Meyer is still a great coach, don't get me wrong. USC + Meyer would be dangerous. With the talent California has, all it will take is a top 20 coach to put that team back in the playoffs.

I don't know if the move will pan out, but that's what a lot of my USC friends want.  Meyer is a great coach, I agree, but am curious about his health.

Well we didn't do so well with Rutgers and Maryland.  Time will tell I suppose.

Athletically, not so much, although UMD's basketball is pretty good.  Economically, it has been a windfall as the BTN is now in the DC and NYC TV markets.

Oh yeah, Rutgers plays some pretty good chickball...

No. Absolutely not. Kelly has put a better product on the field than Meyer (the last couple of years) has despite higher academic standards to get into the university. The only thing that separates Meyer from Kelly is the quality of recruits, due mainly as a result of Notre Dame's admission requirements for it's athletes. In fact, if Kelly jumped ship to Ohio State, I think people in Ohio would forget who Meyer was. People forget how great of a coach Kelly is. He's coaching at a University that most coaches run from. In order to win championships, you have to have access to the best recruits in the country. Notre Dame is at a disadvantage there. What Kelly has done is nothing less than remarkable. It would be fun to see what Kelly could do at an Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, USC, Texas, or Florida. But it won't happen. He's Notre Dame through and through. He's catholic. He's a long time fan of the University. And he upholds and respects Notre Dame's high standard for it's athletes, acedemics, and playing by the rules.

Urban Meyer's better days are behind him. He's in one of the hot bed recruiting states in the country and struggled to dominate like he should have. Failed to make the playoffs last year (Notre Dame was better despite Kirk Herbstreits biased opinion), and was humiliated by Clemson the last time they made the final four. But somehow no one ever brings up that embarrassing loss (way more embarrassing than ND's loss last year). Anyone who thinks otherwise regarding Meyer need look no further than the success Ryan Day is having this year. Ohio State is the best team in the country this year IMO because Day is the head coach and Meyer is not. I have nothing against Meyer (other than ruining Rod Smith's college career). He's just not the same coach he once was. If Notre Dame let go of Kelly for Meyer, I'd have a heart attack.

Urban will be coaching at USC ultimately.  I like BK--he has surprised me.

  4. A lot of options.  Add Notre Dame/no way ND will accept, Texas, Missouri, Carolina, Louisville, Georgia Tech (mind as well keep thing new), and many other ones.  I liked it being a Midwest-only league, but trends these days basically prohibit that.  We'll get somebody good.

When they play at ND, it’s always in October. When they play at USC, it’s in November. The whiny, wimpy Trojans would never come to the Midwest in November.

    No harm done.

My niece from Santa Clarita attends the University of Evansville, but that's a whole other climate altogether: Cfa down there as opposed to Dfa up north--there, you learned something today...

Thank you for the explanation, Bobref.  Great story!  After 20 years in the Navy I totally understand what honor is all about and can salute the grand dame for keeping the honor all these years.  Never knew that story  about Notre Dame.  Thanks for sharing.  The Navy is all about:  honor, courage, and commitment.  Notice that honor, is the very first thing.  But Navy STILL will never beat the Irish.  LOL

    Thank you for your service.

It’s not a “gentlemens’ agreement.” It’s a matter of honor. Believe it or not, at Notre Dame some things are even more important than national championships. Here’s the story:

In World War II, enrollment had declined to the point where the University was no longer financially viable. Notre Dame was on the brink of closing the doors for good. But the Navy came calling and rented dormitory space in which to house it’s V-12 trainees. The rent the Navy paid allowed Notre Dame to remain solvent, and when the war ended, and enrollment went back up, the University went on to become a world renowned institution — all made possible by the largesse of the Navy. Notre Dame considers that it owes an honor debt to Navy which can never be repaid. Their game each year is just an installment payment on that debt.  If you ever get a chance to go to a Notre Dame - Navy game, you’ll understand there is a special relationship there that goes far beyond a football game.

As I said, at Notre Dame, some things are more important than national championships. Honor is one of them. I hope it’s always that way. It’s just one of the things that makes it such a special place.

I never knew that.  Thanks for providing something informative and worthwhile.

