I still feel that if the Indy Mayor had called Irsay’s bluff, the Colts would have stayed, and the city would be much better for it, buuuuuuuut noooooooo. I think Buffalo is in the same spot. The town holds all the leverage. St. Louis already let the Rams go….and the Cardinals before them. No way a team gets any deal from that town. There are not really any other decent sized markets left for the Bills….that I can think of.

I am actually shocked to read this. In 29 years of coaching, my experience is that football coaches are the only ones to tell kids to do other sports as well. As far as the ones who do the opposite, I would say it's a dead heat with Basketball and Baseball. In one building I was in a coach that had resigned said the one thing he was proudest of is that he had kids playing basketball 12 months a year. While some baseball coaches help with football or are fans, the ones I have known want their kids to do as much baseball in the Summer as they can. I know kids who play or played about 80 games in a Summer; WAY too many. And while some encourage other sports, they discourage them from football. Some of those baseball coaches actually see the Summer as an extension of the Spring season. I don't. I say it is the start of the next season because the seniors that graduated are no longer on the Summer teams.

Knowing the kids in our building who are in this club, it appears that the marching band has suffered the bigger loss than any other sports.

Well put.........sometimes, the "less is more" mindset is actually true. The dramatic increase in time commitment has had an impact on coaches for years now, as many have chosen to walk away from coaching; and you are likely right; kids know the time commitment involved and are just not willing to commit the kind of time necessary to be a part of a program. I would add in that there is a common thought among football coaches; if we cut back on the time commitment for football, the other sports will take that time to expand their programs; and we could lose kids to them. Not sure there are any simple solutions now. Even if restrictions increase for football; there is not a club season like basketball and baseball have to get around IHSAA limits.

OK...some of things apply to some schools while some things don't............ but something else to consider with the small towns; over 90% of Indiana's counties saw a drop in population. As far as the labor market; if kids are working on a family farm or working for cash, they will not show up in that stat.

There are a few things at play here. Fewer kids drive than in years past; so getting to and from events is difficult. We have a number of students who will hang out at a fast food place or gas station near the school after school lets out on Friday, in order to be able to go to a game. Not many are interested in that. In large urban areas, you get kids from different parts of town attending schools in communities where they don't live or have little to no connection to. A long stretch of little to no success for a program. More kids have jobs; including kids that play a sport. It is common for kids to miss practice because they have to work....have even seen kids miss games because they have to work. Many that do work are helping pay the bills in the home. If they are not working, they have to be home to watch younger siblings so a parent can work jobs with hours after school. What last season taught many, including adults, is that there are other things to do on Friday nights. Other distractions. As Bash stated, some kids would prefer the competition the gaming world provides than actually doing the physical work. That also keeps some from just attending as fans. As far as communities where participation is high for fans as well as numbers in the program; several things factor into that as well. Many current students are 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th generation to attend the same school. Along those lines; communities with just one high school often see better numbers in programs and attendance at games. More kids are able to drive or get to games. Peer pressure.....in smaller communities; if a kid wants to hang out with his friends, he does what they do. That may mean being on a team. At the very least, it means go to the game. Program tradition, or even a run of recent success.

lol...ok I agree with the talent level thing and yep, two weeks in a row against sub par competition is concerning. Another close game should sound the alarms. I said after the FSU that the game plan was the issue. I do not have the Peacock app, so cannot judge that oe, but sure sounds like it was an issue here as well.

Irish fall to 14th in the rankings. I would say that is about where they belong at this point.

Interesting names. My guess would be with the names mentioned that the places where they currently reside might look to renew/upgrade current contracts.

I just posted at the same time in the college football season topic. Funny reading the comments. Urban Meyer’s name comes up a lot. Not that he would leave at this point, but bad timing on the part of USC. Had they made this move when they should have, they could have at least been able to talk to Urban. While it should attract some attention, not sure who would follow through.
