  1. Guys I’m not getting into this/that. HH won and proved they were the better team by beating us twice. The purpose of this thread was to ask genuinely about field playing conditions and people’s opinions about playing Championship type games in less than ideal field conditions. And yes- the field last night was less than ideal- was disappointed in the condition of Patriot field but it is what it is. I just personally don’t feel like like a Championship game should be played on a field that has less than ideal footing. That is all. Best of luck to the Patriots moving forward. Got a good team there in Spencer County.

Come on man!  I've seen you reference "adverse field conditions" and moving to a different site a couple of times this week.  I know you guys have that nice, clean turf and everything but is a little mud no longer allowed for hs football?

Just of my opinion that a CHAMPIONSHIP game shouldn't be played where footing/turf are questionable when adequate resources are available elsewhere...and no that doesn't just include at SR.  It's just too bad. Yes we play an outdoor game so elements are part of it. I just personally don't like what I watched at Luers last year...it doesn't seem right to me. Most around the State have went the field turf route or at least sought out suitable replacements for playing and don't have to worry about it - some still do. To each their own.

I don't know but I'd be more inclined to let the other sports move to one team hosting than change football to neutral.  I just think homefield is way overblown as an advantage at the high school level.  It's not like we're playing in venues that allow for 4800 fans from one team and only 200 from the other.  Both teams get as many fans in as will come buy tickets to watch them.  There is a small advantage for travel and familiarity but I'd say it's very rare that this "advantage" determines much at the high school level.

To me the argument for neutral site games is more for the field conditions themselves. Some schools just shouldn't be hosting those games with so much on the line, plain and simple. The last thing anyone wants (or should want) is for the field/playing conditions/surface to be a factor in the game.

Is this a quiet request to move Friday's game from the Jungle in Lincoln City to the turf of Raider field if there is inclement weather???  Or are my eyes deceiving me here????

I’m not saying that’s a bad idea- but no that wasn’t the purpose of this thread. I was genuinely curious as to how the process worked. And I’m still not entirely sure how it does from reading all these responses.

I have let my feelings known -I think it’s a shame the deeper in the tournament to see a game played on adverse conditions (thinking Luers last year) when plenty of turf fields are available. Just my opinion

    Pioneer just last year

So then what are the mechanics of this move taking place?? Do both schools have to agree or is it just the “host” team saying- “our field is crappy- let’s move it to ______” ?? What if the visiting team doesn’t want the game moved??

As we move through the playoffs, fans (and coaches) are likely to see an increased emphasis by officials on sideline control. There are 2 reasons for this:

    1. The deeper we get into the playoffs, the better the officiating crews. And one of the hallmarks of the better crews is that they pay attention to details.
    2. Big Brother is watching, and by that, I mean the IHSAA. Sideline management and control is a HUGE point of emphasis with them. As an observer, I have strict instructions to downgrade crews who don’t keep their sidelines clean.

So, perhaps a review of the applicable rules is in order. Let’s start with some definitions.

The Team Box is an area that runs from 25 yd. line to 25 yd. line, and is a minimum of 2 yds. from the sideline. It extends as far back as there is room. All nonplayers, i.e., team members not in the game, trainers, statisticians, coaches, auxiliary game personnel, and any others affiliated with the team are supposed to stay in there.

The Coaches’ Area is a belt that runs from 25 yd. line to 25 yd. line, and begins at the sideline and extends at least 2 yds., to the front edge of the team box. A maximum of 3 coaches are allowed in the Coaches’ Area when the ball is dead. No one else is allowed in the Coaches Area (except for officials). No ball boys, chain crew members, stats keepers, etc. They all have to be at least 2 yds off the sideline at all times.

The Restricted Area is the same as the Coaches’ Area, except that the ball is alive. Absolutely no one except officials are allowed in the Restricted Area. No coaches, ball boys, chain crew members, anyone. Absolutely verboten. There is supposed to be a broken white line all the way around the field 2 yds. from the sideline (outside the team boxes), a continuation of the Restricted Area, which is off limits to everyone except the officials.

Now that we’ve got terms defined, here are the rules that are implicated:

    1. A nonplayer shall not be outside his team box unless to become a player or to return as a replaced player. So, if a player in uniform ventures outside the team box, or a coach, or anyone else affiliated with the team, the sideline warning procedure is invoked. On the first violation, there will be a flag, but there is no distance penalty. The second violation earns a 5 yd. penalty. Third and subsequent violations are a 15 yd. penalty.

    2. No one can be in the restricted area when the ball is alive, except the officials. Violation starts the sideline warning procedure described above.

    3. if anyone is in the restricted area while the ball is alive, and makes unintentional contact with an official, that is a 15 yd. illegal personal contact foul. If it happens a second time, it’s another 15 yds. and disqualification of the head coach.

