Watched the game on ESPNNews. They had the camera behind the offense the whole game. I saw a LOT of McCarthy to make me think he will be the steal of the draft at that position. his ability to move in the pocket and knowing when to take off and run were impressive. The most impressive play though was in the first quarter. He dropped an absolute dime on a long pass play. It was a vertical route by the outside receiver. The CB was actually in a decent position, but that ball dropped in to the WR's hands and the CB had no chance to make a play. It was really something.

Nowlin, you will likely be saddened to hear all the talk in Chicago is about Caleb Williams. I am not sure it's an upgrade from what you get with Fields, but a new offensive staff may be what JF needs. Williams may come to you a little cheaper, but I have doubts about him as a pro.

Harbaugh is in a can't lose position. If he stays, they compete for another title. With the right team, he could turn it around quickly. I think he does want to match his brother, especially considering he was on the losing end of that one.

I think a number of analysts would agree with you Irish.

I agree with your comments about Harbaugh...his brother nipped him when they both took their teams to the Super Bowl, and that has to sting.  John seems to be in a good position to be a contender for another one this year.

Belichick interviewed with Atlanta again....thoughts about him coaching the Falcons. Not sure why he would want to jump in a situation without a proven QB.

We'll start with the biggest story regarding the Colts so far in early 2024,  the owner:  https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/columnists/gregg-doyel/2024/01/18/jim-irsays-ongoing-addiction-fight-means-giving-up-control-of-colts/72270415007/

    Thoughts?

Very sad for any individual to be 64 years of age and can't handle this demon.  In this case, a 64 year old billionaire.

While I feel for him and his battle with addiction, I would hope the NFL would demand that he hand over the keys until he can demonstrate he is healthy and on the right track.

  3. The young man is definitely a winner...no one can claim otherwise.  And I think he probably considered an outstanding leader.  It would seem his stock has risen after the title game in which some draft analysts are now saying he will go as the 4th QB taken at the end of the 1st round.  Based on that, I agree with Bobref...his stock will never be higher and makes sense he would declare.

What has me scratching my head a little is I thought he was ok during the national championship game, but it was far from his best.  His long run backed up down by his own endzone was probably his best play of the game.  But the NFL is now all about the passing game, and I am not sure his game best aligns with the pure passing skills needed.  Now, perhaps the experts see his potential development, similar to a Jordan Love.  I am not sure.  Harbaugh's endorsement as the "best ever" at Michigan does say something.

I guess time will tell....seems like a young man of outstanding character and is quite the leader.  Hope he is successful at the next level.

Any speculation as to what teams may use their draft pick on him?

Agree. No one can blame the guy for taking it. I've just seen many good careers go south going from one gig to another. Doesn't really matter from a monetary standpoint. Charlie Weiss is a good example of getting rich from being a lousy head football coach. At the end of the day, good coach or bad coach, they all end up with one hell of a retirement.

You make great points...sometimes the gamble works out....sometimes it doesn't and it would have been better to stay in "your own backyard".  DeBoar had certainly moved the Huskies forward and kind of had it made there.  A gamble for sure.   I had circled the Washington at IU game next year because of him...now not so sure, although I believe Washington made a nice hire of the Arizona coach...who also turned that program around.

I do think DeBoar has more experience as a head coach than Weiss given his time as Fresno State, Washington and then prior at smaller schools.  Weiss had pretty much been a coordinator at the pro level (outstanding O coordinator) and jumped straight into a head coaching job at a major place before working up.

Time will tell about DeBoar....Saban came over as a SEC coach....DeBoar is definitely an outsider to the SEC.  The question is can he recruit and retain players.

Jim Harbaugh reportedly meeting with Chargers.

Looks like he did indeed interview....

A couple of more spots may open up with terrible playoff performances....Dallas and Philly.  Going to get interesting.  Michigan is also working on an extension that I can only guess is extremely lucrative.  Will boil down to how badly he desires the NFL.

Guess Belichick interviewed with Atlanta and assume he will be in demand as well, presenting a little competition.  Seems like a number of Raider players are pushing for their interim coach, Antonio Pierce.

You've got to admire a guy who is willing to accept a challenge like that. The $10+ million a year probably doesn’t hurt, either. Washington will always be a red-headed stepchild in the B1G. Now he’s at the marquee school in the marquee conference. Guy’s definitely got some big ones!

I agree with your comment Bob.  That is a job that had he passed, he would have probably always thought "what if".

Wasn't a walk in the park for Ray Perkins when he succeeded the Bear. But he had the first losing season for Bama since 1957.  Regardless, his next assignment after Bama following his resignation wasn't bad....he certainly moved on.  I think DeBoar will be just fine.  I like his hire of Wommack....glad to see him focus on D.

You dropped “sanctions”, lol.  You try so hard to play innocent after called out on your nonsense.

Coach shut down your other thread due to your hypocrisy after you whined about being picked on/called out.

(Oh yeah, you’ve also now misspelled his name twice.)

