Listen, FSU’s schedule and conference sucked. Period. There is no argument to be had about that. Compare that to the grind Washington had or Alabama or Georgia. FSU wouldn’t have sniffed 13-0 and you know it. 3-4 losses at a minimum

    Lighten up Francis....

I guess it depends on which rating service you believe...if you follow ESPN as Corrigan quotes, FSU did have the easiest schedule at #55.  But UGA and Michigan were at #37 and #35 respectively and that difference is not that different. Oregon came in at #52.

If one subscribes to College Football News, much closer with FSU at 14, Texas 12, Washington 10, Bama 4, Michigan 3.  To put in perspective, Oklahoma 21, Florida 18, Oregon 17 and ND 13.

If Sports Illustrated is your preference, FSU 78, UGA 63, Washington 54, Michigan 51, Bama 31.  Additional perspective, Oregon 96, Penn State 89.

In 2 cases, Oregon's schedule was weaker, and in the other almost the same.  Would you had an issue had Oregon beat Washington and won PAC 12 had they been in the CFP??  I bet not.

FSU was 2-0 over SEC teams, neither at their home stadium.  The ACC won the series schedule over the SEC 6-4.

How in the hell Noah Coy from CG didn't get the top WR i have no idea.  97 Rec 1,417 yds 21 TD's.  They don't want 2 kids from the same school???  Make it make sense...

Great question?  His stats above against the level of competition he played against as well.....

Did the young man from HSE have better stats?

I hope it was not because they didn't want to award 2 kids from the same school or because he's playing baseball at ND.

Florida State did everything they were suppose to do and got screwed. Absolutely true. I feel bad for them. Do I think they are one of the best 4 teams in the country? No.

Isn't that the point of the discussion....should the playoff teams be selected for on the field play and what they earn or what a group of people (with bias) "think" are the best matchups?

  4. Good read about FSU's snub and I understand his view about Washington......would have been nice to give the PAC 12 their final Rose Bowl.  Can argue Washington earned it.

    https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/39033710/cfp-anger-index-unpacking-outrage-florida-state-snub-2023

Then we moved to a four-team playoff, and the whole point was to eliminate the hypotheticals and let a champion be crowned by the actual results on the field. If you won your games, you had a chance to win a national title.

Turns out, all of that was a charade. None of it mattered. The games are pointless. What happens on the field is less important than what a committee thinks might happen in a future matchup.

It is an absolute slap in the face to every player who has ever put on a helmet, laced up cleats and marched onto the field to battle for a victory, because a bunch of folks in a conference room in Texas decided their sacrifice was not as important as the Las Vegas line on a potential playoff matchup.

    It's a joke.

Let's be real about what happened here: The committee members couldn't leave the SEC out of the playoff. They didn't care that Alabama needed a miracle to avoid a loss to 6-6 Auburn two weeks ago. They didn't care that Georgia's own injuries -- playing with a banged-up Ladd McConkey and Brock Bowers -- likely played a large part in why the Tide won Saturday. They didn't care that the ACC has a winning record, head-to-head, against the SEC this season. They didn't care that Alabama beat 2023 Georgia, not 2021 or 2022 Georgia. They cared that Alabama and the SEC had to have a spot in the playoff by birthright. And as a result, they sent a message that what happened on the field -- the blood, tears and sacrifice that players made all season to win every game on their schedule -- was less important than getting the most compelling TV matchup.

But hey, there'll be a 12-team playoff next year, so all is forgiven, right?

Without following the logic, I will say I think Texas is the best team of the 4 in the playoff. And I also do think they are better than Georgia.

That's fair....I do not, but being a long time married guy, proven wrong more times than not!!

What would you call North Alabama? Southern Mississippi? Throw in about 6 brutal ACC teams and it’s a wrap. Damn, I don’t like Alabama or Texas, but crap, they both would hammer FSU. The quality of FSU conference is flat out bad. One of the reasons Notre Dame gets called out for their scheduling they play 5 ACC teams a year. Worst power 5 conference out there and it’s not even close

    Well said

Yes I stated that either in this thread or another thread. Difference is the ACC conference stinks while the SEC does offer some pretty good opponents. Bama also played Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, and LSU

ACC had a winning record against SEC opponents this season. This was not the best year by far for the SEC.

Best conference top to bottom this season was the conference dissolved….

The CFP is not an NCAA championship. It’s an entertainment venture. Their charter says the goal is to get the 4 best teams in the country, so as to maximize the entertainment value of the events. Given their objective, I think they got it exactly right.

If I follow this logic, do you really believe Texas is better than Georgia??

I’ve been clear on here before…I don’t have a basement.

Just a guy trying to get by and survive while making a difference in the lives of children…

While taking jabs (feel more like mosquito bites honestly) from bitter old “accountants” on a high school football message board.

    Somehow I manage.

Lol…so now I must be an accountant. Learn something new everyday.

Glad you feel you are making a difference…why allow others to pat you on your back, when you can do it yourself?  Very special….

    This is my guess too.

Agree… really feel for Florida State. One key injury makes history. First undefeated conference champ to miss the playoffs. Just doesn’t feel right, but understand it…

Perhaps…just seems like something a 12 year old would say in a debate with his friends at the lunch room/cafeteria after gym class.

    Lame.

….kinda like you on this forum from your basement?

Let’s be honest…if Cignetti would have left it at Purdue and Ohio State sucks, you would have been just fine  But you got your panties in a wad because he included your favorite team.  Take a breath Karen.