    4. Finally, no nonplayer, Coach, attendant, etc., is allowed on the field except during a charged or officials timeout, or the intermission between periods or after a score. Violation is a 15 yd. penalty.

What about the very common practice of a coach coming a few steps onto the field to give the next play to his QB? By rule, it’s a foul. Now, most crews will let this go if it’s very brief, only a couple of steps, and the coach promptly retreats to the Coaches’ Area. But it’s important to realize the coach does this at the sufferance of the officials. It’s not an entitlement. And it shouldn’t be abused. 1 coach, a few steps, in order to communicate with a player, and very brief.

Those are the sideline management and control rules. Unfortunately, they are too often honored only in the breach. This leads to a fair degree of inconsistency from crew to crew, which then leads to hard feelings from coaches when someone actually enforces the rules correctly. But that is likely to change as we advance further toward Thanksgiving weekend.

    Thanks for the info Bob.

I think what most coaches need to realize is just cause it was tolerated by one crew one week- doesn’t mean it’s that way the next Friday. Like with many things in life- different crews have different personalities and it’s just the way it is.

What really has bothered me is when different side-judges on the SAME CREW have a different interpretation of the rules! A couple times this year I’ve had a side judge be pretty strict with his sideline- no problem- that is his right. But then I look over and see the opposing coach darn near to the numbers on multiple occasions- and when I point it out that I just want a fair shake of the rules it’s just a “I’ll tell him” response- but ya know how that goes.

  7. Getting deeper into the tournament - and as the weather starts to turn- curious as to if anyone has ever “given up” their home-field advantage to play on a better surface??  I seem to remember Monrovia-Ritter Semi-State was moved a couple times to Plainfield because of the playing surface?? I also remember watching Luers slop of a field last year and remember thinking to myself “such a same a high quality game like this is limited by the conditions of the field” ...Sorry if this is an obvious topic- I just don’t recall very many examples of it happening.

  8. For the first time since we’ve started up our series together- I believe Linton actually has a legit and real shot to take home this sectional crown. Very impressed with their team. In my opinion- they’ll have to clear that “mental hurdle” of actually beating MD ...and that can be a challenge in-and-of itself. Just reading some of the Linton material on this thread- the Linton faithful make it sound like it’d be some sort of HUGE upset were they to win...and I’m not so sure. Linton has all the tools to get it done. The question is can they?? I think it will come down to a break here or a break there...

On the other side- give me the Rangers winning a defensive battle 14-8.

Looking at the offensive stats from last game, I have to ask:  Can the Patriots pass the ball?  I see they only threw 2 passes in that game and both were incomplete.  I get that some teams run the ball almost exclusively, but at some point if that isn't working, are you capable of passing?  I think the score will be closer than during the season.  According to the Sags they are about 10 points apart.  Give GS the 1.45 points for being at home and it comes down to about an 8 to 9 point game.  Of course, that's all things being equal.  Looks like there will be some issues with the weather Friday night.  Even if it isn't raining/snowing during the game, the field will probably be wet from the previous 2 days of forecasted rain.  Seen games like that where there were zero turnovers.  Also seen games like that when there were 11 turnovers.  Should be a really good game.  I'll say the Patriots win out and move on.

Not likely at Jack Jewell stadium ...

Don't get your panties in a bunch.  SR is a totally different monster Week 11 as compared to Week 1.  All things being equal, if SR and MD are close in ability, then MD is probably much improved in Week 11....making Week 11 MD better than Week 1 SR.  Hence the "toughest test" comment you refer to.  It's science...

There's not a Miner fan out there who doesn't hope that SR is equal to or better than MD.

I was the one who made the comment and that is pretty much why I made it.  SR always gets stronger as the season progresses, so their week one performance against how Mater Dei is playing NOW is slightly different.  You only have to look a couple of seasons ago.  SR beat Linton 17 - 16 in the season opener and then beat them 20 - 0 in the sectional.  Obviously they are a different team in week one vs week 11.  I also took into consideration that Mater Dei beat the 6th ranked team in 4A on the road just a few short weeks ago.  It's tough to trump that kind of win.  So it was NOT a slap in the face towards SR.  Geez, what are you?   A Democrat???

Hurling insults doesn't seem necessary. I was just making an observation to a comment. I wouldn't/shouldn't have said anything, the "NO DOUBT" part of the comment made me raise an eyebrow. It seems pretty obvious to me a team will be better in week 11 than week 1, you don't need to point that out)

Sorry to interrupt the thread. I think it will be a good ball game.

Curiously “odd” to see posters purporting to support both Southridge & South Spencer jawing on this thread about a game btwn Linton & MD.  Certainly, everyone is welcome to an opinion on this forum but representing them as from one of the involved teams seem a bit disingenuous.  Pot stirring perhaps?

