What concerned me most was the wind forecast. ND is an east-west field, and early forecasts had winds from the west at 10-20 mph. Two teams that like to throw the ball would have been limited for two quarters. Thankfully the hourly forecast now shows the wind dying down by game time. Still in the 20s, however.

There are some sophomores and freshmen making big contributions fot LuHi this year. Hopefully they'll get a chance to play in the 2A tourney as upperclassmen. Until then, they'll just have to play where they are.

Moving up won't change the ICC schedule. The nice thing about being in the best small school conference in the state is that it is never boring. Maybe the most impressive stat for Lutheran's senior class is that they never lost an ICC game!

Valpo University, absolutely. Valpo high school, maybe not.

Hypothetical Neutral Site Semi-States
kdets89 replied to HoopsCoach's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
1A Lutheran/North Decatur: Option 1 - I don't mind the Greenfield Central location, but I'd rather let North Decatur keep the concession revenue. Option 2 - Franklin Central is .25 miles from LuHi. Not really a neutral location. And I DEFINITELY would not favor letting FC keep the concession revenue from a game between two 1A schools. -
We're in year 1 of the current cycle. One more year before teams move.

Instant Replay for the Finals?

The scope of this discussion is the state finals. That's two days. Six games. Adding a replay official is not going to break the IHSAA football committee's budget. -
Instant Replay for the Finals?

I just don't understand the hesitation. Assume that the added capability of replay, properly utilized, is a net benefit to the championship game. Is that a wild assumption? The work of implementation is agreeing to what "properly utilized" means. The cost of implementation would be just the tech to utilize the existing camera angles, and maybe another game official in the booth. Even if the net benefit to the championship games turns out to be small, it would have no effect on the rest of the tournament. It's only if the net benefit is determined to be large would there be a push to deploy it in the earlier rounds. As for the "slippery slope", we're already over the edge. Nearly every coach already has access to in-game replay on the sidelines. That's proven to be such a valuable coaching tool that it's not going away. The only change will be to make it cheaper, faster and more reliable. That we don't allow officials to use it during the game is ridiculous. -
I don't understand the JH prediction for this game. I understand it aligns closely with the Sagarin rating (which would make it even closer than 11 pts). But watching both teams, I don't see Sheridan keeping up with North Decatur. The Sheridan running back is a load, but he's nowhere near as fast as Tri's big running back. And Sheridan doesn't have nearly the passing game to keep up if North Decatur stops the run. I've watched so many North Decatur games, that I admit to no longer being objective. I've become a big fan of the Chargers. Their defense is fast and fun to watch fly to the ball. I like their passing game, and am a fan of the QB who also makes a two-way impact as a defensive end. I love the fact that the QB is named Carson Parmer (for a kid born in '05/'06, I can only assume his parents are Bengals fans). The only way Sheridan keeps this game within 11 points is if they have a defensive tackle named Kimo von Oerhoffen!

Instant Replay for the Finals?

In that case, why play the championship game at LOS? How much expense could be avoided by extending the home/away criteria beyond the SS game and just providing the away team with a travel stipend? Why hire a third party to broadcast the games? Just repackage the stream already in place (Indiana SRN, Berne Witness, Summit City Sports, etc.), or simply don't broadcast it if there isn't a stream in place. The championship game is different. The incremental step from no replay to replay requires little cost. This isn't like the weeks after the 2014 1A championship when the GID debated the possibility of additional crew members on the field requiring a significant change in mechanics. We're talking about using an existing broadcast stream, and allowing an official to overrule the crew on the field when warranted. Progress over perfection. -
Instant Replay for the Finals?

Quite the comparison. If I was a Pioneer coach in the 2014 1A finals, I'd be in favor of replay for the championship game. -
Instant Replay for the Finals?

My opinion would be different for all rounds prior to the finals, for all the reasons you bring up. Even though the IHSAA claims ownership of all tourney images, they're simply repackaging what previously existed at the sites. There's too much variability in image/network quality for it to reliable before the finals. -

Aren't there already observers from the zebra community in the booth for every game? Would it be a stretch to add replay to their duties? If you define what can be reviewed, surely this would be possible. As for tech, the only additional cost would be the equipment required to deliver the images already being captured in broadcast quality by at least four cameras to the sideline. Surely the cost of this spread over six games is would not be an obstacle. -
Instant Replay for the Finals?

Last year, each participant in all six class finals had some form of replay on the sideline. As a 1A school with no money, we found a way to make even the cheapest replay system deliver two camera angles, despite the challenges of delivering video over WAN in an NFL stadium. There are no significant obstacles to replay, other than deciding to deploy it. -

Sect 47 Lutheran 35 Covenant 0 Halftime -
In each of the last two years, the Sagarin predictor had Lutheran as 28 point favorites. One TD game, for (2021) and against (2020). To claim LuHi fans have Covenant PTSD might be a bit dramatic, but not far off!

1A South: Sect 45 - Sheridan has been running over teams lately with their big back, and that should continue against Hagerstown. The run will end with a sectional title, as North Decatur awaits them in the regional. The Blackhawks have some athletes, but not nearly as many as the Chargers. Sect 46 - The title game occurred in the first round (Tri), the second round (Milan) was a challenge, but the third round (Knightstown) will offer a nice break for North Decatur. JV players will see their last signifcant snaps of the year. Sect 47- Forget the JH prediction (49-21, LuHi). This game will go one of two ways: 1) a one-score game favoring whoever has the ball last, or 2) Lutheran triggers much Facebook angst by hanging 80 on the Warriors, throwing deep for the last two scores. Sect 48 - Rooting for Providence in this one, but think Tecumseh is simply meaner. Tecumseh's #25 looks like he's 5 years older than everyone else on the field. Should be a good game.
