Lofty expectations? Are you familiar with why that season was awful? Saban wanted the Dolphins to trade for Drew Brees when it was clear the Chargers didn't want him. The Dolphins execs didn't want Brees and instead gave Saban an injured Daune Culpepper who never recovered and went on the IR a few weeks into the season. Saban is on record as saying he knew once the decision was made to take Culpepper over Brees (despite his wishes) he was going back to college.

    Excellent reminder....

People forget there is a massive difference in the college vs pro game.  Not many have started in college and transition to a HOF NFL coaching career...exceptions such as Vermeil, but not a ton.  Bottom line, no coach is going to be successful in the NFL without a quality QB...especially in today's NFL.

The latter is why the news about the LA Chargers now in play for Harbaugh is so interesting.  They have the QB...and that is the key first piece.  Additionally, they may be open to giving Jimmy Boy more front office power without a GM in place.  This one will be interesting to watch.  He just may be headed back to Cali...SoCal this time.

I just can’t with you anymore dude.  You know the sport and you almost had me until you tried to cite bowl games results as an indicator of schedule and conference strength.

It isn’t the 1990s anymore.  OSU played without its two most important players and had zero motivation in the Cotton Bowl.

I mean if we are gonna play this game, let’s at least be consistent and not cherry pick.

A Maryland team that gave Michigan everything it could handle just went out and throttled an Auburn team that Bama needed a miracle to beat last month.

Do you know how ridiculous you sound or are you just being purposefully dense at this stage?

You want Michigan to lose so badly tomorrow so you can get on here and take some sort of victory lap and somehow validate all of your garbage takes on this thread.

Did Harbaugh date your wife when he played for the Colts in the 90s?  Something is off here.

Then simply shut your mouth. The issue was you embellishing Michigan’s opening 3 opponents when we were discussing McCarthy’s stats earlier vs later in the season.  You go with rambling dissertations about nothing in general. Just blowing hot air. We get it…you are nothing more than a Wolverine and Harbaugh butt sniff.

Sad part, I’m a big 10 guy..but got choose between a cheating program vs Bama. Not a great choice.

Enjoy the game…and try shutting your fat mouth when it comes to making comments about wives, you keyboard coward.

But Ricky (purposefully) attempted to paint a narrative with his slick use of the term “resigned” even though Stallions missed the MSU game.  I simply pointed out that the back half of the schedule was more loaded than the front half and you shifted the goalposts in another attempt to disparage and support the ridiculous/irresponsible graphic posted by CBS.

Stats look a bit different if you include the MSU game, no?

1186 yards, 5 TD’s 1 INT with a 73% completion percentage once that one is added in.

Its open season on Michigan/Harbaugh right now and everyone nationally is piling on and clutching their pearls.

We agreed the back half of the schedule offered a higher degree of difficulty for Michigan. But then you attempted to embellish the first part of their schedule by stating Bowling Green and UNLV played in bowls. Big deal. They are programs that Michigan should run over and you know it. The first 3 games for Michigan offered very little for the Wolverines in terms of competition for non-conference games. Would have liked to seen them challenge themselves a little more, but worked out for them. The way Penn State and OSU played in their bowl games doesn’t overwhelm most with Michigan’s overall schedule this year

You are doing your homework in crayon apparently then.  You’re all over the place and you seem to have an obsession with Harbaugh with “tinted” glasses…

Harbaugh’s players and fellow coaching staff members love him by the way.  You and the click hungry screwballs in the national media just can’t help yourselves.

The discussion was Michigan’s first few games this season and your attempt to make these programs look stronger than what they are. UM rolled East Carolina, UNLV and Bowling Green as they should have…with or without Harbaugh. All are mid majors period.  No shock Michigan QB put up good stats against those teams. Stop trying to deflect and change the topic of the conversation.

  5. 5 hours ago, temptation said:

Did they though?  I mean it wasn’t murderer’s row but ended up being more respectable than first thought.  Bowling Green won 7 games and UNLV 9.

And you knew exactly what you were attempting to do when you shared the tweet, which is framed in an irresponsible way I’d also like to point out.

Though Stallions did not resign until the bye week, he was not on the sideline for the game against Michigan State because he was suspended.  So had the graphic included that game and been titled “with/without Stallions” I would have a tiny ounce more respect.

The MSU game was JJ’s best game of the year by the way.

    21/27, 287 yards, 4 TD’s…

Have folks really shifted the goal posts from “Michigan knew other teams’ offensive signs” to “their quarterback, benefited from the sign stealer, recognizing the defense that the opposition was in and relating it to the quarterback?”   Come on.

All of those ridiculous photos that hit social media where Stallions was standing next to the defensive staff yet I haven’t seen one that shows him next to Sherrone Moore.

The media has gotten desperate at this point and it’s just downright pathetic.

