  1. You’re thinking of 3-4-6. The other parts of the God Rule are 9-9-1, which empowers the Referee to enforce any penalty he deems equitable when a team commits an unfair act for which there is no specific rule coverage, and 1-1-6 which gives the Referee the authority to rule on any situation not specifically covered by the rules, and provides his decisions are “final.”
  2. When I was refereeing we used to refer to this as part of the “God Rule,” which pretty much gives the guy with the white hat the power to do everything and anything on game night.
  3. Could not agree more. We’ve had a female official in the Super Bowl! I’m going to suggest that local association football chairs get with their chairs for women’s sports, and try to cross-sell football to women who already officiate other sports. I think that would yield the quickest results.
  4. IMO, not a foul, unless there’s some accompanying verbiage that’s unsportsmanlike.
  5. Yes. Two USC fouls is mandatory disqualification. IHSAA rule is that disqualification means you’re not eligible to play next week.
  6. I’m looking at the Week 1 observers’ schedule and I don’t see that game on the list. There are multiple potential explanations. I’d only be speculating. But if there was an observer there, I could find out from him.
  7. So, the same kid was penalized twice for unsportsmanlike conduct? I assume he was disqualified after the second one, and consequently will be riding the pines next Friday.
  8. I’ll be at Warsaw next week when they host Chesterton, who took a highly regarded Hobart team to the woodshed last night. Should be very interesting.
  9. I saw the film and both of those penalties were absolutely spot on. Only because I retired from on field officiating. 🤣
  10. Nice job. You managed to destroy your credibility after only 13 posts. Might be a record.
  11. Both flags absolutely justified. In the first, spiking the ball after a TD has been a foul for many, many years. Automatic. In the second clip, the gesture wasn’t much. But it was made in close proximity to an opponent, and right after there was some after the whistle jostling and jawing. Context is important. By the way, there is an Officiating sub-forum in the High School forum, and there is a specific thread started for Week One officiating issues. This would be better off there.
  12. Is this the answer to the shortage, an untapped resource? From a Facebook post: 🏈 This is significant! On August 26, Mississippi high school football history will be made. SuperTalk Mississippi News reports the state’s first-ever all-female referee crew will officiate a game between (Jackson) Murrah High and Cleveland Central. “This opportunity is absolutely monumental as it is a positive step in the right direction. Women have always wanted a seat at the table. I’ve been told, early in my career as a baseball umpire and football referee, ‘They’re not ready to see a woman in these sports!’ Why limit us?” Referee Adrienne Barnes asked adding, “Men officiate women’s sports, so why can’t women officiate men’s sports? If we have to take the bruises to open doors for more women, this is the crew to do it.” Rounding out the crew with Barnes, who will serve as referee, are the following: Sarah Fleming – Umpire Sherri Vaughans – Head Line Judge Fran Adams – Line Judge Felicia Davis – Side Judge Alona Alexander – Field Judge Dominique Sutton – Back Judge Phylicia Cotten – 40s Clock Constance Clark – Electronic Clock Operator Tamika Lipsey – Chain Crew Timika Morris – Chain Crew Charmaine Smith – Chain Crew
  13. As I said, my observation was strictly limited to the teams I have personally seen, which probably number a dozen or so, not counting at the state finals. It wasn’t intended to be universal. More anecdotal. For what it’s worth.
  14. What great matchups those middle divisions made in those days. Hearns, Hagler, Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran. Awesome fights.
  15. I’ve seen a number of Indy area teams in the past few seasons, as well as those from other areas of the state. I’m not ready to say the coaching is “better,” because there are so many things that go into that. I don’t see how the players develop. I’m not in their weight rooms or at their summer programs. In-game situations are hard to evaluate because they are so random. What I do see, however, is that teams from Indy and the collar counties have a different “look” about them. Their pregame warmup is crisp and organized. Their sidelines are managed very efficiently during games. They don’t commit stupid or careless penalties. They don’t line up in the wrong place. They play great situational football. They just seem better organized and disciplined. Their play reflects that. Whether that falls under the heading of “better coaching,” than so be it.
  16. Post officiating-related issues here. Questions. Observations. Even Complaints, provided they are made in a sportsmanlike manner and contain enough factual detail to allow comment. Otherwise, they will be hooted down. I’m particularly interested to hear observations about implementation of the new intentional grounding rule.
  17. I find it interesting that this was done via settlement, and not a ruling on the appeal. But the really interesting question is whether the Browns stand pat at QB, or go after Jimmy G. as an 11 game rental.
  18. Munster @ Lake Central. Observing and evaluating the officiating crew.
  19. Back to football. I’ll be at the Burial Ground Friday evening, and will report my observations about the 2022 edition of the Indians. Understand things got a little interesting during their scrimmage with Andrean last week, and LC had to say a few Hail Marys and Our Fathers to the IHSAA. Anyone know what happened?
  20. Even in the world of big time pro sports, that whack job was an outlier. I wouldn’t consider him representative.
  21. Even if that were true - it demonstrably isn’t - that’s like saying “Aside from that, Mrs.Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?”
