes get greatness when you were already good. Just looking at the historical results of the southwest blue counties in your map, I would say Gibson, Perry and southern Spencer are opposite sides of the tale. In the 70's/80'searly 90's, I would consider South Spencer and Tell City as perennial strong programs, while Gibson Southern over all was not. The opposite is true now. I would say observing first hand, coaching changes was a big influence in that and coupled with those areas also having the opposite stories in regards to the population retention or growth, it paints the picture. Meanwhile, north Spencer and Dubois county communities keep moving right along consistently.

IU football is at the top of the mountain, but staying there is the challenge. They are recruiting at a level never seen in Bloomington and they have conquered the transfer portal like nobody else has. Scary times for the rest of college football…

Not going to be able to stop it, we don't have to worry about though.

I have already heard from local Gibson County folks that you're looking good with the new faces. And the projected QB will be throwing the ball all over the place.

If you want to try to connect the match ups of last years games with who you return. FC beat Evansville North 15-10 in Sectional. Memorial beat them 21-0 last year. FC beat Castle 49-14 in Sectional. Memorial beat them 37-7 two weeks prior. Memorial will be better this year. Memorial has some spots to fill this year, but I think the key area to see who steps up is 2 to 3 spots in the line rotations on OL and DL. I think everywhere else will be as good or better than last years team. They return a lot. Quite a few, relatively speaking, sophomores started and contributed a lot of minutes on last years team. You'll have plenty of games to watch by the time week 8 rolls around to see where they are.

And the sectional champion in four of those six season was from the SIAC.