Sanctions are an absolute possibility. Again, you don’t need to defend them.

You couldn’t be more wrong. Just move on…

    At least you’re consistent.

Over 120 players have forgone eligibility and declared for the NFL draft (including TWO from CENTER GROVE) and you make a thread about JJ and Harbaugh.

Waking up with the champs on your mind daily again…

We will see how long this one lasts before you get reprimanded by @Coach Nowlin who sees through you just like I do.

    You are one sensitive individual.

He’s a QB…and a very good college QB. Thus the discussion.  I’m not sure his passing abilities and other tangibles translates to a NFL game. Additionally, I think it’s more than a fair question to ask if he is making this decision based on possible knowledge his coach isn’t returning.

That being said, I see a variety of thoughts as to where he will land in the draft. Some I read have him as the 5th QB taken…others not as optimistic.

As far as your comment about what Coach sees in me, well perhaps you can elaborate.  But here’s some advice, just refrain from commenting if the discussion upsets you…Don’t get butt hurt or feel you were put on this earth to defend the honor of each and every Michigan football player and/or coach. Zero malice or negative intent for JJ McCarty. SMH

The irony is the "tyipcal" Bears fan who would argue about a roof is the person who will tell you "Bear Weather" gives them an advantage. Yet, they never win big games in "Bear Weather." Whether it's Arlington Heights or somewhere South of Soldier Field near the old McCormick Place, I think they'll go with a roof. They're going to want a Super Bowl and Final 4's. I know a Super Bowl worked in Indy and NYC, but on the shores of Lake Michigan in the middle of winter without a roof? No shot.

I totally agree.  The NFL has changed so much.  The NFL I grew up watching was so much about the run game, and loved watching "Sweetness" run wild at Soldier Field, Chuck Forman for the Vikes at the Met, etc.  where inclement weather was truly a benefit to those teams.  Today, the game is so different, facilities have changed, and certainly the emphasis on passing is so very different.  I just think what used to be a possible advantage for Chicago is now no longer an advantage..its become a detriment.

You are also spot on about these facilities being used for so much more...Super Bowls, NCAA Final 4's., etc.  I think having a closed option stadium in Chicago will hurt Indy when it comes to hosting Big 10 football championships.  I know its being opened now to consider other cities as I'm sure Detroit, Minneapolis and perhaps cities now out west want a piece of the Big 10 championship pie....a closed option stadium in Chicagoland I believe puts them at the top of the list.

Lots of advantages moving forward with a new stadium for Chitown....and I think its only a matter of time.

  10. 3 hours ago, Boilernation said:

Anyone hear Warren's presser from that day? He does not sound like someone committing to building a new stadium in Arlington Heights. Seems more interested in doing it in Chicago. Perhaps buying Arlington Race Track could also turn into a real estate investment for the Bears if they can use it to convinve the City to play ball with them on a new downtown stadium.

They need to do something to either get off the lake or put a roof on one if they stay close.  Hard to get a throwing QB excited about playing there now in the weather, especially in today's NFL.

Good topic. Here are some thoughts:

    1. I believe we are headed to a similar format as England soccer, which uses relegation to move teams up and down. The haves and have nots with NIL money playing a huge factor will only make the separation worse

    2. I believe 20-30 teams are now relevant at the highest level, most of which are either in the Big 10 or SEC. Who wants to see Indiana vs Ohio State, Vanderbilt vs. Georgia, etc…

    3. I am of the belief now that the bowl games need to go away other than the 12 teams that qualify to play for a national title. So many players are opting out of playing in a meaningless bowl game, prime example is the Georgia 63-3 shellacking of Florida State. There were other bowl games that were affected as well

    4. I believe the current system will fall apart within 5 years and who knows what will occur going forward. NIL payments are the final coffin in our current system

Regarding relegation and promotion, the model you reference from the EPL is a professional league.  Where would a team be relegated to?  FBS to FCS? FCS to Div II?  Power 5 to a mid-major conference?  Such a model would destroy conferences and the conferences are for sports beyond football. Curious as to your thoughts.

Regarding the teams that are currently relevant...doesn't that in many cases change over time?  How many years prior had Georgia won a national championship prior to them winning a couple of years ago?  Alabama was on a drought before hiring Saban.  Washington hadn't been at this level in a long time before DeBoar.

No bowl games?  So mid-majors are just out of luck?

I agree with you about NIL....or at least what it has evolved to.  I though NIL was to compensate athletes for using their name, image and likeness.  Somehow, its ran to upfront $$ like a contract, regardless if the institution uses their name, image and likeness.  To me, its went way beyond what we were all sold about NIL.

Now the tripping call definitely looks like an error. The official was fooled somehow and had the wrong team/player doing the trip. That happens. Unfortunately nobody else saw it to take him off the call. I haven't had a chance to watch a version of the video I could slow down to see if there was some other action that could be considered tripping (I don't believe there is). This is what would actually be considered an officiating error and one big enough that it alone could keep an official from a playoff assignment.

