  1. 2016 Semi State hosting Pioneer. Was nice pregame and then the severe thunderstorms hit. Temperature dropped drastically in the rain & wind. It was hard walking down the bleachers with frozen arms & legs. I was hoping LCC would have been the opponent in that weather but instead Kizer & the Panthers began their tear in 1A North.

Yeah, the favorite often seems to come from that Pioneer, Sheridan, LCC semi-state, and often times they've already beaten one of the other named teams on the way, and are battle tested to boot. At one point Seeger was really good and was in that group as well, although that's been a good 15 years. Pioneer kept losing before semi-state due to the combination of the Seeger, LCC, and Sheridan buzzsaw until the Kiser era.

Seeger gave us the worst feeling from a loss in 2003 as well. Up 21-0 @ half and lost 22-21 after settling for a FG that was missed. At the time, the best RB in school history (2 after him could say they are possibly) could have punched it in and sealed the deal for a state trip. Instead it was another semi state loss & that one was heartbreaking.

I was wondering when someone would put a poll out here.  I voted for all in with seeding, but I don't want the entire field seeded.  Seed the top two.  Draw the rest.  In my opinion this option provides the best of both worlds.  It makes the season meaningful, and it gives the poor teams a shot at a favorable draw in the first round.

I'm with you there. I'd like the top 4 in 8 team sectionals seeded & top 2 in 4 teams seeded & random draw the rest in all in. Almost chose the last option as I lean more on schools focusing just on education and using the European model of clubs for sports. With college NIL and programs like IMG, it seems like it's heading that way. Already have club volleyball & baseball to name a few.

I think it is good to spread out the large and small schools evenly with the crowds.  Helps with parking and everything else.

Though it does not always work out.   We were down there is 2016 and it was a mess with Center Grove and Roncalli on the same side

After experiencing LOS & security last year, it doesn't matter. They had us 1A fans trying to get out the same way the 3A fans were entering. They blocked off the other exits and stood guard so you couldn't go that way. Just massive log jam to get in & out. Also should have tickets designated by school to allow earlier access for the teams competing and then others for the casual fans. We had people from Tri & some other schools fighting in line while AC & Lutheran fans graciously waited to get in. Tri fans didn't do anything wrong but the meat heads from 4-6A fan bases tried causing issues.

Think 1-3A would allow those rare instances where the rural areas get all 3 teams to state in the same year (Wells or Adams County enrollment in a couple years).

  5. Eh, good for those just following Indiana HS football. I like having Indiana on Friday and Ohio on Saturday if it works out that way. Don't forget college football on Saturdays as well for fans as well as officials. Sorta wish the IHSAA would make the 1-3A finals permanently on Friday instead of flopping back & forth or the notion of waiting to see where the participating schools are from.

  6. At the end of the day, an all in tournament that is either partially or fully seeded with neutral sites for regional and semi state games is the answer. You only need 24 locations for regional and 12 (which could be half of the same regional locations) for semi state games. Partially seeding also allows for the random draw the IHSAA loves so much. All in leaves zero argument as everyone had their chance to get the job done.

No disrespect to this gentleman, or to chain crew members everywhere. But when I was working, when we met with the chain crew pregame and heard, “yeah, we’ve been doing this a long time,” I cringed. Often, those guys were the hardest to work with, since they had their own way of doing things.

Sounds like they knew the way things should be and kept officials in line 🤣 is what you are saying.

That's a good suggestion - I wish I'd thought of it.  We used to live about 1/4 mile away from that stadium when we first got married.  That makes me feel even dumber for not considering HN lol!

Do they have turf now?  I thought I read they do.

Believe so as they did a major renovation. Don't feel bad as I stupidly confused Snider & Carroll in a Snider thread vs Mishawaka. Oof!

    That's a fair question.

I won't even pretend to know the logistics of it, but down here they make it work.  I would think there would be at least a base level of pre-planning required, since all playoff games are neutral sites, and venues aren't decided until that night's games are over.  Obviously adults with kids playing wouldn't be expected to stay home and work concessions, or something like that.  You would have to have some level of commitment from other staff/faculty/volunteers.  I don't even know if those people are paid.  The host school does get a percent of the gate, but it's probably not very high after the UIL (IHSAA for ya'll) takes their cut.  Probably the longer you do it, you come up with a system.  Pros & cons to everything.

Believe Ohio has schools or venues bid or make a determination if they want to host playoff games if they meet the OHSAA requirements. This year for they start neutral sites this week in round 3 up until semi state at those sites. They sometimes have to swap games from one site to another. That usually comes from 2 or 4 of the schools asking the OHSAA. 2 schools on the east side of Wood County just did this for their game. Eastwood vs Elmwood was moved from Napoleon to Bowling Green. Bowling Green should have been the obvious choice but the OHSAA like the IHSAA can just be ignorant at times.

Geography. Indiana is tall, not wide. A Hammond to Evansville regional game would be a bear travel-wise.

Yeah I was meaning using neutral sites though. I should have clarified. No reason they can't rotate the semi state pairing each year between the 4 different regional winners. Year 1 could be NW vs NE & SW vs SE; Year 2 NW vs SE, NE vs SW; Year 3 NW vs SW, NE vs SE. Should be neutral sites for regional & semi state.

There's always Heritage.  Turf, 3A sized stands.  But the travel advantage flips to Luers in that scenario.

Someone's gonna get screwed a little bit re. travel time with neutral sites.  Deal with it.  Make it worth that extra time and win! (As told to a group of parents - and later the players - by my sons HC several years ago.  We won.)

Should do Huntington North for Luers vs Bluffton as a neutral site.