Heck, if Cignetti was honest, he would have said those cheating turds at Michigan suck!

If you want to see Elliott, can see on ESPN tonight at Idaho in FCS playoffs.

Speaking of Ro Elliott, he rushed for 91 yds on 17 carries and 2 TD’s and a couple catches out of the backfield for Southern Illinois in a tough 20-17 OT FCS playoff loss against Idaho. I believe his final collegiate game.

You’re so far gone it’s sad at this point.

Yeah...I am good with your statement.

I could care less if Cignetti states your favorite team sucks. I will state again, I just hope he doesn't get suspended 6 games during one season for multiple rules violations.  If you consider that statement as far gone....I will happily live in that world.

Just like prime.  Asking his players to walk the plank and cash checks he wrote.

    Gone by 2026.

Hilarious comment from a Michigan fan.

Hopefully, he will run a clean program, resist cheating, represent his university with integrity, demonstrate the highest levels of integrity and fair play to his players and stay on the field avoiding suspensions for being a cheating hack.

He may well be at IU longer than Jimmy boy at the land of Walmart Wolverines.

If the kid scored 60 touchdowns this year...probably not many. Should a young man be punished because his conference is weak. He did his job.

Burton won Mr. Basketball by scoring 30ish points per game...and the NIC is not the top basketball conference in the state. Sometimes, players can supersede the uncontrollable limitations around them and perform to a level that is again undeniable. If this young man was on CG and put up 30 touchdowns...we would still be talking Mr. Football.

I think he has surpassed those type of limitations so much so, that he is for sure a strong candidate for the award, he may not win it, but he is in the conversation that is for sure.

Perhaps.....but the weekly competition might have also taken its toll.  Hard to predict.  But he does seem like a talented young man.

I think sometimes being from a big school and a top program at the 6A level doesn't always help.  I think some prefer the awards go elsewhere......Also being from the same area can also hurt....candidates can cancel each other out.

Folks still confident its forthcoming and the NCAA investigation rumored to be finishing up this month and the NOA submitted.

Only wrench (a good one) I could see holding it up is if Jim wins the national title on January 9th and moves on to other goals.

Don't tell the national media that though.

Seems Bears and Panthers getting more serious.  The cheater's days are limited in Ann Arbor.

I've said this before, and David Bell was AWESOME, but you could seriously make a case that Romeir Elliott was the best player on that Warren team. At least the most impactful. He rushed for ~3100 yards, 38 TD's and had another 200 receiving yards and 3 TDs. You won't find many 6A backs who play on an undefeated state championship team with those kind of stats who didn't win Mr. Football. I'm not even sure he was considered.

agree completely.  I thought he pulled some votes....guessing he and Bell took some away from each other.

His Southern Illinois profile below.  He went there over Western Michigan and Ball State.

Just for clarification I never stated Cherry or O'Neil haven't won State Championships because both of them have (Cherry 2022 and O'Neil 2021). I was stating had they made it to the State Championship this year. The reason I state that is because I feel both would have had terrific games in the passing game against Crown Point (similar to the big game Ringer had in State Championship), thus bolstering their argument for Mr. Football. It is not so much "winning" a State Championship as it is getting to a State Championship having a good game and statistics to impress the voters. Some of them tend to forget certain players when they don't get to see them in that final game, and I am not saying that is right or just either. Like it or not that is how it tends to go, I never can predict how the voters think when voting.

There have been 13 of the 30 Mr. Football winners that have not won a State Championship. I too felt Yeast should have won his Senior year, but I don't have a vote in it. I feel like the reason the player won it in 2016 was because he was committed to Clemson, but that has just been my opinion.

Mr. Football winners who did not win a State Title: 1992 Alex Smith RB Franklin County (lost sectional championship to East Central, broke career rushing record), 1995 Earl Haniford QB Martinsville (lost in Regional career passing record), 1996 Isreal Thompson RB Martinsville (lost in Semi-State), 1999 Derrick Ellis RB Arlington (lost in Regional), 2000 Otis Shannon RB Cathedral (lost in Sectional 2nd Round Career and Season rushing record as well as single game), 2002 Clayton Richard QB McCutcheon (lost in Sectional Champioship career passing record), 2008 Morgan Newton QB Carmel (lost in thrilling State Championship game vs CG), 2010 Tre Roberson QB Lawrence Central (lost in State Championship game), 2011 Gunner Kiel QB Columbus East (lost in Semi State), 2014 Markell Jones RB Columbus East (lost in Semi-State single season and career rushing record), 2015 Brandon Peters QB Avon (lost in thrilling Semi-State to CG), 2016 Hunter Johnson QB Brownsburg (lost in Sectional Semi-Final), 2022 Drayk Bowen LB Andrean (lost State Championship game).

You original post did not indicate state championship in 2023. (see below)  That is what confused me.

While I agree the award is "supposed" to focus on only their senior year, I think it human nature for voters to look at a larger body of work.  I believe in the Yeast case, it haunted him that he only had one year of playing high school football in the state.  I believe that was a major factor in why the Indiana Gatorade HS football player of the year didn't win Mr. Football.

I am not saying anyone is undeserving in 2023....actually, I've never stated that about anyone winning the award period.  I just don't believe winning the state title should be considered as a key criteria.  A plus...I guess...but we all know it takes more than one person to win a state football championship.