The reason why you see officials defend other officials is because most of the time the calls fans and media think are horrible errors actually are correct or at worst tight judgement calls.

As for the actual requirements of reporting, this is possibly where the rule and philosophy may be slightly different. I've only seen articles report the requirement but not seen the actual wording of the rule. The video the NFL shared mentioned both but not sure if they were saying they both had to be done or they both are valid methods. Either way every report from the rules experts and former officials has said the signal is most commonly used. Most of the time you just see the lineman turn around in the huddle and swipe his chest and that seems sufficient. Based on the video 70 was not close enough to the R to verbalize his reporting so there is no disagreement there. But the R clearly responded to his signal considering it reporting. If that's not what 70 intended it's now on him to get that clarified. The R has no idea he's wrong and no idea 70 isn't going to line up in an eligible position at this point.

At the end of the day, you are making an educated guess.  In no way shape or form did I insinuate the official deliberately did anything.  But he is human....with 70 reporting several times earlier, it is absolutely possible he heard 68 report, looked up and saw 70 running toward him and assumed it was him.  Absolutely a decent possibility.  That's all I am saying.

The article I shared with you was from NFL.com regarding the need for both verbal and visual reporting.  If that article was incorrect, I would have expected the NFL to correct it.

Well, the old adage that cheaters never win is wrong.  Sometimes they do.

That's a fact and NCAA football is a dirty business.  But hey, Jimmy said they are "innocent" last night, so there you have it.  Time to move on.  Sure hope he does as well.....

    https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/39270452/jim-harbaugh-michigan-overcame-field-issues-knew-were-innocent

Despite a three-game suspension to open the season after an NCAA investigation into alleged recruiting violations in 2020, followed by a sign-stealing scandal and the subsequent dismissal of staff member Connor Stalions that led to another three-game suspension, Harbaugh said the Wolverines were never rattled.

"It went exactly how we wanted it to go to win every game," Harbaugh said Monday night after No. 1 Michigan defeated No. 2 Washington 34-13. "The off-the-field issues, we're innocent and we stood strong and tall because we knew we were innocent. And I'd like to point that out.

"These guys are innocent. Overcome that ... it wasn't that hard because we knew we were innocent."

They absolutely do make mistakes. Most of the time those mistakes are caused by not having the best angle or getting fooled by what they saw. The only fault in this situation is if the R noticed there were 2 other players approaching him after he ruled 70 as the player reporting, he could have stopped to ask them if they had anything to add. But he never saw them or acknowledged them so 68 should have realized he never completed his reporting. And 70 clearly should have seen the referee point to him to acknowledge his signal. Detroit was intentionally trying to create confusion so they knew they weren't clear in what they were doing. But it is 100% on them to make sure the R knows who is reporting so the officials can correctly officiate the play. The R could have slowed down and possibly saved the Lions from their clumsiness and officials often are able to recognize and do that. But you can't fault them for something that is ultimately the responsibility of the team to execute clearly.

Perhaps...if one goes back and reads my comments, I don't excuse anyone...but when it comes to human error, I can see where both sides need to own this.  I too have watched the video's over a number of times.  The official absolutely could have seen 70 (as he saw several times earlier in the game) and assumed he was reporting again WITHOUT actually hearing his report, which has been pointed out is required.  70 has stated he never verbally reported.  If he is being honest, then there was an error on the official's part by assuming 70 did verbally report.  Do the Lion's players ultimately own the reporting...sure...no one is arguing they don't.  But that doesn't mean the official did not err as well, and I am simply pointing out this possibility.

After being on this forum for a long time, I understand the mere mention of a possible official error would lead to responses from you and Bob.  Kind of like death and taxes, it was a certainty.

BTW, that wasn't the only error/controversial call during the game......so it indeed happens from time to time.

You really are the gift that keeps on giving…you’ve revisited this thread (that is now 20 pages long) that YOU created 5+ months ago that continually gets bumped to the top of the forum just to share your level of “outrage” about a “cheating coach/program” which you have no affiliation or rooting interest in.

How long have you been a member of this site?  Did you bring this same level of energy to all of the cheating programs in the southeast and at USC/Ohio State who were openly paying players for years before it was legal or do you cherry pick your outrage and was iPhone 14 footage your final straw?

Harbaugh HAD to sleep with your ex girlfriend or something.  At this point there is no other rational explanation.

I can only imagine you in your living room Monday night…stabbing your Harbaugh voodoo doll and pretending to be some sort of Michael Penix fanatic because he graduated from IU.

No one forced you to read or comment on this thread.  No one.  Just walk away.  Just walk away and stop acting like you need to defend Harbaugh.  Trust me, he's good with people's opinions.

And yes, you did make a homophobic reference about Grover and myself, and you've twice made comments about Harbaugh and my wife.  At least the quote above only references an ex-girlfriend.  After 3 of such references, I am beginning to better understand your fetish.  Those type of comments define you.