I get what you're saying but think outside the box for a second.  With 16 teams they could divide the conference up into four 4 team divisions instead of two divisions with 8 teams.  That would give teams like an IU more of a chance to win a division banner and then make the conference championship.  They would probably have to go to a 14 game season with the last 2 games being the conference playoffs (all 4 division winners get in).   I've never made it a secret that I am a first and foremost a Buckeye fan.  I was born there and didn't leave until I was 23, so the Buckeyes are in my blood.  However, I have also become an IU fan since I retired here from the Navy in 1995.   I have now probably attended as many IU games as I have Ohio State games over the years.  As I mentioned earlier in a post, Michigan, Nebraska, and even Penn State need to get back in the National spotlight.  The B1G has been carried by Ohio State, Michigan State, and Wisconsin for the past several years and mostly by Ohio State as far as being in the playoffs.   I believe it would be beneficial for the conference to bring in more firepower.   I am also a B1G fan.  I want the conference to do well.

It’s beyond ludicrous to get a football lightweight (with the exception of Vanderbilt). And speaking of the SEC, they are very top heavy, therefore we should beat them at their own game.  Expansion should make the conference  better, not just give IU an easy win.

I personally would like to see

acc get Rutgers Maryland West Virginia South Carolina

    acc lose Louisville Georgia tech

    b10 lose Rutgers Maryland

    b10 get Notre Dame Louisville

    sec get Georgia tech

    sec lose South Carolina

    b12 get BYU Houston Memphis
    b12 lose West Virginia

All great ideas.  I don't see the Domers in the B1G, though.  I'd take Mizzou in a heartbeat who has no business in the SEC, just like WV in the Big 12, but I don't want those dummies...

QB depth is really thin right now actually with Sindelar hurt. Our actual backup is walk-on O'Connell and the 3rd stringer is either walk-on Carrollo or true freshman Piferi. Next year they'll be in better shape as far as bodies, but it will be interesting to see if Brohm gets a transfer QB as an emergency backup type.

I say the more, the merrier...

While true,  Purdue is just so dang young. By the time these young guys roll around, they will be a top B10 school. If they land Yanni Karlaftis too.....oh boy.

i just imagine in 2021 they have bell and Karlaftis as juniors....Moore as a senior. And I’m sure a number of other talents...but those 4 alone will give them a top 25 team. That’s just my opinion though.

Things do seem to be trending up!

Depending how the cards fall, Brady Allen out of GIbson Southern could land there. He loves the brohms from my understanding.  He is projecting to be a 4/5 star prospect too.

Allen would be class of 2022 and has openly stated what he is looking for.

    1) good academic school

    2) scheme that throws the ball a lot with lots of weapons

    3) a situation favorable to playing sooner than later.

Purdue certainly checks 2 of those boxes...situation is hard to judge this far out though.

Notre Dame is considered the favorite right now but they have two of the top QBs in the 2020 and 2021 class already.

Not gonna lie, ND is next-level, but Purdue shouldn’t be overlooked.

They are already way over on commitments from this class, so there is going to have to be a fair amount of attrition other than Sipe if they are to sign all of these guys to stay under the 85 scholarship limit. They only have 10 scholarship seniors and already have 19 commitments secured for 2020 and they are still actively recruiting. It will be interesting to see it shake out.

Good luck to Mr. Sipe on finishing his academics at Purdue.

It’s a bummer about Nick, I’m just glad he’ll still be enrolled at Purdue to receive a works-class education.  Academically, Purdue is a powerhouse, which is something we take for granted.  As for the QB position, yes we are loaded, but adding another never could hurt.

With GK3 and bell anything is possible.

both are doing absolutely outstanding as true freshman.  Killing it....truthfully I think GK3 is the best freshman in college football right now and i don’t think it’s particularly close. B10 OLs are no joke and TCUs Line is massive. Yet it doesn’t make much difference.

I'll be at the Illinois game on Saturday and am expecting a big Boiler win.

NBCSN Chicago posed the question this am....trade for Cam Newton?

As a Packers fan, I would LOVE to see this happen; right up there with the hire of John Fox. lol

you and me both, brother!  I get a special treat when I read the sports page every day and get more special insights...
