The ultimate ruling was that there was an illegal forward pass and, after that, there was a fumble recovered by a prone player, so the play was over at that point. Rendered everything sort of moot. No TD. BSU wins.

A question that has occurred to me a few times this season: has the importance of getting 5 star recruits right out of high school diminished due to the ease with which student athletes can transfer - especially grad students - and the ability to regularly supplement your roster that way?

Going to have to take exception to this, at least under NF rules. For this to be illegal participation, the people crossing the sideline would have to touch the ball, hinder an opponent, or “otherwise participate.” I didn’t see this. It fits much more closely with 9-8-1,“Being on the field except as a substitute or replaced player.” That makes it unsportsmanlike conduct. It makes a big difference because if the foul on BSU is unsportsmanlike, the live ball foul for illegal forward pass against WMU is enforced and, because its penalty includes loss of down, the period is not extended, the score is canceled, and the game is over. On the other hand, if you call it illegal participation, it combines with the WMU foul to create a double foul. By rule, a double foul during a down in which time expires requires that the period be extended by an untimed down. 3-3-3b. The down would be replayed at the previous spot.

If the Hoosiers can “get it turned around,” anyone can. Question is, what does it mean to “get it turned around?” Does it mean getting to the championship game? Does it mean having a winning record in conference? You can’t draw a road map without having a destination in mind. it would take a massive influx of resources to get UI to the point where it was challenging for B1G supremacy. But it would take comparatively little to make them respectable. I really believe it starts with the coach. There are Tom Allens out there. The trick is finding them. If I was the President at UI, and was asked by my Trustees and boosters to get the football program respectable, I’d call up my AD and tell him when he hires a new football coach it better be someone good, or he’s next.

That’s a template for how to do it. So, your issue isn’t that the coaches aren’t trained in proper technique (and supervised to make sure they employ it in practice). It’s that kids don’t like to block the right way. ‘Twas ever thus.

I doubt he’s too worried about that. Nor should he be. Too bad the good of the country doesn’t “trump” vindictiveness.

Let me make clear once again that I voted for neither Trump nor Biden last month. I’m not a Republican or Democrat. But I am an American, which qualifies me to have an opinion on this subject. I think the time has come for Mr. Trump to recognize that his chances of getting the relief he wants are so infinitesimal that the harm being done by attempting to undermine the election results doesn’t justify further efforts. Time to think of the country first. Pack it in. Issue a bunch of pardons. Suck it up and be the bigger man. Then take a long vacation after Jan. 20.

Man, I saw some outstanding officiating yesterday. I was camped in front of the TV most of the day, switching around. We hear about it all the time when somebody throws a phantom OPI flag that "costs Purdue the game." Let's hear it for some outstanding plays: In the Tennessee - Vanderbilt game, Sarah Fowler became the first woman in history to score a point in a Power 5 game when she kicked an extra point. The deep wing official on the Vanderbilt sideline had the presence of mind to retrieve that ball, and work his way through the crowd that was congratulating her on the sideline and give her that football. You know that's something the crew talked about beforehand. That's just a great piece of officiating. In the Florida - LSU game, on Florida's final drive that ended in the missed field goal, the attempt was set up by a 30+ yd. pass play in which Trask threw a bullet to a crossing receiver and, somehow, the Umpire avoided getting hit by that ball. You could see he was anticipating it, and at the last second he turned like a matador as the pass went by like a speeding bullet. Missed him by inches. Great game awareness. Of course, the best bit of officiating goes to the crew in the Ball State - Western Michigan game. If you didn't see the craziness that ensued at the end of that ballgame, you're missing something. Watch the crew on the play. Totally disciplined, staying in their assigned areas, flowing as necessary. Then the calm and very clear way the Referee explained why the game was over. Great work in a real pressure situation, as the winner of that game advances to the MAC championship game. Chime in with some outstanding officiating that you've seen recently.

Is this too off-topic for this thread? I enjoy interesting nicknames for stadiums. I saw some great games at The Boneyard when Russ’ wishbone was crushing the opposition. Ditto for The Inferno at Lowell, in Kirk Kennedy’s heyday. Always got a kick out of the Plymouth Rockpile, with one of the best student sections anywhere. What are some other nicknames, official or unofficial?

If you agree that part of good parenting is teaching your kids good decision-making skills, then you need to involve them in decision-making long before then. They don’t just wake up on the morning of their 18th birthday, having been dusted overnight by the “good decision-making fairy.”

If there is, I can’t find it on You Tube, but it was surreal. Two IU students jumped out of the end zone bleachers and tried to take the sledge away from him. A tussle ensued and one of them conked him in the head with it and he was out! Just then, Otis Armstrong ran in a screen from about 65 yds. out. They held up the extra point until a couple of guys each grabbed a leg and they dragged Pete out of the end zone so they could play the try. As the Purdue band came off the field at halftime and the IU band was going on, something happened, and the two bands went at it. It was one of the strangest sights I ever saw on a football field.
