I see, still a good accomplishment though, those Myers boys are big

I agree! It’s an interesting read if you look at Pioneer league. Athletic scholarships were going to run finances into the ground. It was either go non-scholarship or lose football all together. I think the league is in a good place since going that direction.

Nick Sheridan was IU’s QB coach at that time.  So it’s not surprising that he wouldn’t have been too familiar with a prospect who wasn’t a quarterback.

QB coaches recruit more than just QBs. Several tapes sent to Sheridan and staff. Several times Combs was mentioned to Sheridan while recruiting Lindauer. It went in one ear an out the other. The final comical comment was at Memorial when he looked at Hurley and asked what number is Combs.

Well, I can’t speak for Ball State.  The coach I talked to is in the B10.  He was well aware of both Combs brothers.

Nick Sheridan had to ask Memorial coaches what number Combs is. That was after Hurley asked him what he thought about Branson on tape. I guess we can eliminate IU as the team you spoke with.

So it wasn’t that he was unnoticed.  This coach knew Branson well.

Ball State had no idea who he was until state game. Had zero interest in him. Soon as state game ends he has an offer and a coach from there trying to get him to flip  from SIU.  I’m guessing if they felt he was undersize or not fast enough that wouldn’t have changed after state game.

Rory Heltsley capped his HS career off with

    99 receptions

1751 yards (1st in Indiana, 3rd in US)

24 TDs (1st in Indiana, 2nd in US)

….Still no stars….but he does have a profile on 24/7 now listing his offers….so maybe he’s getting some long overdue attention

Branson Combs had 3 offers. Ball State, Southern Illinois and a D2 school in Missouri. You won’t find a more dominant football player on both sides of the ball.
4 year varsity starter on both sides of the ball. 247 didn’t have a profile or star ranking for him. Finished career #2? all time in receiving yards.  Look at his career stats on both sides of the ball if you want a head scratcher. Not to mention back to back trips to state and arguably the best player on the field each finals game. Throw in 1st team all siac in 3 sports. Freak athlete!
    They don’t care about numbers.

  6. I think there will be a QB battle in summer camp for Memorial. Fisher looks poised and ready to be QB1. I think if that happens Caleb will move to WR/RB/DB. Memorial staff has proven in the past they don’t need a featured RB to win. RB by committee w good athletes. I expect Memorial to be back in sectional finals again with a chance to make a run. There’s a handful full of athletic kids in that freshmen class that will make a difference right away……of course depending on how dedicated they are to summer football and not travel baseball will help them be ready by August.

I believe they should be considered.  But obviously the senior season is the most important.

Brady’s season alone has more than enough merit though.

I even forgot to put in there that Brady went 11 games with 42 passing tds before he threw an interception….I really should have included that because WOW….that has to be a record of some sort….how many QBs in Indiana have thrown for 42 TDs in a season….let alone without an int during that stretch….and then to add 16 more TDs on his way to winning it all? Just super impressive.

Probably hurts the others cases if we say it’s only the senior season because this year was magical

    Memorial QB 2018

    3858 yards

    51 tds 7 int

    512 rushing yards

    12 TDs

25 post season TDs.  21 passing 4 rushing.

Writer for Indy newspaper thought it would take 2 state titles for him to win it. Finished 3rd behind Kizer and Bell

Curry and Brady have to be 1 & 2 and not sure what order. Both deserving.

I still don’t understand how a defender can pull off an opponent’s helmet on a tackle - and still the player has to go off for a play.
If it’s a player safety issue, I don’t see why the tackler is allowed to grab the helmet with no penalty.

Happened in 18. Memorials QB helmet yanked off by kid from WL going for strip sack. I think it ended up being 2nd to last play of the game he had to sit.

Has GS played in Lucas Oil before? I seem to remember some PAC schools playing a regular season game there in recent memory. Against North Posey maybe?

I’m pulling for the Titans but the logistics of this week show how much of a disadvantage the southern schools are for the state finals.

Losing a full day of recovery and prep with traveling to Indy last Saturday and a Friday game this week.  Monday meetings - Coach and captains attend and have to high tail it back for practice. It’s a 7-8 hour commitment if you want to practice at LOS during the week. Trying to figure out if an early start Friday is better than traveling up Thanksgiving night for a hotel stay.

None of the things affect Indy schools like Brebeuf this year and Chatard last year vs HH.

Here’s to the Titan will being able to overcome those challenges. Safe travels and good luck.

Tango probably a better source but I think in 08 and 09 Hurley/EM traveled to Indy for the team practice. 2017, 18, and 19 they chose not to waste a day practicing at LOS.    Tried to keep the week as normal as possible. EM did stay in hotel each of their 5 trips. Not sure there is a right way to do it. I’m sure all coaches have different philosophy’s on how to approach this week. What a nice advantage the teams around Indy have.

This game kinda feels similar to the West Lafayette Vs Evansville Memorial game we got a few years ago…which that was an instant classic where no team deserved to lose

Congrats Sir!  2017 probably helped ease the pain of losing in 2018. But all you can do is ask your kids to leave it all on the field and both teams did that night.
I think GS ability to run the ball and throw the ball will be the difference.  Usually teams can take away one or the other and have an advantage. Just not many weaknesses if any with GS offense. And unlike the past couple of years I think the GS defense is capable of controlling the game.

Hope the Tigers can get back to 3A soon. Nothing better than driving down Coal Mine road on a Friday night in late October.

The votes were taken at the conclusion of the regular season.  He had 440 yards in 2 postseason games.

His regular season was certainly good:  875 yds on 175 carries (5.0 ypc) with 14 TDs (plus 1 receiving TD).  But the vote came before his 332 yard 5 TD explosion against Boonville.

    And missed two games
