  1. Hypothetical: Joe Stud is offered a PWO at Big State U. He barely qualified with his GPA and his Test scores. You, as the high school coach, know that it is going to be a real struggle for him academically and athletically. How would you advise this young man with his future plans.
  2. Just read the superintendent is now against the Charter coming to South Bend school. Jeeze
  3. According to what we received at school, those students will be eligible to play for Washington. Just know there is going to be a big fight to even let the charter in. Also big money referendum coming up this May that will have much to do with South Bend Athletics...according to the superintendent
  4. So are there any good fits locally for these jobs.
  5. Yes . "Plan Z" . take priority. It would take some time to redistrict the high school boundaries, plus with school choice in the magnet programs, could be a long road.
  6. Same thing in South Bend with basketball ruling the roost. The interest for football is not as intense.
  7. 1. The South Bend City Government has nothing to do with the School System. 2. South Bend has always bucked trends or reinvents the wheel. 3. There is a vote today to allow a charter school to share a building with a high school. Don't really see that as progressive. oporation.
  8. They were until they and Walkerton merged to make John Glenn
  9. In 1969 South Bend had 8 high schools: Clay, Adams, Riley, Jackson, North Liberty, Washington, LaSalle, and the last year of Central. My how times have changed.
  10. The Clay head football job is now posted on the SBCSC website...does mean consolidation is on the back burner for now.
  11. To get a better perspective these are the enrollment numbers Adams 1892 Riley 1055 Clay 924 Washington 731
  12. The other big issue with consolidation is making sure it complies with Plan Z, an early 80's federal order to have racial balance in the South Bend Schools. Can you say the word gerrymandering
  13. According to reports in the South Bend Tribune, there is a charter school that is going to share space with Washington High School. Could this be the beginning of consolidation.
  14. Just as a point of reference, when the South Bend Schools decided to change their school day, it was thought about for months. It did not become official until less than two weeks before the beginning of school. This lead to many problems at the beginning of that school year. That is how South Bend Operates. So don't be surprised if the same timeline comes down for consolidation of schools...if at all
  15. South Bend residences just want the school cooperation to be fiscally responsible while maintaing current programs. It is an impossible task. Because school buildings can be purchased by charter schools for $1, there will be no new revenue from buildings being sold. I think they would want three school, they already have buildings for schools that size. I think there would be Adams (about 1900 students), LaSalle (Clay/Washington) (about 1600 students), and Riley (about 1400) There will be some junior high and elementary closing as well
  16. South Bend's first high school was Central...Riley became a high school in the early 30's, Washington in the late 30's, and Adams in the early 40's. I believe it is where the patron of the East Side wanted their school built. Interesting side note, the Adams building was ready to be sold to IUSB back in the 80's, however, the wealth alumni refused to let that happen,
  17. The local government has had nothing to do the school. That has been a long standing tradition. They will not close Riley because that is the newest building. Combining Clay and Washington will continue to give a presence on the North and West Sides
  18. I will be very suprised if they make any decision before the end of the school year. If they do, my proposal would be to close Clay and Washington and combine them at LaSalle. It has the capacity to hold that many students while still giving a presence on the West Side. They are trying to get a referendum on the ballot for more property tax increases. I doubt if that will pass.
  19. If it's all time...that means over 100 years of football for some programs If it is only during the current tournament format...please state that
  20. Since the IHSAA has included Unified Sports, number 2 will never happen. Do the partners that also participate not count as well. Many of them are athletes in other sports as well. For information purposes, the Unified Sports are Flag Football, Bowling, Track, and Bocce
  21. The first sanction I would hand down would be that the Roncalli football program organize and run Special Olympics Unified flag football, basketball, and Unified Track meets forever. They would also have to volunteer their time in the life skills classroom at Roncalli. The only way to learn is through experience. I teach life skills and was a football coach. If a player needed to see me, he would also have to see my students and interact with them. ESPN has a program to look for the most inclusive schools in the nations. Roncalli's job is to get one of those banners for inclusive schools
  22. I was teaching at Michigan City the year before and the first year they merged. Coaching was first based on years coaching in MC (union rules). Coaches were from both programs. The best thing they did was get rid of former school colors and nicknames. During the first football game, they had the red devil and raider leave Ames Field then the Wolf made his appearance. It was a great start. When Central and LaSalle were axed, the students had their choice where to go. It took a while for them to assimilate to the other schools. I wish Elkhart the best with their transition.
  23. Don't be shocks if he stays or finds another place on his own. He won't be fired
  24. According to an article in the South Bend Tribune, there is talk about reducing the amount of buildings used in the coroporation. SB schools have lost about 1200 in the last two year. There will be about a 17 million dollar cut in the budget. Most of the talk is contacting primary and intermediate centers. There is talk of eliminating one high school as well. I know many aren't familiar with the South Bend Schools, but it never hurts to have opinions from other people. Since I know the high schools best I will give my opinion on them The current student population at the high school this year (numbers are approximate) Clay . 925 Washington 925 Riley . 1025 Adams . 1825 My proposal is: Combine Clay and Washington at Lasalle. That building was a former high school build to hold 2000 students. Move the LaSalle intermediate center to Washington.