Do some homework on this catapult sport story that is breaking slowly and report back to me.

I do as much homework as you, just don’t wear rose colored glasses jock sniffing my favorite team. You can’t have it both ways…you claim QB stats are down because of a tougher schedule at end, then try to defend quality of first few games. For Michigan, they were cupcakes and you know it. So stop arguing because you are bored.

It’s almost like the back half of the schedule was loaded with better teams, huh?

Played 3 of the top 4 defenses in the country in the last month.

    I shared a tweet. That’s all.

But we do agree…UM opened up with a cream puff schedule….during Jimmy’s first set of games suspension.

I would argue what Kelly did at Notre Dame with his resources was equally, if not more, impressive than what Saban has done at Alabama. Saban is a good coach for sure. Again, Top 25 is a compliment.

Ok…if I follow your logic about Kelly, then why hasn’t LSU been a lock for CFP the last 2 years?  Saban also won a natty at LSU…in either his 2nd or 3rd year at the school.

I’m not knocking Kelly…just don’t see him at the level of Saban. Please know I’m not in any way a Bama fan or a Saban guy.

  8. 1 hour ago, BTF said:

I'm sure there are 25 coaches out there that could do the same thing with the talent that he had. Top 25 is a compliment if you consider the number of college football programs sits at over 830.

    But they haven’t, so….

He obtained that talent over the years by resurrecting and sustaining a top tier program in arguably the toughest conference. You make it sound like a walk in the park…

    5 hours ago, BTF said:

All this being said, how can one claim that Saban is a better coach than Brian Kelly given what Kelly did over a ten year span at a university with high academic standards. I've been saying for years that Nick Saban might be one of the best 25 coaches in the country. It's hard to say he's top five given the advantages he has with top tier talent.

Kelly has absolutely no excuses now when it comes to academic standards…

When has Pike ever been a thought in Indiana high school football, maybe back in the 40's & 50's ??

Derek Moyers had some excellent years at Pike during his tenure.  14-1 in 2007 with their lone loss to Carmel in the state championship. 7-3 in 2008, 9-2 in 2009, 9-3 in 2010, 9-4 in 2012, 7-5 in 2013 (as previously mentioned). In the 2009 and 2010 eras, I remember a couple of excellent WR's...both I believe went to Univ of Cincy, with one of them really making a mark.  I am sure other players on his rosters that played college ball.

To me for the past 10 years it was all Georgia and bama and now we have those teams you mentioned now competing

Georgia won last 2 years.  Their prior championship was 1980. Since the CFP, you are correct that only Bama, UGA, Clemson, LSU, and Ohio State have won championships. Perhaps a select few will be added into the equation. But the “football rich” schools will continue to seperate themselves under this equation.

Please don’t lump Michigan in with that group.

They are undoubtedly a football rich school.

As someone who has no allegiance to any fbs team I like it as the powerhouse teams can’t stockpile talents and it’s has made cfb more competitive.

Can't stockpile talents?  I think its just the opposite. Schools like Texas, Bama, Ohio State, Michigan, etc. have the opportunity to further distance themselves as they can pour more money into their NIL pools than the majority of schools in their conferences and especially from the mid-majors.

Arch Manning made $3.2 million last year as a backup QB for Texas.  That's more $$ than some starting QB's in the NFL.  Majority of schools cannot use that type of money to incentivize recruits to come their way.

  12. Great topic......

I think most of us would love if some of the higher rated Indiana HS players (recruiting ratings) would stay in state vs leaving.  I guess they need a compelling reason to stay.  Fact is that its tough in this state with so many big time programs within a 5-6 hour radius.  Throw in NIL money, and ease of transferring, I understand why the highest rated players "take their shot".

Hopefully, IU and Purdue can build more consistent and sustainable programs.  But I can't help wondering if HS recruiting is taking a back seat to the portal now anyways.  I truly think coaches are now looking there first. (or at least equal)

BTW, when did it become a bad thing for a kid to accept a scholly at a mid-major program such as the MAC?  Perhaps getting on the field as soon as possible may be he smartest thing one can do...while maximizing a free education.  Congrats to any player that earns a scholly!!

My issue isn’t age discrepancies. I’m more concerned with young undeveloped necks supporting young undeveloped heads, with an additional 3 pounds added to it. Football also requires a certain amount of mental maturity to play the game and 56’ers struggle with it, much less younger kids. I understand younger kids don’t hit hard enough to hurt each other. Yes you’ll get the odd kid falling wrong, I get all that. I think there’s enough evidence that there could be a link between CTE and other brain related diseases and repeated trauma to the head. The info’s out there, I’m not here to debate it, just stating my opinion.
Quite possibly the larger issue is how many slow developers do we lose because they were out in a no win situation, get the shit knocked out of them and say screw this. If you’ve been involved in youth Football for 10 years I’m sure you’ve seen the 4th grade runt that grows up to be an all conference lineman. I’m sure you’re also aware of the 4th grade phenoms that never even see the field or play in HS.