Was just referencing a comment earlier that MD will "no doubt be the toughest test" the Miners have faced all year. I wasn't mis-representing anything. Thought it was a slap-in-the-face to my beloved Raiders ...that is all. Back in my hole I'll climb.

Mater Dei big, unfortunately.  Will be impressed if Linton can make it a game.  Hope my prediction is wrong.

Very well could be. Linton has all the pieces in place this year to give MD a run-for-their money. But what do I know, we're no where near MD's ability according to some on this thread.

Good luck to both, should be a whale of a ball game.

Week one has come and gone. Don't think there were really any surprises in round one unless you picked Tell City and that was kind of a toss up game.  The final score sort of reflected that even though it was a shutout for Forrest Park (9 - 0 )  The other 3 games showed the winners all scoring 50+ points.  Given who the four remaining teams are, these games look about as evenly matched as you could have asked for in terms of records and ratings/polls.

Forest Park @ North Knox:   Haven't seen a prediction on this game yet but looking at the Sags you would think the Warriors will be the favorite.  FP has a slightly better SOS but NK is at home.  The Warriors did give up 21 points to SS but maybe they had a big lead and some of that was  during JV time.  I like the Warriors in a close contest.

Linton @ Mater Dei:  This is the one a lot of people wanted to see for the final but the draw doesn't know that.  Both teams are coming off round one blowout wins.  Both programs are no strangers to big games and Thanksgiving weekend dates.  No doubt that Mater Dei has the better SOS.  Linton has beefed up their schedule to help with games such as this, but will it be enough?  There is no doubt that MD will be the best team that Linton will have faced all year..   According to this week's sags, MD will be the favorite coming in.  Something like around 7 points.  The Miners are 0 fer against the likes of Ritter, Scecina, and LCC.  Will Mater Dei join that list?  My heart says Miners but my head says Mater Dei wins and moves on and will represent the 2A South.

The more I look at the Success Factor, the less I like it.  I don't like the bouncing back and forth between classes that the Success Factor promotes.

Public schools all play by the same rules.  They are all restricted by boundaries, or all participate with equal rules in open enrollment districts, where families can make choices.  Public schools should never leave their class until they grow out of it.  That is the way class sports were designed and intended to operate.

PPs know they have inherent built in advantages, and they enjoy the challenge of playing up in class.  I doubt they enjoy bouncing up and down from class to class as they do in the current model.

Let's abolish the Success Factor.  Give Bobby Cox his kudos for doing all he can to address competitive balance.  And go back to the Pure Multiplier 1.65, which was designed to balance out the roster advantages PPs hold over their public counterparts.

Holy smokes- did I just agree with what DT wrote?? Well, guess there is a first for everything! Spot on in this post...good work.

Not if every team is playing at the same time thanks to the all-in format.

That’s the problem with trying to gain any traction with the seeding discussion- you “qualification” nuts (ie Bobref) always try and make it about that.

Lets start with making what we have better- and that’s seeding the sectionals. And it’s really pretty simple

  16. 2 minutes ago, slice60 said:

IHSAA will always do Blind Draw.  In every sport.

And every team will always be included in the postseason tournament. In every sport.

If they seeded or decreased the tournament field based on whatever criteria, the exact same people would be bitching about the seeds anyway.

    END OF DISCUSSION.

Funny as a wrestling coach we figure out how to SEED a SECTIONAL and I’m pretty sure that is IHSAA sanctioned.

The fact the IHSAA won’t seed football sectionals is pure LAZINESS. A criteria could be set, just as it is in wrestling, and it would get accomplished and guess what?? It would be a helluva lot better than we have now. Would at least give SOME meaning to a good regular season.

Spread Power O that has a lot of the same option concepts that the QB can dial up. To go up 21-17 with 50 seconds to go Qb asked to go under center with a fullback behind him and ran option from the 4 yard line to score. Some things remain the same it seems.

Say it ain't so....say it ain't so. Even the "old guard" is turning to the new age.

I think we overestimated the quality of football in the PAC, yet again. North Posey, South Spencer, and (for a bit) Forest Park presented real challenges to Heritage Hills and Southridge and then eventually Gibson Southern. The Titans had a good squad in 2002 that got banged up. A regional or semistate loss by the Sectional 32 winner is not beyond possibility, due in part to the weakness of the PAC.

Ya cause the PAC had a State Champ and a Semi-State appearance in the last 2 years- we suck. Tf outta here with that noise.

I’m sure he appreciates your concern. For what it’s worth- it’s his non-throwing shoulder so you don’t have to be too worried about his baseball future as you seem to be. Awfully nice of you tho.