I’m interested in growing the game. If we don’t adapt, and I feel like the NFHS has done a great job with recent rule changes that moves us in a positive direction. I am not advocating for banning tackle football under 7th grade. I feel like we’re at a place where we can still accomplish the fundamental skills we need without full contact in 56ers, and if the powers that be see fit to do such a thing, I wouldn’t be mad about it.

I guess I am a data guy....I go off injury research and what I have seen through my years of youth football coaching and youth football admin. (BTW, you don't need to use the word "if" regarding my experience)  I am not reading nor have I seen a higher incidence rate of head injuries with youth football.  I do see people responding to emotion.  Safety is a massive focus on our particular league and has been for years.  If you have data specific to youth football that show strong evidence of higher rates of head injuries vs other sports with no head protection, thanks for sharing.

Absolutely there is a risk of kids that don't enjoy the game as a youth and choose not to come back.  If was no different back in my day as a player and our son's,,,but that risk occurs at both youth and middle school levels.  There is still absolutely size and skill separation at middle school...sometimes even worse as physical maturity is highly variable at the middle school level.  Yes I have seen the stud youth football player that doesn't lead to the young man being a strong varsity player and vice versa.  I have seen that occur in all sports....that isn't isolated to football.

Our league teaches and monitor's techniques to reduce head injury potential....they are taught the correct way as a child that carries with them as they grow in the game.  Habit building is a critical attribute.  It may be different in your area, but for years middle school football coaching in our area was suspect when limited to teachers coaching.  That has strengthened over the years with coaching coming outside of the particular schools.

We do very much agree on growing the game...perhaps different paths to get there.  But in my neck of the woods, there is no doubt our youth football program has grown the game and is a critical variable into the high school program's success.  I am just looking for hard data to eliminate this valuable opportunity for kids, and not just an emotional "warm fuzzy" for adults that would push to take it away.

  14. Indiana represents well for a state of its size.

Here is where the Top 40 are committed.  Perhaps this year isn't its strongest class.  Many are heading to the MAC, but the Power 4 schools also took some players.

Not sure on your age analysis but physically there’s a hell of a difference between 2nd/3rd graders and 7 graders.

Yea, I’m clearly in the sit at home on the coach camp. Unbelievable!

Been associated with youth football for a decade plus. I understand the physical differences between 2nd graders and 7th graders. But they don’t play each other and I have to hope most responsible leagues have age appropriate divisions. Younger kids aren’t typically bringing the force of older kids. I get all leagues aren’t the same when it comes to coach selection, development and safety, but some coaches I’ve experienced at the middle school level have no business being on a sideline. The same with equipment condition and kids being fit properly at middle school. I just don’t prescribe the game is safer for middle schoolers.

I have not seen a high incidence of head type injuries during my time associated with youth football and injuries in general not out of the norm with other sports.

But hey, I respect your views. As stated before, football not meant to be everyone’s game.

Young men today don’t play football for a variety of reasons. Many because it’s too hard, which is exactly why young men need this game, because it’s hard.
That being said if tackle football were to be restricted to 7th grade up, I wouldn’t be mad about it.

Curious....what makes the game safer at 12-13 vs 11-12?  Feels like a false comfort.

I'd hate the thought that kids would be denied learning the game itself and what the game teaches you until middle school so people feel more comfortable.  There is so much competing for a youth's attention, and love of the game can start much earlier than 12 years old.  If there is truly a quantifiable risk/safety issue,  (I've read many studies that conflict) then why wouldn't we push for the same restriction for other sports, such as girl's and boy's soccer, competitive cheerleading, etc.  As Temp says, what is the risk of kids sitting on the couch as home??  It is not zero.

    Just my opinion.

He's going to have to compete if he wants to play at the B10 level. He's not there yet. I'm much more impressed with Cherry as a prospect coming out of high school than I was with Tayven. IU added a one year rental this year at QB so should be some healthy competition next in two years for the starting job assuming Tayven wants to battle.

With Rourke, it would seem IU has their QB for next season with his one year of eligibility.  Gives Cherry a year to learn, acclimate and perhaps be in the hunt his soph season....but again, more talent will keep coming.

My opinion (not worth a ton) is that Tayven and Tyler are very different QB's....I think Tayven could run a RPO better, where Tyler that big, strong, tall pocket passer...very accurate.  Will be interesting the type of offense Cignetti will run.  I assume he will adjust based on the attributes of his chosen starter.

I just saw the list of IU receivers...with transfers from Ohio, (Rourke's teammate) Texas Tech and Wake Forest, to go with their current receivers.  Looks like a pretty darn strong group, based on the transfers performance last season...all massed over 1000 yds receiving.
